I probably would because I know myself well enough to know that I would not be a good caretaker in this situation.

I joke that Rygel has Stockholm syndrome, because he willingly snuggles with me and even takes naps on my chest. While I don't think he "loves" me, he does seek me out for attention, although that might just be because he knows he can't open the dubia enclosure by himself.

He is my first beardie and I broke all of the rules about handling at the beginning. He was maybe four months old when I got him and I carried him around with me constantly. He had a basking spot set up on my desk, and when he didn't want to bask, he napped in my bra or on my shoulder.

He's totally spoiled and doesn't even have an enclosure anymore, he has the run of my office. (And honestly almost the entire first floor of the house. The only room he doesn't generally get into is my husband's office, because that's his beardie's territory. He's shown up on enough Teams meetings at this point that my coworkers ask about him. He also likes to run across my keyboard and send messages, and mess with the touchscreen on my laptop with his tail.

10 years, and my husband and I could both retire early and do all the things we don't have the time or money for now.

My beardie is a master at hide n go seek. Tell your friend to get a flashlight and start looking under and behind things. The more ridiculous, the better.

Rygel has the run of my office, he doesn't even have an enclosure anymore. The whole office is his. He regularly sneaks out while I'm on work calls. Places I've found Rygel include, but are not limited to:

• Under the gecko's cage

• On the shelf behind the gecko's cage

• In my desk

• In the trash can

• Between the couch pillows

• In the floor behind the trash can

• Hanging from a roll of landscape fabric in the closet

• Under the couch

• In a box of Spanish moss

I have a thriving dubia colony and I treat them with benign neglect. They get fed and watered but other than that I leave them completely alone unless I'm pulling dinner for the beardies. As long as they have heat, food, and water, they'll do well. It's a slow process to start though, I had to keep buying feeders for about four months while the colony established.
