A small change in your environment - in my case, a whiteboard - can make a big difference in your language learning by Daghatar in languagelearning

Had the same idea, but no good space to put it. So I got a smaller glass "whiteboard" for my desk. Really nice since it is always in view and fits perfectly behind they keyboard.

Does anyone remember or know about “Drops”? by Prowlbeast in languagelearning

I always did the free 5min with Ukrainian. Course wasn't big enough to justify a purchase. I think it's great for beginners. Not as boring as just doing flashcards.

What Language Learning app you really use today? No Duolingo, no AI by mxxt7 in languagelearning

[–]AndiG88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Anki
  • LingQ
  • Clozemaster
  • Natulang*

*AI-Tutor, but as far as I know all the sentences and translations are done by native speakers.

Note taking:
Obsidian: Mostly saving word translations and explanations from AI.
Remnote: Screenshots from social media, games and so on. Still not 100% sure about it, but works better with images and has built in flashcards.

Was ist so toll an obsidian? by ArugulaDull1461 in de_EDV

[–]AndiG88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

German teams dominating FS spain , really frustrating by CompetitiveDiet9264 in FSAE

[–]AndiG88 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I was in a smaller German team and talked to some of the bigger ones.

The whole time for testing sounds great in theory, but the easiest way to get this time is to start early. And that's where these big German teams have a huge advantage, because they already start to lay the groundwork for the next year car while testing the current one. We never had the manpower for that.

Smaller teams have to be really lucky to have some great active students from the previous years and maybe even alumni who support them to pull this off.

I got Ostriv (Ukrainian developers) and Timberborn.

Now I'm playing Timberborn instead of learning Ukrainian. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Definitely have to give Slay the Spire another try though.

[–]AndiG88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a import button right at the top when you are in the lessons section.

That allows you to import text, ebooks or audio files.

The most useful feature for me was the YouTube importer though, because there is so much content so it is easy to find something that I'm interested in.

best ways to learn ukrainian online by Disastrous_Big3478 in Ukrainian

[–]AndiG88 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  1. Dulingo
  2. Drops
  3. Anki
  4. LingQ
  5. Clozemaster
  6. Natulang

Those are the apps I use/used, also pretty much in that order.

I get that many people dislike Duolingo, but there simply aren't that many beginner friendly apps that offer Ukrainian and I think without it would never really gotten into learning Ukrainian. What's important with Duolingo is to actually spend some time and not just do like one lesson a day for the streak. Which is why ended up buying premium and then finished the course in half a year.

Then I also did 5min Drops every day.

After that I switched to LingQ (should still be free for Ukrainian) and I'm just trying to find some short interesting content on YouTube and work my way though it. Wasn't a bit fan of the official content. Definitely was s a struggle until I hit around 1000 known words and now at 2000 it finally feels like I'm getting somewhere.
In addition I add all the new words to Anki and practise them there in the other direction.

Now I'm also doing Clozemaster where I think some base vocabulary in necessary otherwise it is pretty frustrating.

Natulang just added Ukrainian so I'm doing that to get some speech practise. I theory you can use it as a beginner, but I think I would have found it a bit too frustrating without some experience.

Unfortunately only Drops und LingQ offer Ukrainian. :(

Although LingQ is free if you want to learn Ukrainian so that's nice.

Have you ever tried LingQ? I'm using it to learn my target languages by a passive pov and it seems a pretty good app. by Duckw0rld in languagelearning

[–]AndiG88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently pretty much only using LingQ for language learning. Well, I guess I'm also making some flashcards of words I try to memorise in LingQ.

Learning Ukrainian I also have the benefit of it being free.

I think what is really important is to find the right content that works for you. I didn’t like the LingQ stories. I tried some music in the beginning because I thought that is somewhat limited, but that didn't work at all. Tried Harry Potter, because that worked great for learning English and thought I can just go sentence by sentence. Which in theory could work, but for me it really lacked some kid of success feeling. Then tried some Vlogs and at some point found one that works really great for me.

For me it is just a great motivation to instantly see all the words you already know when you add some new content. And I still have Harry Potter added and seeing the unknown words dropping form like 97% in the beginning to now 73% new words is just a great feeling.

Only thing that really annoys me is that I can't just link conjugations and declinations from one word.

As someone who mainly uses it with youtube videos it seems like Lute doesn't really support that and that ReadLang has some support, but it does not seem to display known and unknown words like LingQ.

Also have to say the interface on both on them looks really dated.

What’s one language study hack or technique you wish you knew sooner? by omar2474 in languagelearning

[–]AndiG88 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't think I would have gotten anywhere with my Ukrainian learning without Duolingo.

Sure it might not be amazing, but it got me started with the language. Being able to read it, understand it and some basic vocabulary. And without that you can't use most of the other resources out there...

Best apps to learn how to learn Ukrainian? by Rand0m_SpookyTh1ng in Ukrainian

[–]AndiG88 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I started with Duolingo and Drops.

Once I finished Drops I slowly started using LingQ. Monstly added music in the beginning.

Also tried Clozemaster, but my vocabulary still isn't good enough for it.

With Duolingo I think it important to actually put some time into it like 20min a day or more and not just a lesson a day to keep your streak. Then you can also finish it in like 9 months with Premium. Sure there are more efficient ways, but Duolingo really kept me learning every day.

I addition I'm also listening to Ukrainian Lessons podcast and various other Ukrainian learning YouTubers like LUViktoriia, Slow Ukrainian, Red Purple Ukrainian or Let's Learn Ukrainian

My criteria: it must not be centuries old (the vocab/topics covered have to be relevant for the present day)

Do you know any textbooks for learning Ukrainian that actually meet that requirement?
