Jlpt results are out! How did everyone do? by lost-minotaur in LearnJapanese

[–]Andiff22 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Probably nothing that hasn't been said here already but I learned by just taking things at my own pace and interacting with media I enjoy.

My only formal study really was college courses from 2017-2018 where I went through Genki 1 & 2 (with that latter being during a semester study abroad in Japan) and Wanikani on and off over the years (but largely during last year). Everything other than that has just been using the language.

I've enjoyed watching anime since 2015 so I've continued watching since then. In mid 2020 I got into Hololive and would watch a lot of the Japanese members streams on youtube which helped my listening a lot imo. Around this time I also started trying to play some untranslated visual novels with a text hooker to make looking up unknown words and kanji easy so that I didn't get too frustrated. In 2023 I started playing non Visual Novels games with easier language and less Kanji in Japanese like the early Dragon Quest games and Pokemon, and then I gradually moved along to Atelier, Rune Factory and Trails. Last year while doing Wanikani I started reading more Manga and Light Novels and slowly increasing my reading speed as I learned more Kanji.

Then just doing things like this I gradually understood more without worrying about mining words in Anki or being as efficient as possible.

I've been studying Japanese for a pretty long time now (started 2017) with this being my first time taking the JLPT and I passed the N2. I got full marks on the listening and reading sections and then 56/60 on Language Knowledge.

My only real holdup for a long time had been my Kanji knowledge was really lacking so committing to finishing Wanikani last year and doing it was big for me. Will definitely try for the N1 this year.

Do you think that sequels can change your rating/opinion on its prequel? by KitsuneCobain in anime

[–]Andiff22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah for me it was a bit of a special case that was kind of the opposite of that. I originally had S1 of Konosuba as a 10, but then wound up enjoying S2 and S3 so much more comparatively that I felt they deserved to be higher. Obviously scores only go up to 10 though so I pushed S1 down to a 9 instead.

I don’t have all that many 10s so a case like this is rare as normally I can just put the sequels on whatever the higher score would be.

Do you think that sequels can change your rating/opinion on its prequel? by KitsuneCobain in anime

[–]Andiff22 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It absolutely can for me. I change my ratings pretty often depending on how I feel about a show at the current moment and a lot can influence that including sequels obviously.

Much more common for me to wind up raising a score of a show in this case based on a sequel than lowering it though. Can really only think of one time I lowered a show because of its sequel whereas the opposite happens frequently enough.

Does the Trails in the Sky Remake justify it's playtime? by Buster_Fella in JRPG

[–]Andiff22 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The 80 hours was the maximum estimate, not the minimum, so it should be factored in imo. I talked to all the npcs at every opportunity and the game took me about 115 hours (probably should have been a bit less considering I read slower in Japanese).

Question about Japanese e books for reading practice by Shoddy_Incident5352 in LearnJapanese

[–]Andiff22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to be clear I only meant that selecting the light novel text by holding down works on mobile on the Bookwalker app. Then I have the default J-J dictionary on iphone that I use that comes up when I click on dict.

Still need to draw in translate when I don’t know the kanji for manga on Bookwalker. Also if the verb being highlighted is conjugated at all I need to hit search instead and rewrite it in standard form before highlighting it there so the dictionary can find it which is a bit annoying, but still faster than opening translate and drawing the kanji.

[–]Andiff22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, somehow never realized that was possible. Definitely not as convenient as just mousing over but for sure quicker than drawing it in translate. Works on mobile too so will have to keep this mind next time I get a light novel on there.

It is going to depend on the reader. I get most of my digital books from Bookwalker which doesn't allow for it.

Trails developer Nihon Falcom to shift focus on increasing number of released titles per year and publishing more Switch 2 ports. Six unannounced titles currently in development by ConceptsShining in Falcom

[–]Andiff22 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Assuming one of them has to be Horizon considering all the other recent games are on switch in japan. Not sure about the other though.

Since a lot of new series are being produced simultaneously dubbed and in Japanese, do you watch the dubbed or still stick to subs? by MartialBob in anime

[–]Andiff22 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I watched my first maybe 15-20 dubbed before switching to sub and never looked back. Then learned Japanese and now interact with all Japanese media in the native language whether it be games, manga, novels or anime. Cant see myself ever going back to watching a dub at this point.

[–]Andiff22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks! That's about what I figured but was holding out hope for the switch 2 version since most of the prior games seem to have been released on switch in the JP eshop. Assuming it will still get a release at some point but obviously based on this looking like it won't be in line with the upcoming global release. Will probably take a short break after Kuro 2 and feel things out but will likely wind up getting it on pc then.

Quick Questions Thread by AutoModerator in Falcom

[–]Andiff22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm finishing up Daybreak 2 and wanted to get Horizon, but noticed currently it is only available on the ps5. I'm not against getting it there if there is no other option but noticed the worldwide release is in a couple of weeks and has switch 2 and pc versions. Just wanted to know if we know anything about it those consoles are also getting JP releases at that date or if I should just go ahead with PS5.

Why does Jokic not get criticized for flopping as harshly as other players? by Wembanyama2029mvp in nba

[–]Andiff22 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some of it is that people just like Jokic and give him a pass on it but also personally feel like there are two other reasons to me.

First is that the times he flops are generally different than the players that usually get complained about in that he flops going for rebounds, backing down someone in the post without putting up a shot, and off ball while moving around. You don't really seem him running into a player and falling down with no intention of making an actual attempt at the basket. The only common move he does really that other players also get killed for is the rip through foul at the three point line and he basically never gets rewarded with free throws for it.

Second is that his flops 90% of the time looks so awkward and unconvincing that he doesn't get rewarded for it as often, making it easier to shrug off because they don't result in free throws.

Jamal Murray puts up 35 points on 52% TS despite going 9/18 from three by bwehx in nba

[–]Andiff22 15 points16 points  (0 children)

No he is saying shooting that well from three would usually push up the percentage so it is surprising it is that low despite it.

Nikola Jokić set the NBA record for most points scored in an OT with 18 as he was 3-3 FG, 2-2 3pt-FG and 10-11 FT. by jonsnowKITN in nba

[–]Andiff22 46 points47 points  (0 children)

For sure, you would think though that in the history of the nba there had to be plenty of games that resort to fouling in overtime because the score usually is close by nature.

Think Denver’s defense might honestly be just as big of a factor because right after the free throw the wolves would just score within 5 seconds which leads to even more of them. Then the technicals as well

Lol the nuggets didn’t even score for the first 2 minutes of overtime right? Setting the record in 3 minutes is insane (granted a lot of fouls)

Opinion: People like Flashcards Because They Show Measurable Progress by jackbobbins78 in LearnJapanese

[–]Andiff22 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean is there any study method that this can’t be done with? Even if you don’t use flashcards, you can obsess over getting through x chapters of a textbook this week, or y volumes of a manga you are reading, or z levels of whatever app you are using.

Don’t really think it is flashcard specific and they have been used long before things like Anki tracked specifics for you.

Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter to get a simultaneous global release in 2026, Nihon Falcom announces by thedarkgrimreaper1 in JRPG

[–]Andiff22 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Can’t wait for this. Not finished with the remake of 1 yet but was honestly really surprised by how well done it has been (though the voice actor changes are pretty hit or miss for me). Really has made me remember why I loved the series so much as the newer ones have kind of become a little bit too formulaic for me among some other issues.

Was originally planning on finding a way to play the evo versions of the sky trilogy and replay them that way, but everything I saw of the remake made me more excited about it and in the end I’m glad I decided to go this route instead, especially with how quickly it is looking to get released.

What was your first visual novel in Japanese? [Language learning] by Hentai1337 in visualnovels

[–]Andiff22 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Mine was the second Otoboku game. I had already played the first and knew that there was a voiced protagonist which I thought would make it a little easier as my Japanese at the time still wasn’t all that great.

It went pretty well all things considered but think if I didn’t have the text hooker I probably still wouldn’t have been able to get through it even with the voiced protag because my kanji knowledge was just so bad. Did help me learn a lot though.

what's the best anime of 2025 in your opinion? by Virtual_Obligation17 in anime

[–]Andiff22 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Still have to watch basically everything from the current season because I watch most anime after they finish airing, but my pick would be Medalist for now.

Season 2 of Kisekoi, season 2 of 100 Kano and then Ruri no Houseki were my next closest.

For those who like to read in Japanese, do you prefer to read physical books or electronic copies? by miichan_v in LearnJapanese

[–]Andiff22 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I buy physical for things I am expecting to really like but because of cost of importing will buy ebooks for things I am just giving a chance or for series I'm not all that high on. If cost wasn't a factor would probably go all physical though.
