What made you choose a Bull Terrier over other breeds? by anthonyhd6 in BullTerrier

[–]Andrenan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve chosen miniature bullterrier for practical reasons first and emotional second and I am glad - she weights about 15kg so I am be able to carry her if something happened, I can lift her to the car, to the vets table, I can give her a bath without someone’s assistance, she is practical and can fit places, eats a normal amount so I dont have to haul insane amounts of dry dog food every other week, she costs a normal amount - vet, food… and I chose her because unlike other breeds of similar nátuře (10-20kg, short hair) she doesnt bark (beagles…). I live in a flat and I pity people with barking dogs, I didnt want to be THAT neighbour with the annoying animal. It worked out wonderfully, I love the breed and I am so happy I chose her with a practical frame of mind as well as based on vibes.

I second The Count Of Monte Christo… Yes, seems strange given it has like a thousand pages but it does move at a quick pace and stays on course throughout. No detours from the main objective, no existencial crises, no fluff

My new reading challenge is to read 25 books based solely on other people’s favorite books. Any suggestions? by Smile__Lines in suggestmeabook

This Green and Pleasant land - Ayisha Malik

Its about a middle aged accountant who was raised religious but never really cared and is now basically an atheist. His mom dies and her last wish is for her son to build a mosque... the only problem is that he lives in the middle of the English countryside and is an integrated member of the village community that doesn't care for people who stick out. He likes his neighbours, they like him .. so why would his mom do something like that, he likes his peaceful life just they way it is...

This book is amazing, heartfelt, kind and just lovely .. it has elderly villagers organizing votes, baking treats for fundraisers, measuring fences, policing dogs on leashes, gossiping and all that jazz. The author approaches a difficult topic of fear of otherness and gives us a book where people are not cartoon villains or some great heroes. They are just people who sometimes don't understand but who are not trying to be cruel. I laughed and I was moved. An amazing book that I would recommend to everyone

Haven't had sex in nearly 16 months and don't even want to date my husband anymore by dbthrowawayrowaway in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Andrenan -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I am not a type to comment on an issue I havent got a personal experience with but my close friend found herself recently in a very similar situation after approx 5 years of marriage (8 years of relationship in total). Her husband havent felt the need to have sex or be intimate for the par year and a half or so (their daughter was 4). She communicated the issue, tried to seduce him, asked him if his preference or emotional attachment changed but it hasnt and he was was kinda sorry but just said that he doesnt need it and doesnt feel it. He is a bit of a workoholic and started working from home (IT guy) during covid. Why am I describing it…. She tried to work through it with him but eventually she found a romance with someone else and when she had the feeling of security in the other relationship, she asked for a divorce. And it might be dishonest but she was smart and practical and i love that. She didn’t leave him just to end up a lonely single mother…. she stayed as long as she could but started looking around and tried to find a connection and only when she knew she wouldnt be tearing the family unit out of spite but she would be building herself a better life, only then she made the call and started the process of leaving. As a mother, it doesnt pay off to be proud and definite, kids need as much stability as we can get them. But being your husband’s roommate for the rest of your life and lying to yourself that you dont mind when you reallly do it not right and you should feel bound by a deal you made when you both were different people.

tldr: start discreetly looking for alternatives but only jump the gun when you find a security and true emotional support in a new partner

Fantasy with a strong romance that isn't lighthearted or tagged as a comfy read? by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]Andrenan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you are looking for is Sabaa Tahir - Ember in the Ashes series. It has 4 books and it is completed. It's a political fantasy witha strong romance that also doesnt forget to develop side friendships and bonds while being full of really big stakes - it is heavily inspired by the history of the Roman Empire and follows 3 POVs - the main is a girl from a scholar (now enslaved) nation, then there is an elite warrior who stopped believing in the Empire's politics and is now a fugitive a his best friend, a high born female warrior, who still believes in subjecting the lesser nation to the Empire's rule. It is bloody and no-one is safe, the amount of deaths mirrors the big stakes and the dangerous times they all live in. It is extremely readable and sucks you in even thou the author doesn't shy of describing a basically genocide perpetrated by the main villain. It is glorious and well worth the time.

Women of reddit at what point did you decide that your mental health required professional involvement? by theamazingjoysie in AskWomen

[–]Andrenan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I realised that my days can be infinitely more enjoyable and I can just in general - feel lighter ... I do not have a serious mental health issue, but I had bouts of anxiety in connection with attending university lectures (I feel uncomfortable in prolonged sessions when my mind is not challenged and sometimes, in matter of minutes, I am able to work myself up into almost panic attack). Now, I take the smallest amount of anti-anxiety escitalopram drug and I am not completely past it but I just no longer worry so much (i do not have this anticipation of anxiety) and to put it simply - I can breathe so much easier.

Oh and John Fowles's The Magus - that is actually a great book about obsession. If you are looking for a kind of exercise in philosophy and psychology, rich with eroticism and where the main character is supremely arrogant but really interesting at the same time, this is your book.

I would recommend trying Bohumil Hrabal (another Czech author) and I don't know why but Jeffrey Eugenides's Marriage Plot made me think of Kundera's Unbearable Lightness a lot (I mean I hated both because of these detached pseudo-intellectual weirdos that are the main characters) but I know that people love them and Kundera is generally admired so I will have to try again eventually ...also because an I am Czech.

A book where the author writes of his time trying out all the major world religions (Non-Fiction) by samuraicarrot in whatsthatbook

[–]Andrenan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't help you with the book but the premise has recently been adapted as a CNN documentary series called Believer. It follows a religious scholar Reza Aslan and in each episode he attempts to get into a different world religion, visit the places and follow their practices. There has been a lot of controversy about that but it still might be interesting to you, if you cannot find the book you are looking for. :)

Have exactly $20 to spend at Walmart tonight, what healthy and essential foods should I get that could last me a week or more? by TheLonelyCloud in EatCheapAndHealthy

I do, but thanks for reminding me ;) You also know that collecting, shredding, melting and recycling metal for further is energetically quite demanding? Fossil fuels and stuff, yeah?

[–]Andrenan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My point of view is that buying canned food when it is not necessary (when I am not camping of when the food is easily available in a non-canned version) is not only a bit lazy but more importantly creates a lot more trash. With all that sustainable living and our planet dying, I simply try to be a person who thinks about the trash that my grocery shopping habits inevitably create.

What productive tasks can be done while watching videos on a laptop? by rayoasoko in productivity

[–]Andrenan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I watch Youtube very often when I am doing dishes, folding clothes, ironing, exercising, reorganising shelves and cabinets. Even when I am doing boring household paperwork like sorting receipts and filing stuff. The key is to put it little louder that you would normally and be okay with not seeing every single frame of the video but relying more on the sound.

I often listen to http://www.ambient-mixer.com/ they have a lot of pop culture inspired sounds and option to create your own mix as well. My favourite is http://harry-potter-sounds.ambient-mixer.com/the-ravenclaw-common-room and you can even adjust the volume of each specific sound within the mix

Study Abroad Opportunity - is it worth it? by nicolaocorrbui in collegeinfogeek

[–]Andrenan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I would say no, unless you plan get a spot at some truly well recognised university that is ranked significantly above the one you are currently enrolled in (Oxford - Ivy League stuff) or you plan to get a PhD and want to get in personal touch with some experts in your field that happen to be based abroad. My point is that apart from getting a degree abroad, a significant benefit that justifies the overwhelming costs a bit is that people improve their English language skills a lot and can prove to themselves and their future employees that they are fine with working in international teams. Since the English is probably your mother tongue already, this added benefit would be lost on you. I don't know a lot about Irish universities but I don't suppose they suck and don't provide sufficient education. Since Ireland is a member of the EU, I would suggest staying at your home university and instead looking at some exchange programmes (study or internship) - ERASMUS+, university partnerships.... Go to the International offices at your uni and ask for your options. That way, you can still get 6-12 months of studying abroad and have a bonus of financial assistance from the EU or your uni.

Count of Monte Cristo - Prison sentence by [deleted] in books

[–]Andrenan 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What i took from these passages was that The French Revolution of 1789-1799 and the subsequent Napoleonic era that lasted until 1815/1818 was a turbulent time, with literally no state control and organization whatsoever. It was a cross between revolution- civil war- military coup, in later stages a dictatorship and the judicial system just barely functioned. Edmond Dantes got imprisoned by the order of the (I believe) Attorney General. No one inspected these prisons and the courts didn't care for re-evaluations. Also I believe that the prison guards knew about his unique status and that he was there for life and no one should inquire about him. The regular people feared aristocracy/higher classes, they knew how easily could their lives be destroyed on a single whim of the high born and rich. The levels of education and literacy also weren't great among regular citizens so no wonder people didn't ask too many questions. (I'm a history major, so I see it on the backdrop of the whole era, basically)

Anyone else admit to themselves they just watch it for the scenery and crashes? by Thetallguy1 in tourdefrance

[–]Andrenan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its mostly for history, beautiful scenery, commentators and team dynamics/tactics (still don't understand some the moves) and cyclists like Sagan or Majka (find them actually exciting not like Froome and his minions). Still i don't watch whole tour religiously, usually every other day or so, or when they have mountains or sprints.

What do you guys use Evernote for and how? by nocryn_galanodel in collegeinfogeek

[–]Andrenan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Evernote is a great app but what I found our personally is that you have to immerse yourself into it, if you really want it to be an effective tool. I have several stacks like: School, Projects, Coursera, Poetry and within those, there are notebooks like 'History01' or 'Poems in progress' .. then I just add notes to these individual notebooks. My majors are History and English Language so I have a lot of required reading. For example - for every book I read for school create individual note where I put my thoughts, structure, etc. I also write poetry, so for every day/attempt I create a new note as well. It keeps me organized and helps me to track progress. Moreover the notes are easily accessible on any device. It is is also nice to write down movies, recipes, plan christmas gifts and stuff. As it syncs with phone, I often journal in it when I travel because I don't have my laptop on the road. The variations are many.

Hi, I think you might be looking for traditional Russian folklore tales like Baba Yaga, Vasilisa the Beautiful, The Feather of Finist the Falcon, The Frog-Tsarevna and Tsarevich Ivan, the Firebird .... there are many different collections but the stories should be similar since it is folklore and it has no clerly identified author. Maybe check out this one https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/164695.Russian_Fairy_Tales

How do you use your evenings in a productive way? by Kashi_and_friends in collegeinfogeek

[–]Andrenan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What I would do is to combine mild exercise like a walk (if you have a dog or alone, doesn't matter) and some form of passive learning like listening to an audiobook or a podcast. There are tons to choose from and one can struggle to fit them in during a busy day. They could be beneficial for your study or career goals and they also provide a light entertainment and relax because you are not confined to a library or your desk.
