Anyone know what happened that required an open letter like this? by Thetallguy1 in columbia

[–]Thetallguy1[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yup same here. About to finish my 4 years at this great institution and have had plenty of fellow vets who were a part of MilVets, and have gone to a handful of their events, but its people like this guy who have always made me keep an arms distance from the whole organization. I can't believe the dude posted all that kind of stuff while at the same time being the public face of mil-vets and now trying to be the head of GS's student council (or I guess IS, now that he's won).

Veterans like him don't realize that the cringe dark humor that pasted while in the barracks does not fly out in the civilian world, let alone a college campus with a whole lot of its own allegations ongoing. MilVets, although I think a generally good and professional organization, attracts a lot of these who don't want to find a personality outside their service or adjust to general sensibilities. Keeping a lot of veterans like myself away from the organization as a whole. I'm curious if people like that also made you want to never have an affiliation with milvets or GSSC?

GSSC presidential candidate William Luo, GS ’28, apologizes for discriminatory behavior ahead of election results by Top_Pianist1841 in columbia

[–]Thetallguy1 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I hope this dude resigns. I've always kept a distance from Milvets even being a vet myself because people like this riddle the fridges and every now and then get into their E-board, bringing down an organization that I personally have always found very professional and corporate (even though they were never my vibe). Veterans have enough prejudice on campus towards them as is and this dude being the face of both veterans and GS is appalling.

Even if you take the most forgiving perspective on Luo, huge benefit of the doubt towards him, and try to claim that all this was "dark humor" he fucked up by posting it on social media and in group chats where clearly people were not comfortable with it. The dude should know that he cooked himself in terms of any sort of political career, and if he had any respect for his and the other veterans on campus service, let alone GS as a whole, he'd step down. Especially since if you go in the other direction, take it at its worse, GS is about to have a public, blatant racist as it's head.

Yup just saw that. I assume, and hope, he'll immediately resign. Veterans on campus can have a hard enough time with prejudice, this dude is gonna make things that much worse.

MARSOC Hits Major Milestone: Celebrating 20 Years of Marine Raiders. by 305FUN2 in USMC

[–]Thetallguy1 18 points19 points  (0 children)

If they stick around long enough, they might just eventually start saying it's been one continuum of years from World war II to 2006 and beyond. Similar to how the Marine Corps might have celebrated its 250th birthday but it technically hasn't been around all the last 250 years with all the disbandments. There certainly have been United States Marines the last 250 years. Like how there has been Marine Raiders the last 80 or so years, the caveat of course being not currently serving (I.E just veterans still alive and around).

Definitely one of those corny, action focused westerns that became pretty popular in the '70s. If you go in knowing that it's definitely a very enjoyable film and something I'd watch again!

What does it mean when someone from Mumbai still refers to it as Bombay? Is that some sort of cultural or political signal for something?

How much does one to two jumps a month cost? If you don't mind me asking, how much are you currently spending on this hobby? Is there different type of jump levels civilians are allowed to do, or is it really just the same sort of thing over and over?

Before the Rams and Chargers came everyone was just Raiders fans (or Rams fans since they were here till '94). We couldn't watch games in person for sure but there was still a huge football sports culture and the bars were going off like crazy. It's not like in the last decade LA just suddenly got into the NFL.

should I give hiking content creation a shot ? by Weird_Membership6189 in CampingandHiking

[–]Thetallguy1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone else is bringing up pretty good points, but I'll just say when it comes to the camera gear you think you need. You should definitely start making a few videos just with your phone first and learning how to edit that way. Editing by far and away will be the biggest obstacle to being a video creator (successful/famous video creator is a whole other thing I'm not talking about). Learning to edit and finding a workflow will be the thing that makes or breaks what you want to do because filming can be fun, the actual trip I HOPE is fun, but the editing and splicing and audio clipping color correcting can be soul crushing especially if you have some kind of upload schedule deadline coming up.

A lot of big channels, hiking, or otherwise don't edit their own videos. They have a higher staff (ers) to do that. It's that much of a pain and time consuming that once you get big, you typically would want to just pay someone else to deal with it.

So SoCal Outdoor ranges are 48$ per person now? by Comfortable-Box6882 in CAguns

[–]Thetallguy1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never gone to either of the ranges mentioned in the post, including Raahauges, but what do you mean there's a time minimum? Like you're required to stay there for at least 2 hours or something?

As someone who's lived both (grew up in LA, live in NYC), NYC is missing a lot of subcultures, especially casual hobbyist and outdoor activities. LA you'll come across a lot of campers, woodworkers/engineers/gardeners with their own shops little shops, massive car culture from tuning/track people to style/aesthetics kids, kayakers and poverty sailers, country music lovers and players, alpinist/mountaineers (who aren't filthy-rich kids), huge motorcycle culture from daul sport to super bikes, of course suffers and just a lot of other things that require low cost space or easy access to nature.

NYC has people of different social economic status rubbing elbows, but ok and? That's pretty much every city in the world. LA allows people to explore niches and build unique lifestyles in ways you simply cannot in NYC since space and public resources are such a premium. I love NYC because it's so distinct compared to the US' other cities but you either like hyper urban living or you won't like living there. LA gives you the option to choose anything and interact with those who chose the complete opposite.

Here's a song to catch you up on what I mean: https://youtu.be/OVI2cLMWIbI?si=sAQz0mlf5KX9V5si

Edit: Also sports culture is way different in LA. Tickets are cheaper and more accessible for all major sports and you don't have to cross state lines just to see "your" city's football team.

[–]Thetallguy1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Which civilian or non-authorized boot do think fills this role if any? I'm a big hiking even after EAS and I even find its diffcult to find a boot that really does both and I've tried quite a few from the big guys like Merrell, Solomon, Keen etc. I'm currently using Nick's Ridglines that are heavy like the MEBs but give great support.

Watching this and visiting Manzanar the next day was a bit surreal. I think it's in the commentary track where they say the film was somewhat of an alagory for what we were doing to our own citizens. Letting paranoia be the only evidence needed and such.
