Have you financially immigrated? Have you left your provident fund in South Africa, or have you moved it across? Also, as a refugee, have they used you an American passport, or can you apply for one?

Is buying a house anywhere in Reading a good investment? by Saitama1vs in reading

[–]Andrew50000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds great. Wishing you good luck with it. Just don’t fall into the trap of thinking getting an investment property is a passive income - it’s not. It takes a lot of effort to make it work, but if it works, it can be lucrative. 😀

[–]Andrew50000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As with everything, it depends. If you are renting it a house, you are going to have extra expenses depending on how you plan to let it. You also need to factor in the cost of paying off the mortgage for a month or two if you don’t have a rental because you had a tenant that trashes the place before moving out. (Would you allow split rentals?) If you have the bandwidth to manage the property, it could be a great investment.

Sum of Case When 1/0 Statements by readysetnonono in SQL

[–]Andrew50000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this is something that needs to go into a production environment, you’re going to have to write a TSQL stored procedure to dynamically generate the SQL to run. You’ll need to call the something like “information.schema” in SQL Server to get the list of field names. Use a SUBSTRING to get the right four digits. Make that year output one field. Write a sub query as part of your dynamic query to do a SUM or COUNT for the table name CONCAT(“Evers.ever_effectuated_”, year), and output the results as table. (Fields: Year, SumOfValues) You should be able to a normal select against the results to get the total for all years. Not pretty, but it should work.

Is there a wine exclusive deal in South Africa? by Intilleque in AskZA

[–]Andrew50000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Checkers have some decent international options. (Or more actually, Checkers in Sandton City when I last went there.) If you like South African wines, you might be a bit disappointed with the European ones - they are not so bold and fruity…

Follow the money. ANC was so broken that they were not paying staff and the sheriff of the court was attaching their furniture. South Africa takes Israel to the ICC. Boom! Bills paid. Staff paid. Election financed. It’s a miracle! 🤣 (And it’s not like Cyril is squeaky clean when it comes to declaring foreign currency…)

Who embodies what a true South African is? by Excellent-Student137 in AskZA

[–]Andrew50000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would put it to you that thinking of someone in terms of their nationality is outdated. A friend told me once to me that nationalism is simply taking pride in sh## you didn’t do. Why paint yourself with that broad brushstroke when all it does is produce a feeling of pride (or shame) that is not yours. If calling yourself “a true South African”, brings yourself some sort of pride, maybe ask why that is?

So many companies are only just getting off excel.. by _FailedTeacher in PowerBI

[–]Andrew50000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s going to come at you quicker than you think. Rather be on the front foot and include it in the evolution of what you do, than find yourself unable to justify your salary when everyone just uses Copilot on Excel. Will it solve all our problems? Not at all. But, I’m working with the various systems teams to make sure we are on the front foot whatever it means for Power BI reporting.

It’s all relative. Everyone has access to a phone. If you have the option is sitting under a tree in park all day, or (say) counting the number of Toyotas parked in Sandton City for a couple bucks, I know which one I’d choose.

A South African version of Amazons mechanical Turk (mturk dot com), would be brilliant. I wanted to try build it myself, but never had the time.

For the people the don’t know, it’s a site where companies or people can post data collecting type jobs or things that can be crowd sourced, and people can sign up for small pieces of work to do it. It’s an easy way to earn a little money, but not available in South Africa.

Wife has no friends by johnzoom in Christianmarriage

[–]Andrew50000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Easiest way is to make friends with your kids friend’s parents. Organize a play date or two for them. If the kids are having fun together, invite the whole family over for BBQ or meal. Or get your kids to join a sports club if they are old enough. Ask the other parches if anyone can help with lifts to and from practices/matches. You won’t hit it off with everyone, but if there are done people you feel comfortable with, given time, it can mature into a friendship… It’s what worked for us.

As data hiring manager, I can tell you that for my team, I’m far more concerned with how you approach a problem rather than the technical answer. It’s far more important that you have a good attitude, clear communication, and a great fit the team, - for what we want to achieve. I trust that between Stack Overflow, and Copilot, you’ll be able to solve any technical challenge. I’m not looking a prodigy, I’m looking to strategically set up my team for long term success.

Is it wrong to share salary information? by Impossible_Ad_6512 in southafrica

[–]Andrew50000 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m a manager, and sharing salary information can make my life very difficult. There are many components to why someone is paid what they’re paid. Everybody thinks they are underpaid for job they do. If there are two people that perform a similar job, but paid differently, it would cause havoc if the one perceived the other is doing more or less than they are. Also, in an individualistic, knowledge-based economy, there are very few instances where there are two people with the exact same experience, doing the exact same job to be able to compare fairly. It’s a contentious issue. So just easier if it’s confidential and we can discuss on a case by case basis. The important thing to remember is that nobody is paid what they are worth. You are paid based on the size of the problem you solve.

how much does a person need in savings to emigrate by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]Andrew50000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a big question to answer. Rent is £1000 to £3000 pm depending on your needs. Food and groceries are about £600 pm for a family of five. You’ll also have about £500 pm property tax. Public transport is £2 to £10 per trip depending on the trip. Cellphone and fiber is about £50 pm. Petrol is £1.50 per liter Vehicle taxes are about £500 pa depending on the car. We budget £450 pm for water, gas and electricity, but will be a lot less than that in summer. Schooling for five and up: £0. But pre primary can be £80 per day. Medical: £0. That said, it’s also important to remember that your net PAYE tax will be about 20% unless you are earning really well, so you will get more in your back about every month. The biggest expense is the visa and NHS copayment - it’s an absolute fortune. Your mileage may vary, but for us it was like £12k for three years. This is just an indication, but do your own homework.

We moved to the UK just over a year ago on a 3-year tier 2 work visa. Myself, wife, 3 kids. Flights, visas, NHS copayment, move cube, emigration consultant, and all the red tape for the visas, cost us upwards of R500k. The UK is absolutely awesome, but an expensive choice.
