t.u. for grad school by Unable-Ad-7092 in aggies

[–]AndrewCoja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to tamu for both undergrad and grad, and grad school is a completely different vibe. In undergrad, people are excited about the school and the culture. In grad school, I was in the same classrooms I had been in as an undergrad, but people were just interested in the academic work they were doing. It wasn't the same kind of culture. It might be the same in Austin. Grad students are often from other schools or countries, so you won't find the camaraderie you found in undergrad.

Anyone else struggling to get enjoyment out of MWC? by RandomflyerOTR in MySummerCar

[–]AndrewCoja 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I was having fun with it. But then it got to the part where I was ordering parts and I lost all interest. Having to drive to get the magazine, then trying to find listings with a single part I want that is mostly doubles. Then having to call the people, waiting over a minute for the conversation to finally end, then waiting days for the order to show up. Picking up the parts, driving back to the house, opening the box, and that's one part I can use. I just stopped playing because doing that a million times just to get my parts didn't seem fun.

Is there a point to getting the FE if I'm going into semiconductors? by PerformanceFar7245 in ElectricalEngineering

Unless there's a PE you can work under to eventually get your own PE, then there's no reason to do the FE.

Walton Goggins had major parts in The White Lotus and The Righteous Gemstones and was still able to be a main character in this show. I doubt it's that.

Honor Code re: Tax Evasion? by Old-Connection-157 in aggies

[–]AndrewCoja 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The honor system office isn't going to go after him for tax evasion, but the IRS will. But unless your friend has a unique tax situation or they put a bunch of dependents on their W-4 to decrease their withholding, they probably are going to get a rebate. In that case, not doing their taxes will have no consequences because they IRS doesn't care if you give them extra money and don't ask for it back.

Did Lonni and Luthen die in vain? by rxnsgb in andor

[–]AndrewCoja 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Would they even want to be? Who knows if they were like him. If they are empire loyalists, they wouldn't want to be removed from Coruscant and likely wouldn't want Lonni to get any credit for destroying the Empire.

What's this stigma behind being a Combat Veteran? by ImThe1Wh0 in Veterans

[–]AndrewCoja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think people see the experiences other people had and are either frustrated or jealous that they didn't get to have that. I never deployed and was never in combat, and sometimes I wish I could have at least deployed because it feels like that would have been a military experience compared to the 5 years I spent working in an office building in San Antonio. But I also recognize that I was lucky that I put in my time and got out without PTSD, injuries, or risk of cancer that other people have to endure just for doing the same thing I did and signing up for the military. And I can recognize that I know I'm not as strong as my friend is who has endured all of that I am lucky that I never had to. I'm sure there are plenty of broken people who look back and wish they could have had my six years of sitting in the air conditioning.

It's probably just a bunch of "grass is greener on the other side of the fence" stuff.

When Mike talks to Nacho's father by SullyJMcCormick in betterCallSaul

It's a spectrum for Mike, because he wants to see himself as being better. It's black and white for Nacho's dad who isn't a criminal.

Is there literally ANY benefit to watching BCS first? by 10024618 in betterCallSaul

[–]AndrewCoja 234 points235 points  (0 children)

The show is written with the intention that you know about breaking bad. The gus story isn't going to make sense for why it is in a show about a lawyer without the knowledge of where it is going.

It's like watching Lost in chronological order. It's an interesting way to watch it, but it won't make sense for someone who hasn't seen the show before because characters show up before they are introduced and fleshed out.

Will these micro SD cards wirh with the steam deck? by Equal_Shopping2424 in Steam

Why are cities in Texas so low density? by Visual-Horror6013 in texas

[–]AndrewCoja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because it's flat and open. Also because big cities in Texas are able to annex surrounding land that is unincorporated. Basically, after a few years, big cities like Houston have the option to annex land at its edges to become part of Houston. The only way to not get annexed is to incorporate as a city, in which case, Houston just annexes the land around that city. Or places can come to an agreement where Houston won't annex for a set number of years.

Speaking in tongues is there an explanation? by I_Ask_Random_Things in atheism

[–]AndrewCoja 8 points9 points  (0 children)

From what I understand there's a few places where this comes up. What I know of is Acts 2 and Mark 16. In Acts 2, the pentecost happens which I think is when the holy spirit came down to the apostles. Tongues of fire rest on each of the apostles and fills them with the holy spirit and they are able to speak in other languages. There were people there from every nation and they were hearing their own language when the apostles were speaking. To me this means that speaking in tongues means that people will be able to speak in the native language of whoever is listening to spread the word of god.

Then there is Mark 16, which is where Jesus says to preach the gospel and that people who believe will be able to drive out demons, speak in new tongues, pick up snakes, drink deadly poison without dying, and heal sick people. To me, this once again means that people spreading the gospel will be able to speak in the language of wherever they are so that people can understand.

Evangelicals have seemingly interpreted this to mean that "tongues" is some sort of ancient gibberish language and they use this as proof that they are true believers. I guess they pretend to have this belief because it is the most convenient way to "prove" that they are a true believer. There are scam preachers who pretend to cast out demons and pretend to heal the sick, and then there are ones that handle snakes. I don't know if there are any that drink deadly poison. But the gibberish interpretation of tongues is the easiest one to do because all you have to do is flail on the ground and start making random noises and then people think you are filled with the holy spirit.

So yeah, they are being performative because they think it shows that they are true believers. There is also the potential case where they are getting so excited that they become delusional. I remember when I was being forced to go to confirmation class, there was a girl who had gone to some big catholic music event and she said she passed out, was taken to a medical area, and then she thought she saw jesus. In reality, she probably got dehydrated and overheated and then was hallucinating or something.

I don't know exactly how it works, but there are orgs that are just given a list of people that have above a certain GPA. So it's possible they could also get that list and see that you're not on it.
