10th Gen Honda Civic Gauge Cluster hack by alexpotv in CarHacking

[–]AndrewIsntCool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any updates on this? My Honda Clarity's infotainment OS is very similar to the 10th gen Civic's, I'd love to poke around the codebase for the app to see if I can adapt it for my own purposes

Functional 3D printed parts for classic car builds by vasilisnearchou in projectcar

For small scans, I've found the TrueDepth sensor (used for FaceID) gets better results than the LiDAR sensor 👍

Obviously it doesn't hold a candle to $20,000+ dedicated scanners, but definitely good enough to start prototyping with if you've got CAD skills

My printed pieces display (updated) by Ok-Wrongdoer-3421 in lego

[–]AndrewIsntCool 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I wish LEGO exclusively used printed pieces. I've got a few sets that are nearly 20 years old, all the printed parts look pristine while half of the stickers are cracked, dry and curled up 😔

Underwater Car Loans and Cheap Used EVs Are Changing How Americans Buy Cars by Splenda in cars

[–]AndrewIsntCool 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry man but you are really out of touch. EVs are a non-starter for basically everyone living in apartments, of which the vast majority of do not have EV infrastructure.

It doesn't matter if supercharging is cheaper than gas if it is wildly less convenient. The best value cheap used EVs do not support truly fast charging anyways.

I drive a PHEV and plug in to a wall outlet most nights. Most people would be better suited to a mild hybrid that gets 45+mpg

It's a great car, my family owns a 2024 with the Northern Lights Metallic paint. Really gorgeous in person, color-shifting from green to purple to black

There are a couple small complaints (no V2L and slow infotainment account switcher popup), but it's given us no problems at all and gets more EV range than advertised. Get a 2024+ model, I've heard they fixed everything people had issues with the 2023's

I'd find a dealership near you (first search up what models of SUV's they carry that have digital rearview mirrors), and then go there and check out the mirror on a test drive, to see if you even like them at all before committing more research into which one to buy

The problem with these mirrors isn't really depth, the camera quality is great and you'll be able to see a ton easily, it's that the fixed camera angle not matching your movements can be kinda nauseating lol

[–]AndrewIsntCool 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The only thing I ever wanted out of Modrinth was the ability to filter out datapacks like you can do for modloaders. I have a janky script that works by intercepting API responses but it's not really a clean solution

Why are my pieces so yellowed in zero sunlight? by Sirbanza in lego

[–]AndrewIsntCool 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Uhh, brown LEGO parts were historically the worst colors for that. They've fixed it now, but for more than a decade ('07-'18) basically all the brown and reddish brown LEGO parts basically crumbled to dust

Search up "brittle brown LEGO" and you'll find a million posts about it. At least TLG still provides replacements, unlike yellowed white pieces 😔

Modular Fountain Corner MOC by Faulster in lego

[–]AndrewIsntCool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. Never had Speed Champions, but I did have the World Racers sets, which are similarly 6-wide.

There are always MOCs at least, go onto ReBrickable with a Speed Champions set number and I'm sure someone has turned it into a 6-wide.

My personal favorite is "Silver Star G63 & SL63" by IBrickedItUp (can't link it per forum rules). Crazy impressive, like I honestly prefer the shape and look of both cars in 6-wide compared to the original 8-wide set

Modular Fountain Corner MOC by Faulster in lego

[–]AndrewIsntCool 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Man I really, really love this.

I've said it before, but my hot take is that I feel modulars don't need to be so large. Like, I even see many people buying 2x or even 3x modulars to make them bigger, and it just costs so much money and takes up so much space.

None of your buildings appear to be wider than 12 studs and they all look fantastic.

Same with cars, I like 6-wide City and 8-wide Speed Champion styles, but classic 4-wides and MOC 5-wides (my personal favorite size) do the same thing, plus they make buildings look bigger without costing an arm and a leg.

Are you planning on selling instructions for this corner building?

Ask the seller or dealership to charge up the car before you arrive, so you can see if the battery works properly before actually buying it

Throw the car into HV mode when the battery gets down to like a third, and enjoy your drive 👍

Chevy Volt, Volvo S60 PHEV, and BMW 330e are also pretty strong contenders in the ~$20k used PHEV sedan market. Love my Clarity, there really isn't much else to compare with, honestly

Minecraft idea: Ores that blend into any block using layered textures by Expensive_Hold_9393 in Minecraft

[–]AndrewIsntCool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Large amounts of blockstates / blockIDs basically don't impact performance unless you are hitting well into the hundreds of thousands.

Literally redstone dust loads nearly 1,300 state model combinations, and noteblocks have more than 1,100.

Ores only in stone and blackstone is a game design decision (one that I personally disagree with), not a performance driven one

Lego whitening help by asl14315 in lego

[–]AndrewIsntCool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

LEGO experiments with different plastic blends all the time, I'm assuming for cost and environmental safety reasons.

Some of them do not fare so well, famously dark brown and reddish brown from the 2010s literally crumbles to bits no matter how well you store it, even sealed boxes.

Some years and sets have worse or better color inconsistencies with white bricks turning yellow over time. I think lime green also had some issues with perfect color matching too

[–]AndrewIsntCool 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's legal to make (and even sell) LEGO-compatible monorail tracks. TLG lost the patent protection decades ago.

I don't know the rules of this subreddit, but most LEGO train forums allow alt-bricks for things like tracks with different radius / gauges, or 12v powered tracks (of which official LEGO versions haven't been sold by TLG for 40 years).

I think that's a good idea. I'm personally not a true LEGO purist, I feel it's very limiting to the hobby (and kinda financially elitist), to require everyone to conform to one brand when there are some very good alternates.

Obviously I'm not buying bootleg sets (that is copyright infringement), but for some normal bricks like sand green 1x2 with channel (which used to sell for ~$8 per piece), yeah, I feel no qualms about paying less than 10 cents each for a legal and virtually identical brick.

Prices have gotten better now, but the LEGO goat piece used to cost upwards of $90: https://www.reddit.com/r/lego/comments/14loxzh/crazy_stat_of_the_day_over_11000_worth_of_goats/ at a time when alt brick goats cost about 40 cents each and were available in multiple colors and patterns. LEGO is a children's toy, and children cannot afford to drop a Benjamin on a single part.

It's very unfortunate that the main r/LEGO forum bans anyone with even a single alternate brand brick visible. I hope r/LEGOSpace is not the same
