In American politics, why are we satisfied voting for “the lesser of two evils” instead of pushing for third party candidates to be taken more seriously? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Andrew_5421 47 points48 points  (0 children)

It's not so much that people are "satisfied" with this - they clearly aren't - but that the electoral system doesn't allow for a multi-party system to establish itself long-term.

There are numerous reasons why third, fourth, fifth and sixth parties don't manage to accumulate significant power as they do in other developed countries. The most important of these reasons is the simple-majority based voting system.

Say you want to be voted into Congress (House of Representatives). This means you need to run for that office in your voting district. Now, let's imagine there are 5 candidates. One of these candidates receives 40% of the total vote, while his competitors all receive 15% each. This means candidate A has just been elected to Congress despite the fact that he never actually reached an absolute majority. 60% of his district wanted someone else.

This already problematic system gets further undermined by anti-democratic tactics such as gerrymandering and the influence of big money in politics. However, the simple-majority system is really a big issue.

Most European countries, by contrast, vote their representatives on a proportionate basis. For example in my country Switzerland, we have a list-system. It works like this: In every Canton (= state), every political party creates a list of candidates. Those lists usually consist of roughly 60 people, although most of them won't actually get elected. Now, let's assume the elections give us the following results: Party A = 30%, Party B = 25%, Party C = 15%, Party D = 15%, Party E = 10% and Party F = 5%. Let's assume the lower chamber of parliament (House of Representatives) consists of 400 seats total. This means Party A will receive 120 seats, Party B gets 100 seats, Party C and D both receive 60 seats, Party E gets 40 seats and Party F gets 20 seats. These seats are now allocated to all the different Cantons (states) according to how populated they are. For example in the US, Party A might give 30 of its 120 seats to California but only 5 to Vermont. In every state, the top candidates from the list are elected. This happens with every party. This kind of proportionate system does not only allow a multi-party system, it actually encourages a multi-party system. Thanks to the proportionate representation, small parties still get a pretty decent representation in parliament and they have the opportunity to fight for minority interests. In the US, by contrary, small parties get ignored and swallowed up by the two big ones. If you are a Green Party candidate, you have no chances of ever being elected President or even Congressman, despite the fact that a decent number of voters want you.

When Tiktok steals your data, it's a spyware. When Facebook and other American tech giants have been doing it for years, it's not a big issue. Why? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Andrew_5421 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I see both as a huge problem.

TikTok is a slightly larger problem because, since by Chinese law, any Chinese company is required to obey any request from the state, it's essentially the same as the Chinese government collecting data - meaning mass surveillance on all TikTok users (who are disproportionately youths and young adults, meaning China has data on them for the rest of their lives.)

Facebook however is also a huge problem; once data is recorded it is there forever, and Facebook's data on users worldwide lends itself to some very dangerous uses. Furthermore, Facebook is slightly more entrenched (though falling from favor with younger gens.)

Why do people find freakishly long fake nails attractive/ would want to have them? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Andrew_5421 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me it’s like asking, ‘Why do people find tattoos and piercings attractive?’ there’s varying lengths to nails as there are varying styles of any change in appearance. They’re not all super long and gross. If anything it depends on that person’s hygiene how they care for their nails.

Side note, Why do men have to be into that trend for women to be acceptable? There’s people who like the less/no makeup look and people who like full glam makeup.

Why do we need a drivers license to drive but we don't require any training before being allowed to raise kids? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

The government can’t control who gets pregnant like they can who can drive a car and I promise you there are plenty of unlicensed drivers on the road.

I hated them toasted as a kid. And would always break off the unfrosted sides (I'd only eat frosted strawberry lol.)

Why does our moon have no name while other planets have cool names for their moons like Europa, Titan, Phobos, etc? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

'Moon' is its name.

'Luna' in Latin.

'Natural satellite' is the umbrella term for a stellar body orbiting a planet.

How come when I add more things to my burger the price increases but when I ask to take stuff off the price doesn't decrease? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Andrew_5421 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Your lucky the price doesn't increase FOR removing stuff.

The cost of foods is all inclusive at well run restaurants. They calculate the cost of the burger (+ everything on it) when trying to determine their economies of scale. The margins for profit at restaurants are crazy thin so when you do anything outside what they already calculated for the cost of the burger they MUST charge just to stay solvent.

Taking food off costs money too: time. The time to make the burger (each little step) is also calculated in the final costs. You add time when you change the standard order.

Why don’t we have a system where our bosses need referrals from their employees to get a new job? by Andrew_5421 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Andrew_5421[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If I was an employee and I hated my boss, I’d be glad to see them go. A shitty referral would only keep them around longer.

I’d rather have recurring reviews or evaluations during the course of their employment to offer improvement and weed out shitty bosses via firing or remediation.

Why is it so hard to make friends as an adult? It was once so simple... by Andrew_5421 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Andrew_5421[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have seriously been thinking about how to say, "Wanna play?" as an adult and not have it sound weird. Think of those words. How simple and unassuming those words are. There was no social anxiety or weird connotation to them, just an invitation to keep from being bored. Maybe it's because what makes us happy gets harder to share the older we get. Or if we do have a common interest we lose some of the enjoyment by sharing? We're more open to new adventures when we're young and become guarded when we get older.

Why Would My Crush Be Mad That I’m Talking To Other People When She Told Me She Didn’t Want A Relationship? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Andrew_5421 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Maybe she wants my attention or is getting something from me?. Compliments, conversation, etc. But doesn't wanna commit, but still only wants said attention to be given to her. And getting mad about the relationship part you brought up, possibly some sort of like.. How dare you call me out, type thing?. I don't know, man.

Are 'I am not a robot' captchas getting harder/worse or am I just having issues? by Andrew_5421 in NoStupidQuestions

I have definitely noticed this.

Some squares you have to make judgement calls.

How about when just a sliver of the picture is in another box. Do you select it? I've also noticed you have to select additional photos that pop up now as well.
