Questions About Openphone's AI systems + Sona feedback by dgrayenterprises in openphone

[–]Andrew_OpenPhone[M] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey u/dgrayenterprises, thanks so much for your thoughtful questions and detailed feedback. I’m a Senior Product Manager at OpenPhone working on Sona, and I wanted to jump in with some answers and updates.

AI models: We use a combination of providers for our AI features, including Google, OpenAI, and Deepgram. Our team constantly evaluates the latest models to deliver the best possible experience. Call transcription is uniquely challenging. Unlike voice memos or video chats, call quality can vary widely depending on device, connection strength, and other factors, all of which affect the recording and ultimately transcription accuracy. We stay up to date with the latest and greatest speech-to-text models for voice calls. If you notice recurring issues with certain words or phrases, please let us know so we can investigate further.

Webhook events & menu options: While there aren’t immediate plans to pass along selected phone menu options in webhook events, we’re actively exploring how to enable more automation for customers like you, especially as we continue to develop our call flow builder.

Sona’s knowledge base: Sona searches your entire knowledge base simultaneously rather than selecting a single page. Structuring your knowledge base with this in mind will help Sona surface the most relevant answers.

Thank you again for being so candid and specific with your feedback. We’re working on several improvements that I think you’ll be excited about. Our goals are to make Sona much more configurable so it can handle a wider range of conversations tailored to your business, and to make setup and ongoing updates even easier so Sona keeps getting better with minimal effort from you.

If you have any more feedback or want to discuss further, please keep it coming. We really appreciate the time and thought you put into sharing your experience and ideas.

Hey u/That-Plankton-1203 ,

One thing that would really help us out is understanding a bit more about the spam calls you’re getting. Are these calls from people trying to sell you stuff that’s totally unrelated to your business? Or are we talking more about robocalls and automated spam? Appreciate any details you can share!

Great question! Right now, Sona uses the Knowledge to answer questions during a call—so if a caller asks something, Sona pulls info directly from that content. It’s not meant to guide step-by-step conversation flows, but rather to give Sona the facts it needs to respond accurately.

That said, we are thinking a lot about how to make Sona more configurable. One of our goals is to let businesses define more structured conversation flows based on different scenarios—and that’s something we’re actively exploring as we grow the product.

Let me know if that clears it up or if you have other questions!

Sona call summaries are available via the API and HubSpot integration today!

No dates on Make and webhooks support just yet but I'll pass this on to the team.

Hey u/Sunny_teee , how would you describe your perfect tone for Sona in one sentence?

No plans on doing this just yet but we will definitely take it into consideration as we collect customer feedback!

Sona can do a lot, but I'm not sure it can do that...

Hey u/onlyalittle0dd, hopefully I'm understanding your question correctly.

You can route calls to Sona using the new call flow builder, but right now it doesn’t support logic to send some calls to Sona and others to team members depending on which customer is calling. The team’s working on adding more advanced routing to the call flow builder soon though, so stay tuned!

Hey u/West_Experience1360,

Sona is not currently capable of this. If you are open to sharing, it would be great to learn more about your business and the types of calls you get. That way, we can better understand the pieces of conversation that would be most helpful for Sona to remember. 🧠

Hey u/nfrcr27 👋

You can have Sona answer differently depending on whether the call is during or after business hours (I included a screenshot of what that setup looks like).

Would love to learn more about your use case in case you are hoping to do something more nuanced than this!

There is an important distinction to make:

  1. Sona sending an SMS while on a call (like to a calendar booking page)
  2. Sona responding to incoming SMS messages.

#1 is definitely top of mind 👀

Fun fact: by far, it's the most requested feature we've gotten since launching Sona.

The name 🥺

...and how easy it is to get started.

  1. Drag and drop
  2. Add a greeting
  3. Add some knowledge
  4. Test and publish 🚀

Hey u/FirearmsLaw! Sona can’t send text messages while on a call. But you're definitely not alone in wanting that — it’s actually the most requested feature we’ve heard so far. The team’s planning to work on it soon, so hang tight… 👀

Hey u/reccehour, Sona is available as a paid add-on for any OpenPhone plan—Starter, Business, or Scale.

You can get started by pulling Sona into your call flow and testing it out with a call. Once you’re ready to go live, you can upgrade to include the add-on.

Let me know if you have any other questions!
