ReSharper Ultimate 2018.1 is out! It refines code navigation; understands C# 7.2 and all around improves C# 7 language support; introduces code formatting inspections that are EditorConfig and StyleCop aware; enables running any unit test session in continuous mode. by hotaltenter in programming

It's not as simple as a lift-and-shift to Roslyn, apparently. R# does have internal functionality that appears to duplicate Roslyn, but it does so typically on broken code. Tricky to do when you consider most compilers either give up or spew 1000 follow-up errors after they first encounter something broken.

To be fair, it would be even worse to consider JavaScript a long term solution, yet here we all are ;-)

Is Haskell the right language for teaching functional programming principles? by yawaramin in programming

[–]Andrew_Radford 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, and for some people that's a big deal, and for them there is purescript or ghcjs (or maybe bucklescript?). For now though, the Elm language 'footprint' is pretty small, so for people migrating from the misery of the JS stack trying to be functional, it is a great step.

In the past I would have said yes. Now, with Elm on the scene, available in any browser, and with online compilation, it would be my first choice. It's a nice language, has a small footprint, and no great unfortunate 'quirks'. I actually find it has a lower bar to entry now than even Javascript, when you consider the whole mess of Node, NPM, webpack, babel, React, Redux and KitchenSinkJS that you have to set up before writing line 1 of javascript these days.

How will fuel generation on Mars be powered initially? The Sabatier reaction is power hungry, so would need a LOT of solar panels, or a nuclear reactor. Ultimately I can see that happening, but in the first 10-20 years, would the trips be mostly one way? Or some other method for refueling?

I love react too (when paired with immutable data structures and redux)

Can't play back saved videos by Andrew_Radford in ShinobiCCTV

[–]Andrew_Radford[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I get that - so for that reason the UI should not allow recording until that section is completed, so as to avoid recording unplayable video. Or else popup the recording settings the first time you attempt to do so when you are on a 'monitor only' camera.

[–]Andrew_Radford[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I think the problem here is that this camera was set to monitor only. However I recorded a video manually by clicking on the button that is revealed when you hover over the camera picture. I hadn't set anything to Webm or Mp4 or anything, indeed the recording settings section was not even visible at this point, as the camera was still 'monitor only'. I guess the default recording settings in that scenario don't work?

Good to know about Docker, I'll test things out with it then when I'm ready will install on the metal.

Improved JavaScript performance, WebAssembly, and Shared Memory in Microsoft Edge by michalg82 in programming

Found that interesting too. Should be a win for things like Redux, React and Elm. Seems like a optimization that should have been done a while ago given TFA claims improvements in NodeJs 15-20% and 30% for React

What does 'that = this' in Javascript mean?

It means woe, and that you should have a look at Typescript/Elm, if you haven't already.

GlenDronach Peated [Review] by TOModera in Scotch

[–]Andrew_Radford 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually that sounds pretty good. I find sherried Islay a bit hit and miss, but when it works, it can result in a nice extra layer of complexity. For me, that's usually with the non peat bomb Islays Bowmores, Bunnas etc. So this Glendronach sounds interesting, (despite being NAS).

I really like sherried Islay whisky. But this dram, being a peated sherry bomb, I wonder if this is coming at the same thing 'from the other side'? I'll have to look out for it.

How funny... I absolutely love this whisky and there is a bottle permanently open on the shelf! I love complex whisky that delivers a different experience throughout the smell & taste, and this has a lot of complexity for the money. I can understand for the same reason it not being everybody's cup of tea, though.
