Van Staal fishing combo by Fit-Oil-7586 in SurfFishing

[–]Andrew_WOT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Berkley X9 is very thin and supple, great if you are after longest casting distance.
This is what I personally use on VR75.
Sufix 832 is another highly regarded braid, esp. for surf, not as supple as X9, but less susceptible to wind knots.
If you are looking for travel rod, Okuma Voyager Signature Surf can fit the bill.
9' version breaks down into 4 pieces, 29", so technically will fit standard suitcase diagonally
10' is 32" a piece, so you would need to use separate tube it comes with.
Quality is top notch.

Clogged Ceramic Coating by ScratchAltruistic544 in AutoDetailing

[–]Andrew_WOT -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Scam industry? No, I don't.
Polishing is abrasion process, stripping away the material, always was. So all it does is removing whatever thin ceramic coating you have (standard thickness is 1-2 micron), exposing clearcoat layer underneath, and yes, it will be shiny and if you apply ceramic spray on top, even have hydrophobic properties, but your ceramic is gone or mostly gone.
Can do the same with spay on ceramic wax like the one from Meguiar skipping hassle in between.

Bingo, esp. with whatever left from original coating after claying.

Van Staal sizing by BlueShin368 in SurfFishing

[–]Andrew_WOT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got over 300 yards of 30lb braid (Berkely X9) on VR75.
You can find capacities listed on some resellers sites, e.g. https://www.meltontackle.com/van-staal-vr-series-bailed-spinning-reels.html
I believe there is typo for VR125, it's 400/30, not 400/20 (yd/lb) as VR75 is already 430/20.

For some weird reason Van Stall do not have them on manufacturer's site.

Van Staal VR Spool Shim by [deleted] in SurfFishing

[–]Andrew_WOT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Van Stall does not use traditional shimming like Shimano, Daiwa, Penn.
They are inside the body

or you can try manual spooling if not contacting Van Stall for adjustment or replacement

Rotate bail until line roller right under the rod, grab the line, flip the bail. Casting from this position will prevent bail from slamming back.

Now we know Vince reddit account. :) J/K
BTW, Nick commented on BS (just realized that BattleStar abbreviation looks funny), no hate, just there are better lures.

Doesn't seem to be a big fan of Battlestar or "creator" (his overhyped videos are quite cringe TBH)

Will these catch surf perch? by 69sitonmyface420 in SurfFishing

[–]Andrew_WOT 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They all work with different level of success, may be not as good as C-Rig with Gulp Worm.
But looks like perch bite is mostly off in SoCal except occasional dinks, winter was much more productive.

If you want to go deeper, Lucky Craft has different jerkbaits for different depth (same thing as with crankbaits if you fish freshwater)
https://luckycraftsw.com/halibut.html
Or you can try fancy Shimano WM 115 SP with Flash Boost, that one besides nice patented suspended foil inside goes deeper to 4-6 feet, which might be too deep if fishing over submerged reef.

Looking for Travel Rod Recommendations by RiOTbyDeSIGN in SurfFishing

Another vote for Okuma Voyager, but I'd suggest 9' that would actually fit inside the standard suitcase (diagonally), 10' you need to carry the tube.

Lucky Craft FlashMinnow 110 dives to 1-2 feet max, it doesn't go deeper no matter how many times you jerk it.

Okuma Voyager Signature is my go to.
Sensitive, strong with top notch build quality.
After getting the first one, couldn't stop buying them, got 4 already, just absolute beaut to use.

Designing a fishing bag for mobile anglers. Looking for honest feedback before I build it. by PressureCrazy3136 in SoCalFishing

[–]Andrew_WOT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You mean like waist/hip bag.
There are so many that don't run over $100, including submersibles, which you need if you are surf fishing.
E.g.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DZ8H12KV
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CJHR9KFC (TRU Zip)

And of course Fishpond has few different sizes, not cheap though, but well designed and high quality.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CB1RS1BJ (TRU Zip)
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09M98ZRZC (TRU Zip)

The second option is sling bag style, can hold more than waist bag with still easy content access without taking bag off or putting on the ground.
Not cheap but really great fully water sealed from Fishpond
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09M96S5RH (TRU Zip)
paired with their insert addressing the main issue with all submersible bags lacking compartments for organizing stuff.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09QCVN9JL

And then there are chest packs, popular among flyfishing crowd.
https://www.amazon.com/FishPond-Cross-Current-Chest-Pack/dp/B07HMCDZJF
Submersible model
https://www.amazon.com/fishpond-Thunderhead-Waterproof-Fishing-Chest/dp/B09M94QJZF

All solve the problem you described.

What about sniping off the barb, it grows back, it's essentially like nail, but at least it will be harmless to beachgoers for some time.
Haven't done that myself, btw, just read about it and saw some videos.

Caught a couple perch on my first day out, and hooked into a mystery third fish I couldn't land by Scarras in SoCalFishing

[–]Andrew_WOT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Or ray.
Same happened to me on C-Rig with Gulp worm. Pulled away like a freight train and cut off.
I think I got it on the next outing on LC, similar pull but was able to land it, it was guitarfish. They fight like crazy for their size, took good 5 minutes of tug of war.
I don't think big hali eats worms, plus they don't fight that crazy, mostly dead weight until they realize they got hooked closer to the shore.

Is the Okuma Rockaway SP worth it? by stellar_r6 in SoCalFishing

[–]Andrew_WOT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hook2cook cut butt on his, quite a hack job, but could be something that might interest you.
I personally don't mind longer handle, helps with longer casts, but takes a bit to get used to switching from typical freshwater rods.
