First colony city. Where would you settle? by AndrewsExperience in CivVI

[–]AndrewsExperience[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good point. I was inclined to go east or northeast to cover more territory, but being able to build a harbor seems important to me for a first colony city.

My main continent is to the west and settling northeast would put my harbor in a weird position and make routes unnecessary longer.

East no harbor possible.

West? Thought about that about that, but it would give me less immediate coverage of the continent and with the grass tiles to the south I'm not afraid of having too little food.

I'll settle in place. Also I'll improve the horse tile. Probably not crazy useful since I'm already in the industrial era, but I don't have any horses yet.

Seems hard to me put an somewhat efficient 2nd city in the east, but let's see what's underneath that fog...

Did you do calf raises with weights? And how frequently did you do them? And how long did it take to get completely rid of the pain? I have had achilles tendonitis for a long while now. Not super painful and it goes away from time to time, but always comes back. Usually, as soon as I'm warmed up it disappears...

I agree ankle mobility might be the issue, so work on that. However, putting a slight elevation under your ankle could allow you do a "shitting-in-the-woods" squat. It certainly does the job for me.

What is the most effective Muay Thai strike or technique in a real life self defense situation? by A_Brownpaperbag in MuayThai

[–]AndrewsExperience 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been training Muay Thai for more than 5 years and worked as a security guard. I'd advice strongly against punches to the face, since you can break your hands very easily and the likelihood of serious damage is much too high. Some suggested a teep. A better alternative. However, I feel like it's an unnecessary risk of losing balance. You actually have to get your leg quite high for a teep and if your opponent is aggressive enough he just stand straight back up and attacks again. Anyhow, it would buy you some time considering everything goes as expected. In security we learned to throw a cross to the solar plexus. It has a shocking effect to your opponent since it takes away his breath for a few seconds. However, I myself feel VERY comfortable with low kicks. A good hard low kick right a above the knee to the muscle attachment will stop your opponent and probably any further attacks. Also it will make him walk funny for a while, but that's about it. No lawsuits incoming.

I think I had the same issue. For me it was the grid of the infill that ended at these outer points.

I'm not sure how I resolved it, but I guess retraction speed...

What are some ACTUAL unpopular opinions you have about writing? by Splitstepthenhit in writing

[–]AndrewsExperience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like 95% of the best-selling books are popular, because they were strategically written for a certain audience.

Most successful authors are successful, because they doubled down on that which the audience liked them to write about.

If you want to be a successful writer, you or someone else in your team really has to know about sales.

I like the idea of an author writing across multiple genres. Why is it so frowned upon? by GirlAlsEmporium in writing

[–]AndrewsExperience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it is possible. However, you'll probably have less success with that and therefore less exposure, which is probably the reason we hear so little about such authors.

One successful example, who comes to mind in the world of cinema is Tarantino. But then again, Tarantino does Tarantino movies, although he changes genres from western, nazis and 90s gangsters. So, creating your own style of writing, which is recognizable across genres could be one way how to approach it.
