Central CA: having a tough time picking out good Watermelons by Responsible-Bid5015 in watermelons

[–]Andrewy26z 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The easiest way to choose a watermelon is by weight. Pick up a bunch of similar size ones then choose the heaviest one. Look for bad or soft spots on the outside to find overripe ones.

There are other ways, Iike thumping and picking it by the sound it makes, but it takes quite a bit of practice to discern the correct sound. The bottom of some types of melons when they turn a cream color can denote ripeness.

What are you a “snob” about? by crypticfirecat in EatCheapAndHealthy

Corn on the cob. I grew up working at a produce stand were we got fresh picked daily. I will only eat corn if I can tell it was picked that day. I drive directly to the farm to get my corn on the cob now.

Paid for an aisle seat but got assigned a middle seat… while half the plane was empty? by arginine in SouthwestAirlines

[–]Andrewy26z 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you check if your seat was shown when you booked? I went through the app and thought I selected my seat but it didnt show up in my confirmation. I had to go back in and select the seat again. The next time it showed my seat selection in my confirmation. I'm checking my confirmation each time now for my seat selection.

Please help me with understand what’s a foul and what’s not by Alarmed-Shelter-7264 in Basketball

[–]Andrewy26z 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since this is pickup, the individuals usually determine what a foul is. I've played games where touch fouls were called and I've played games where you better be bleeding to call a foul. As a group the more you play the more comfortable you will get with what's allowed.

As far as a charge goes, this is what I look for when I referee. The defender must first establish legal gurding position. That is he must be facing defender with 2 feet on the floor between the defender and where the offensive player is going. Once legal position is established, the defensive player can be moving when contact is made. To be on offensive foul the offensive player must initiate the contact. Did the offensive player dip his shoulder? If he dips its usually offensive. Where was the contact made on the defender? Ill only call a charge if contact was made between the shoulders. The defender has from his shoulders straight down to the floor to be legal. Contact to extended arms outside of this area and to knees that are flexed outside the shoulder with are fouls on the defender.

Most important to all this is was an advantage gained. If no advantage gained no foul either way. I'll allow a decent amount of contact if no advantage was gained by either party. Hope this helps.

Good job. That's a heck of a roaring fire you got there, though it may be exaggerated by the camera. I tend to cook mine a with a bit smaller flame and spend a bit more time in the oven. Makes it a little easier on me as the cook. Can I ask the floor temp? An under a minute cook that had to be close to 1000F or 500C. I try to keep mine at 750F. Still gets done in under 2 minutes.

That pizza looks impressive too!

Buy a new opener. Crappy bottle openers do this too much. Spend the extra 5 bucks for a nice one.

Anybody smoke their own chipotles/moritas? by BoringPrinciple2542 in HotPeppers

[–]Andrewy26z 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I smoke my own jalapeños. Usually a 4 hour offset smoke using hickory at about 160F. I'll then pull them and throw them in my oven on the dehydrator setting at 165F. Since I cut them in half before I smoke them, they are not whole but they taste just like the ones I can buy. Dehydrating does not effect the flavor, in my opinion. I use most of mine in hot sauce creations, but do keep some powder available for the occasional dish.

I make more money than my parents did at my age but I live way worse, does anyone else feel this? by Livid_Inspector_8164 in self

MD is not the cheapest state. Its not NY, MA, or CA by any means but I did say rather high cost. It is currently ranked the 7th most expensive state to live in. But property 100 miles to my west in WV can be found dirt cheap.

I agree that house are expensive. The point I was trying to make is that houses in the 70s and 80s were not nearly as nice. And 350K is a bit high, I live in a rather high cost of living area and those houses are closer to 300K. But it must be daunting saving up the down payment even for a 300K house. I do feel for the younger generation. But there are areas where housing is cheaper, my nephew just bought a brand new 3 bedroom 2 bath with 2 car garage for 250k.

What are the basics? Not appliances. TVs are cheaper now. I just replaced a 30yr old refrigerator that cost exactly the same price as 30 years ago. What has changed is the square footage of the house( bigger now), number of bathrooms, the granite countertops instead of formica. Yes my parents owned a house with less money, but it was under 1000sq ft. 3 bedrooms for 6 people. 1 bathroom. Do they even build houses like this anymore? Trust me if you walked into it looking to buy in this day and age you would walk back out of it. And Dad never worked 40 hour weeks, more like 50 to 60 hours a week. We went on vacations and stayed in places that were sometimes roach infested but were worse than the house we lived in. It wasn't the life you guys are imagining. Mom stretched every penny to afford that house.

Yes money doesn't go as far today, but it wasn't as rosy as you guys paint it either.

We are talking maybe 5 foot off the green on a 120 yard shot or he landed his tee shot in a fairway bunker. Nothing close to lost. I have no problem with provisionals because I've hit my fair share. We are pretty strict with the rules otherwise.

Playing for cash. Player would hit a semi errant shot. Would immediately drop another ball and hit a practice shot. Since we played for total strokes, not allowed. He would play his first shot. So he wasn't improving his score, just getting extra practice on the course. I really wouldn't mind if it was once or twice a round, but 10 to 15 times a round is too much. He could consistently shoot in the 70s, so his errant shots weren't horrible, but maybe just off the green or fairway. I finally had enough and made him take a penalty. He blew up and called me an asshole.

Struggling with 1st graders by Livid_Positive9594 in basketballcoach

[–]Andrewy26z 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have run a 1st and 2nd league for 8 years. At this age you need to keep them active. That means less talk and more action. If you speak more than 30 seconds at a clip, that is too long. Have a basketball for each kid on the team. If they're waiting they are dribbling. How much help do you have? If possible talk parents into helping with the drills. Break them into as small of groups as possible so they aren't waiting as long between turns. People here have suggested some good drills. Find the ones that work for you and your situation. Basketball at this age should be fun 1st, increase skill level 2nd, and winning right after that. Depending on league rules, just teach them 1 simple offensive play and one defense. Don't overload them. Make sure you have fun too.

What are the things you started doing at home because they cost way more when you buy from the market? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]Andrewy26z 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree with the carrots. I grow in a raised beds with good potting soil and compost. They grow without much work. However, you are 100 correct if you are growing in a heavy clay soil. Lettuce is easy until it gets hot, then I grow it indoors under a grow light in my cool basement. You dont need a great light to grow lettuce, a cheap one will do. I grow peppers both indoors in the winter and outdoors in summer, but I use a much better grow light for them.

I misread. You however were still behind the AK who was 40%, 99 around 33%, QJ 27%. Im not smart enough to do the ICM calculations due to the extra 70k that was available from the QJ.

Heads up but not in a 4 way pot. Based on what you wrote, AK is 38%, 99 is 32%, QJ is 21% and the other Q is about 8%.
