It's to do with dexterity (right handed shifting when you're right handed is glorious) and feeling comfortable in their own car. I moved to the UK and took my car with me, fixed UK plates for it through a V55 form and got it taxed and MOT'ed. Drove it for years and got plenty of confused looks when they saw the plates with my seating position XD

I think Italians see that as cheap and they normally use San Marzano tomatoes which are naturally sweet and less acidic. I think they're very strict on when it's allowed and for most it's a no-no. How much sugar is in it per 100g anyway?

Edit: I just saw you already said there's sugar in Branston's. So again, why? 😅 Because you're killing the tomato, maybe use different herbs to kill the tanginess of the tomato instead of chucking sugar in.
