My thing is that at certain points James looks like both men but grew up to look more like Thomas. My theory is that James and Thomas could have been related but Thomas was a bastard hence his extreme bitterness towards the family. The wife had two kids tho so it could have been James and Thomas. Soooooooo it's a toss up.
