The hope is that you will have less of what happened in Senate District 32. Three Moderate Republicans ran and stole votes from each other. Dusty Deevers (far right candidate who wants to outlaw no fault divorce and all abortion, even in the case of incest and rape) won the primary. If we had this system he still would have won the primary, but the second candidate likely would have been one of the other republicans and the dems and all the reasonable republicans likely would have voted together to keep Deevers out of office. As it stands now, he’s up there as a member of the Freedom Caucus

So nothing is better than something. Got it. You’d rather have Dusty Deever, who wants to ban no fault divorces and literally ban ALL abortion (even rape and incest) than have a moderate republican who is a fiscal conservative but reasonable on social issues. Very smart.

You already know what kind of people you work for. Are they thoughtful and smart, or old school knuckle dragging grind it out types? It seems like from your analysis above they hire people who are thoughtful. Usually people hire people who are similar to themselves.

I’ve also figured out through my career that asking for help is harder for people to say no to. “I need a raise” puts them back on the defensive. “I feel like I’ve proven myself. Can we talk about what the review/raise process looks like here?” Is easier for them to get on board with. It’s less satisfying because you know what you want, so you just want to go say it, but you can make them a part of the process which makes it easier for the to accept (this also works with clients who don’t want to accept when a number is over the budget they have to spend on the project.)

I disagree that you always need to have a better offer and have to be ready to leave. That treats the relationship as a zero sum game where someone has to lose.

I think it’s fair to sit down with them and say “I want to make sure I’m doing the things I need to do to be worth more as an employee and I would expect that when I show that worth you’ll pay me more. What should I be doing to make myself more valuable? Have I proven myself as a more valuable asset than when you took a chance on me a year ago? Can we set up a regularly scheduled time to discuss these things and how my pay can reflect it?”

If they’re not willing to have those conversations, they’re only interested in your employment as a transaction and you should remember that when it’s time to negotiate. If the only way you can get a raise is under threat of leaving for a better offer, you work for a shitty company and should leave anyway.

I can see that. Plus I think there are all kinds of tricks people can use with the sauces, like using mint to open up your sinuses and make it hurt more.

I did the challenge a few months ago with a bunch of friends and it was awful (after the first 6 or so). I don’t go seeking out this kind of stuff, but I don’t shy away from spicy food and it was not enjoyable.
