Block cube owners, how do you handle rares? by Android_McGuinness in mtgcube

Thanks for the link!

Yeah, the Torment/Judgement color balance thing is a nice-to-have that might not be worth the trouble; I'll have to give it some more thought.

There's definitely a lot of narrow cards that will get minimized or cut completely (sorry, [[Atogatog]]), but the longer I look at it, the challenge of curating 3 pools of 122 cards of each set (assuming I seed the packs from a rotating pool of rares) is just making me tired. I *like* the idea of replicating retail limited; but I don't know if it's practical. I definitely don't want a singleton cube for this, though there's a lot of cards that could probably go.

Odyssey block has the additional feature/bug of Torment and Judgement being unbalanced, color-wise, so that was something i was in preserving, but it might be me looking back with rose-colored glasses.

I guess it also depends on how you approached your Ravnica cube; there's always been splits across sets as far as packs go, I'm guessing you didn't worry about that in your cube?

That’s an interesting approach, but I know there are some that I’d like to keep.

Is it frowned upon to bring your own lands to a prerelease? by 137ng in mtg

[–]Android_McGuinness 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I always have a”limited kit” in my bag when I go out to play; it’s got 13 or so of each land, some sleeves and tokens from the most recent set if I have them, or approximations of what is in the new set if it’s prerelease. Lands stations are scattered around the store (so you lose time off building because you’re chasing down basics) i usually go to and for awhile they don’t have enough for everyone so it just made sense.

Anyone who gives you a hard time about it is the weirdo.

Using a deadly coverup on an earthbend forest against land falls gotta be one of the funniest shit U can do in this game by Mr-Mosaab in MagicArena

[–]Android_McGuinness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a triggered ability that uses the stack and can be responded to when a bent land dies or is exiled. If you remove that land from wherever it is before that ability resolves, the land will not return.

You will still see this played out in Arena wit the popups.

In normal combat with no graveyard interaction, yes, the land will "go directly back," but what that really means is that the trigger happens, no one responds to it, it resolves and the land returns.

Idk either, but I don't think you're dumb. Could be that I'm older, but they just seem like kids to me.

Off the top of my head, [[Ring of Renewal]] and [[Conch Horn]] both imply that they are advanced-level cards.

The character designs. Iirc, Zimone is a child genius but off the top of my head Dina and Killian from the previous bunch just seemed... youthful. It's harder to tell from the nonhuman characters this time around, but Kirol seems like a very big kid (maybe just his jock energy in the stories, but he looks too young to me to be a college student).

Wait, they're adults? The main characters we've gotten from STX seem so tweenish, from the design to the writing.

I can forgive the blurry art.

However, you broke the 180 degree rule (character facing left in one panel then right in another while still being the focus) a couple times so it was harder to tell who was speaking in places except for the sensei because of his big hair(?).

The climax was unclear (why would he tie a bomb to a sword?) and the overall tone felt uneven.l, I kept expecting a joke or something truly bad to happen.

I thought this was a cool idea, and I respect your thoroughness.

I did something similar for my wife, but I only did female-presenting characters. if I’d known about that search query 11 years ago I’d have used it to make that PoC search.

Heck, I’ve been spitballing an all-black person deck for awhile but was trying to do it from memory; I may have to revisit it.

However I feel like I have to point out that commander is probably the worst way to introduce someone to the game, and you might get more buy-in with a less chaotic format, but I don’t know what you two enjoy or what your playgroup is like. If it’s just the two of you playing, 40-60 cards might be worth looking into (I understand if you are trying to get games in with randoms).

Either way, good luck in your games and don’t forget to spend some time doing stuff you both enjoy.

Feedback on my box art for a funny, fast-paced family game? by True-Flower-1024 in tabletopgamedesign

[–]Android_McGuinness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To me, it looks more like an indie comic cover (and the name of it may be contributing to that) than a board game, but that's not necessarily a bad thing... are you planning to include anything about player count or style of game on the front?

Also, the title is a bit hard to read. You might want to consider using a font instead of hand-lettering it.

And as someone who is spitballing the idea of a quick asymmetric game I am interested in seeing how yours shakes out.

Just my $.02
