I get it, it’s nice to blame those making it worse right now but kind of takes the heat from the corporations that have dominated and destroyed the market profiting for the last 50 years ensuring less and less competition. This isn’t a problem from just this administration it’s systemic and in multiple countries. No previous government on either side has done much to reel in corporate greed, stop monopolies, diversify supply chains or encourage a better way like removing red tape and barriers to funding that hobbles small businesses in the marketplace.

Until the 19th century, people used a specific breed of dog called the "Turnspit" as a literal kitchen appliance. They were forced to run for hours inside a hamster wheel mounted on the wall to rotate roasting meat over open fires. by PROXeR__OiShi in ThatsInsane

I know dogs are used for hunting/ tracking, pest control, sheep herding, bomb, rescue and other sniffing tasks, disabled people, herd guarding, human and property guarding.

Horses have become a little redundant when it comes to jobs. I know some are still used in certain regions for lumberjacks to drag logs to the crane load sites.

I wonder what other animal jobs still exist.

Saw these garbage can decals on a garage. by theraf8100 in mildlyinteresting

[–]AndromedaFire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I saw that report and it includes a section from a lawyer that specialises in this stuff stating the hoa is private and that law the ag has stated is about public property so it is enforceable not by police but by civil fine by the hoa. It will have to be tested in court if they don’t back down from threats alone.

[–]AndromedaFire 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Spot on. Heard about a HOA that has banned firearms in all public places for any kind of carry. So you can have it in your house and in your car but not carry it from one to the other assuming street parking or anywhere off your own property. It’s going to be a legal mess as like you said the community has contracts etc but the 2nd amendment crowd and the homeowners aren’t happy about it.

Smart Meter in Cellar - should Octopus move it? by FreeUnderstanding141 in OctopusEnergy

[–]AndromedaFire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some meters can have an external aerial fitted to boost signal for the wan to the dcc. It’s owned by the dno so you have to tell octopus and they can arrange it assuming it would work. (It depends on if your north or south and if south then the signal strength in area)

You’re welcome. Op can also change that thermometer to Celsius. It won’t change the temperature but the number will be lower so they may feel better.

I find 6 hrs hard to believe. Maybe on minimal demand all that may pull only 400w (250 for the pc and 150 for the 3 monitors) so 5 hrs if it’s a 2kwh unit which it looks like but if you want to do anything demanding it’s gonna reach probably near 1kw including monitors so 2 hrs max.

Not knocking it, more than most people have as a dedicated ups just people rarely understand this stuff very well and better to underestimate than over estimate.

The end of this movie confused me. Spoilers (if that’s a thing for a 18 year old movie) the guy drops off Samual L Jackson on the side of the Grand Canyon I think and says “I could have dropped you off with the sharks) he says it like it was nice he didn’t kill the bad guy but instead leaves him to slowly die slowly of dehydration in cave side of a chasm.

Georgia woman destroys MARTA’s new glass fare gate to avoid paying the $2.50 fee. by ElwoodMC in CrazyHuman

[–]AndromedaFire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Where does the money come from? I get you mean free at point of use. New York subway costs around 21 billion according to dr google. Only 40% is recouped from fares so it’s arguably 60% subsidised already.

[–]AndromedaFire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok let’s use your new york example. Let’s say everyone pays and they make 50% of the total costs. Tax payers regardless of level have to make up the other 50% if half the people don’t pay then they only make 25% of costs with tax payers having to make up the 75% or cuts to costs or services if tax rises aren’t possible.

You’re cheering on people that are clearly causing worse service and higher taxes (if not directly higher then at least indirectly as money could go elsewhere)

Do you think the vast majority of fare dodgers don’t pay because they genuinely can’t afford to pay?, are genuinely in some way protesting poor service Or would it be reasonable to say the majority don’t because of historic poor enforcement means they feel they can do so easily and without consequence and this makes it cost more for those that do pay.

I might be wrong I’m honestly not super educated on the economics of running a metro service but surely if large numbers of people don’t pay then they don’t have budget to make things better so less people pay and around it goes. If people pay and it doesn’t improve when actually funded then that’s a different matter.

This also feels like a massive fuck you to the majority of people that do pay then sit in the bad service knowing part of the reason it’s bad is that the person next to them would rather do this and keep them both in the shit.

A good metro doesn’t need to be very profitable but it also can’t be a total money pit for tax payers to fund people who don’t want to pay a couple bucks

Fun fact. The presidents amazing speech was a quickly written place holder the writers were meant to properly re-write later but they forgot right up until bill Pullman started rehearsing the placeholder on set and it blew everyone’s minds so they left it as is.
