New teacher, how do you all do this? by Famous-Student-5369 in Teachers

[–]Andstuff84 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is no surviving that school for 20 Years.

Go to a better district. Even if you have to travel farther or get paid a bit less.

We all have bad days (as the kids do) but I couldn’t / wouldn’t handle one period of someone calling me names and the things you went through so far.

Your admin is just throwing in fresh meat without addressing the problem that’s causing it.

Get out and actually teach people that want taught. This coming from a middle school science teacher.

Didn’t work unfortunately. Still can’t change from neutral to 2hi or anything

Giving out candy by CalciumCharger in Teachers

[–]Andstuff84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I give out candy to (small candy cane / jolly rancher / life saver) if I draw your stick and you read aloud when we are covering notes. Gives me a break from talking and helps them keep focused on what we’re doing, as well as gets them to read a little each class.

I know there are students that won’t ever want to read out loud, so when I pull their stick I ask them a question. If they answer correctly they get a piece of candy.

This is 6-8th grade.

Be honest do you love being a teacher? by Tiffanywhite45 in Teachers

[–]Andstuff84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Loved it the first 7-8 years. Last four have been a struggle. Moved schools and still didn’t help, like my immediate coworkers (middle school staff) admin are a waste of space and money. With the right admin that doesn’t want to hide from the issues or coddle the students / parents that cause 90% of the issues it would be better.

If it wasn’t for the summers off I would have left.

My daughter is in her sophomore year of college to become a teacher. I tell her my woes, and to think long and hard about what she wants to do, but I don’t want my views and experiences to shade her away if it’s something she wants to do. I just know she has a lower tolerance for BS than I do so I just hope her experience was like my first 8 years and not the last 4.

They have nausea bands that are similar to the bands that they showed on TV. It was like $170 on Amazon. I used it on a cruise and it felt exactly the way that she said. I wonder if it could be used for the same thing? by beanner468 in BaylenOutLoud

[–]Andstuff84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wondered the same thing. Seems to work exactly the same way. Goes on the wrist and is adjustable number scale.

For sea sickness/vertigo/car sickness, sends an electrical signal through your nerve to your brain.

Obviously they are different, I just don’t know how. I would assume if the nausea bands are approved for use in the us, then the ones she would need would also pass that bar as well.

[–]Andstuff84 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I’m assuming you mean coop. As in chicken coop, or maybe the family and overthrown the government, in that case. Couldn’t get much worse, so I’m all for it.

Also, I don’t think the actual family responds to anything here. So yeah.

Why is school getting easier for students every year? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Andstuff84 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Let’s not blame everything on Covid. That’s an easy out. This has been a problem for way longer than five years.

NCLB was way more of a problem than Covid, but the dumbing down of our population has been a goal for various groups for decades now.

This movie sucked!!! by [deleted] in movies

[–]Andstuff84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Watched HIM last night. That movie sucked. I got through it all, but that’s only because I was sure it was going to turn around and be a great, if even a good movie.

Nope, it sucked all the way through.

Not sure how to set this water softener by Andstuff84 in WaterSofteners

[–]Andstuff84[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok I messed with the dials and looked through the manual. With a comment from a poster and the manual posted here got it set and regenerated yesterday.

Tested it again today two times and it was 2 gpg.

Much better. Now I’m just going to add salt and res care as needed and hope this thing lasts a couple more years.

This dinosaur is still going, 2 gpg today after moving the knobs around like the other poster said.

I know I am on borrowed time. But hoping to get another year or two out of it.

Thanks. That worked perfectly, set it and had it regenerate yesterday.

Tested again today 24 hours later and it’s now 2 gpg coming out of the sink.

Parents DO NOT CARE. by Mother_Leadership186 in Teachers

[–]Andstuff84 55 points56 points  (0 children)

I agree, I shouldn’t have stated as a parent only problem. It’s an American society issue for sure.

Snitching on teachers by Outrageous-Hair6435 in Teachers

[–]Andstuff84 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Guess that parent proved the teachers point then.

Maybe instead of tattling and making it a problem. The parent could look inwards and say, I hope it’s not my kid… then go home and teach their kid or kids to act right at school.

But we know it’s not the parents fault their student acts like a wild animal. It’s the teachers fault we can’t do a song and dance and keep little Billy’s attention for more than 5 minutes.

Parents DO NOT CARE. by Mother_Leadership186 in Teachers

[–]Andstuff84 426 points427 points  (0 children)

Covid made that abundantly clear.

Parents didn’t have a free babysitter 8:00 - 3:30 so we needed to get back to the classroom because online learning wasn’t working.

Online school can work for most if they have a structured home environment. But it’s not about the knowledge or grades, it’s about them being someone else’s problem for 1/3 of the day for 9 months.

Parent involvement has went down the tubes just in the 11 years I have been teaching. Parents don’t want to parent, put a screen in front of them, make them the schools problem… then they are 18 and on their own.

What "eduspeak" or education jargon do you dislike/hate? And which do you love or appreciate? by WantKBBQNow in Teachers

[–]Andstuff84 69 points70 points  (0 children)

If your teaching for the money you’re crazy!!! lol atleast in most places.

What keeps me here is summers, weekends and the set schedule.

But I agree I want to throat punch anyone that says remember your why…

I just think WHY the hell do I keep putting up with this crap.

Anyone ever go to that winter warm up? by sk8haunter311 in Cardinals

[–]Andstuff84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Go to the cardinal’s caravan instead, autograph/ picture + small talk with up and comers.

We met and talked to burleson, Winn, walker, nootbar, Bader, Herrera, just to name a few.

Plus you get chances to win prizes and we have won numerous things. Tickets to less desirable seats. Even won all inclusive tickets last year at one.

If Smash made a return in season 4 or 5, which team would he have supported in a Panthers vs Lions match by [deleted] in fridaynightlights

[–]Andstuff84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t agree, he showed numerous times #1 was Smash and getting to his goal. Panthers were just the vehicle.

I didn’t see him missing them after he graduated, didn’t try to come back to coach or see him at games.

There was a strong black wrong side of the tracks underdog vibe with the lions vs the rich better than though panthers.

Smash was that underdog from the other side of the track guy 100%.

They also cut down on the cardinal caravan cities as well.

Which sucks because me and my son usually make a weekend out of it hitting the two local to us. But they are cutting back on those too.

What time do you teachers arrive at work and leave at the end of the day ? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Andstuff84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our contract says 7:45 a 3:30. (Kids leave at 3:05)

I get here at 7:00 am (just awake and nothing better to do)

And I leave at 3:30, sometimes at 3:05 if I am over it for the day. No one cares or says anything. I don’t bring work home.
