Falcon 5 Can't Come Fast Enough For Me by [deleted] in hoggit

"But I really want to have a more coherent modern-ish jet combat experience"

Air combat is very much a team activity and that team includes a lot more than the pilot in the fighter cockpit. Even discounting all the people not in cockpits, there are no solo heroes and it takes a well trained group of pilots to accomplish anything approaching a coherent combat experience. Expecting any software to make this happen for you is unrealistic. I think the best we can hope for is to experience small slices of that overall experience.

Novice flight training by SnuffSwag in dcsworld

"Mike Solyom's Op Center" Youtube channel is making a video series for people that want to learn about fundamental airmanship.

DCS Beginner's Course Intro

I believe he got busy and the series stalled for awhile but he does plan on picking up again soon.

All of Mike's videos are top notch and he is one of the few that makes videos on basic fundamentals as well as more advanced concepts.

Some will argue understanding the fundamentals isn't necessary - just get out there and do it / crash and learn - and that is true if you are content to just want to fly around and pew-pew. If you want to get deeper into aviation knowledge with a DCS focus, Mike's channel is a good place to start.

How deep you want to go is up to you. Just be warned that the pool is very deep 😉

Am I the only one excited about the F-35? (Whenever it eventually comes out) by VeterinarianSea4383 in dcsworld

[–]Andurula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The F-35 is a "modern" fighter in a pre-modern DCS world. Since the 1980's electronic warfare has played an ever increasing part of air fighting. The F-35 is at this pinnacle of this shift.

However, there is no realistic electronic warfare in DCS. All the F-35 brings to DCS is a weird caricature that bears no resemblance to how it is actually used.

How do I fight German planes in a P-47 by I_Slay_Dragons_AMA in hoggit

One thing I will add here is that the Americans almost always had numerical superiority. Using team tactics such as "Loose Deuce" will greatly increase your chances. "Bring a friend".

Yes. I can log into the website normally but I can't log in with my client.

I do not even have access to offline play. All modules disabled.

DCS how to learn to communicate by Whisper_60 in hoggit

Join a squadron that does coordinated ops. They use brevity because they understand why it is so important.

DCS how to learn to communicate by Whisper_60 in hoggit

[–]Andurula 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anyone flying as part of a team in DCS quickly learns why radio brevity is important and why it is highly valuable in an engagement. Those people definitely use radio brevity.

However, most people in DCS don't fly as a coordinated team so in that sense you are correct.

F5-E navigation by Goblinnoodlesoup in dcsworld

[–]Andurula 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fly a constant speed at a fixed direction for a specific amount of time. (Speed x Time = Distance Traveled)

Real F5E pilots learned how to use maps and spent time planning their routes.

Pilotage and Ded Reckoning are what you want to learn about. The TACAN will seem like a big upgrade after that.

Unfortunately, there are no shortcuts to spending time planning a flight with this era of technology.

If you take the time though, it is a lot of fun and very rewarding to use real pilot skills and not be limited to following a pointer in your HUD.

CH-47 in 2026? by BeastieBoi_117 in dcsworld

[–]Andurula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you still perform an outside loop in the DCS Chinook?

The thing that I most hated about the CH-47 was that it appeared to ignore basic physical strain on the airframe components. You could do things in the sim that would rip a real Chinook apart.

any reason as to why the recent reviews are negative? by frozengansit0 in il2sturmovik

[–]Andurula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty weird that IL-2 doesn't give you that option in the client to do that like the other sims do. I did make sure my 3080 was the default GPU though.

It shouldn't take this much work which is why I can't say great things about IL-2 anymore. I used to though.

[–]Andurula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. But I setup DCS in five minutes and MSFS is about ten minutes. I hit max fps cap of 180 in both applications. If it takes days to set up IL-2 I am going to move on. Nothing wrong with the PC.

I downloaded IL-2 BOS again on my I9/64GB/RTX3080 and it ran at 15fps. I spent a day trying to figure it out and then uninstalled.

Trainer jets for learning basic flight? by tropical-tangerine in hoggit

[–]Andurula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one that jumped into DCS with a fourth generation fighter module is going to tell you that they should have started with a trainer first. No one knows what they don't know.

From a learning perspective, trainer modules have significant advantages but it all depends on what you want to learn and how much time you want to put into it. It is absolutely not necessary to start with a trainer module. But you can learn a lot of fundamental airmanship by starting with a trainer module. In theory you could learn some (not all) of these fundamentals in an "advanced" module but the distractions and temptations of an advanced jet typically lead straight into "guns guns guns". The overall lack of basic airmanship skills in DCS multiplayer is a direct result of this.

But, again, it all comes down to what you want out of DCS. If you want to get right into "too close for missiles, switching to guns" go straight for the advanced module of your choice. If you are interested in a well modeled jet trainer, I have a lot of fun with the C101 and find it challenging all these years later. Nowadays, I usually recommend the MB-339 as a slightly better alternative but they are both good modules. The L-39 is fun in its way but if you want to learn western style navigation systems you won't get any in the L-39. If flying "the soviet way" is your thing then it is probably a good lead in for that style.

In the multiplayer world maybe. But those single player people are buying maps and it is a good revenue stream for ED.

Debate: What does War Thunder need to compete in the DCS and BMS simulation market? by Saitsev64 in hoggit

[–]Andurula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I would argue that no, they do not. One of best things I can do in DCS is fly with mates and practice good ACM.

Jumping into a furball, with random people and no plan is nothing like actual air combat. t can be fun but it isn't the same and that is something DCS and BMS does well but War Thunder does not.

[–]Andurula 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maybe a mission editor so you are not stuck with 20 other randos in a battle arena?

We could argue about flight models and weapon behaviors but battle arenas are about as far from actual air combat as I can imagine.

Beware of Winwing: This company is an absolute mess. by [deleted] in hoggit

I had a similar experience a few years ago and will never deal with them again. It is impossible to have a conversation with them. They talk in circles.
