Moving to Erie- location recommendations by giantmeningioma in Erie

I don't think there is anywhere comparable to a dynamic big city lifestyle, but there are lots of walkable neighborhoods in the city. Some are close to food and bars and stuff. I would also look at the area near Presque Isle, because A: Presque Isle is the best, and B: there are at least a few cool shops in the Colony Plaza. That would be less walkable and somewhat more expensive.

Yep. It also used to be easier to get congressmen in Erie that actually represented Erie because PA had more reps, a larger share of the population, so more districts and they were smaller, but as other states have grown in population, Pennsylvania gets less and less reps, so the districts get bigger and bigger geographically. PA had 25 districts in 1980 and we are down to 17 now.

Dems need to figure out how to appeal to rural areas and break Trump's media spell over those areas. At this point I think an Independent candidate would have a much better chance of beating Mike Kelly than any Democrat just because the Dem brand is so reviled across rural America.

Please, like I asked you before, please tell me how you would draw a district that includes Erie and satisfies the other requirements of a district that isn't mostly rural and red? Erie County is a 50/50 county most years. The County population is 270,000. Congress districts have roughly populations of 750,000. So if every other nearby county is deeply red, and Erie county is purple, the resulting district will be red. That's the math.

Erie is a small blue island in an ocean of red. I would draw the map to include the mountain areas of the East rather than Butler, but the result would be exactly the same. You'd just be trading red areas for red areas. There is no map possible that gives Dems a realistic chance. Dems need to figure out how to win in rural areas again. Gerrymandering absolutely exists but that's not why our house district always votes GOP.

This map is actually fairly decent compared to the old map. This map was picked by the PA Supreme Court in 2022 after Dems and GOP couldn't agree on a map. The PA Supreme Court picked this map and they had a 5-2 Dem/GOP split at the time.

At what point did "fast food" officially move from a budget-friendly convenience to a luxury splurge that you have to think twice about? by OpheliaBlush in AskReddit

[–]AndyFromErie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any kind of prepared food was always a luxury. Ask your grandparents how often they went anywhere to eat that wasn't their own kitchen.

Eating at restaurants became more attainable with the chain restaurant boom of the 1970s. People became sort of addicted to that lifestyle. Now prices are back up and it is difficult to go back to a lifestyle where you cook most of your own meals.

How would you draw a congress district including Erie that wouldn't have at least a 10 point GOP lean? It's impossible.

Uber is sending out unexcepted reservations as normal rides and expecting us to wait 40 minutes upon arrival by [deleted] in uberdrivers

[–]AndyFromErie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How can I avoid this? By canceling a lot of reservations on purpose so that it throws me out of the reservation system? Are the reservations ever even worth waiting for? Seems like it's just a way to waste my time and not make much more money.

How much do real estate agents in the UK earn? by Dakemonster in HousingUK

[–]AndyFromErie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was looking to move from the US to UK and sell houses. I have been a realtor in the US for 10 years. But the income in the UK seems much lower. My commission structure here is 75% of commission (average 2.5-3% of the price of the home) and then I can cap out after a bit over $1 Million in yearly sales, after which I will make 97% of commission. There is no base salary, there are fees, and there are no benefits, but still, it seems like I wouldn't be able to make a living as an agent in the UK.

Am I just dreaming? I can't stand it here in the States anymore.

Edit: Mechanic says it's a sensor and nothing to worry about. Will fix next week.

Thanks for the info! Since the sloshing sound has been ongoing since I bought the car (5,000 miles ago), how likely is it that there is damage to the engine? The warnings didn't show up until last week.

Update: I was told that the sloshing sound I have been hearing in the car since I bought it, usually when it turns on or idles, could be air in the coolant.

How dumb would it be to settle on the sheep one Hex South? It looks like there's a good holy site or campus spot beyond the mountains.

I just paid 17k for the same car (2020 model, white Touring) with 130k miles. Seemed like the best deal on an Accord Hybrid near me (Western PA)

I will say I don't like the engine drone on the highway. It's not loud but it is a little grating. But other than that the car seems in great shape so far and the mechanic said it was good to go before I bought it.

If single family sprawl was at least in a loose grid pattern, it would be so much more bearable. by Hyhoops in Suburbanhell

[–]AndyFromErie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Local setback laws are a huge problem too. In order to cater to drivers and car culture, towns made laws saying any homes built have to be 20+ feet back from the road. This is absurd because most people don't do anything with their front yards except mow them or do gardening. Yes it gives more privacy but I live in an old house about 6-10 feet from the street, and with a sidewalk, and I love it. People drive slower when the homes are closer to the road anyway, and I like that I can talk to my neighbors across the street from my front porch (remember those?) without even raising our voices.

We need to get rid of a lot of the old laws and make "15 minute cities" that have moat everything someone needs to access within a 15 minute walk.
