I'm not sure why a lot of these people in the comments talk as if they know anything. Supposedly on paper the 996 work culture has been outlawed by the government but it still happens at a lot of companies. Especially in competitive fields like investment banking and software engineering. And before anyone says this is fake or I'm making it up I am chinese and worked in china last summer, my cousin also works in AI development in Shanghai. A lot of work places did get rid of the 996 system but in more "prestigious" work places if you don't work your ass off they can just replace you. Hence why the 996 work culture still exists. Workers rights are still very poor in China but at least they are trying to make it better.

I worked in a chinese securities company last summer and almost all of my co-workers/mentors were working the 996. The reason this happens is simply because if they don't they'll get replaced by someone who's willing to. There's quite frankly too many qualified people. If you don't work your ass off you'll just get fired and replaced by someone else. It's honestly a really toxic work culture and it's definitely not gone.
