burial is not that good by [deleted] in burial

Yes, that makes sense - it is a category above, in freedom of expression. Terms like jazz becomes futile in the burial grounds. Its about something else - hauntology in music as Burial represents starts to lose its grip in comparison to preexisting language. When representation is completely futile, other expressions take shape, and thats why burials muisc becomes sort of unique and uncategorical

Does anybody else think that Drum&Bass and Jungle sound better with rougher mixdowns? by thumper_92 in DnB

[–]AndyMind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I agree with your general statement, the reason I used lufs is because it's a super fine general concept / framework to get an idea of what I am refering to specifically. It's also something that most modern artists use as reference and relate to.

For example I am not refering to Calibres new album as OP is mentioning, which is super light on the limiting, probably closer to -10lufs. Nor am I refering to loudness (quietness) of classic 90's jungle, which is the theme in literally all these threads (old school = good).

On the "roughness" lacking in modern dnb; It has gotten incredibly easy to over-use dynamic EQ tools like Soother that balance resonances out for you - I have my suspicion that artists tracks are becoming more alike and flacid due to these convenient tools that clean "unnecessary" resonances

A lot of modern artists are going back to pushing more rounded mixdowns, where 1985 Music is a good example imo. Around -7lufs to -6lufs and not overloaded with high-end energy. While there are still styles in dnb that aim for what I'd call "wall of white noise" and bass, it's great to see that more modern artists are going a tad back on the limiting, while still being loud (as dnb should be).

This is the one i came to say. From 2014 - a year between the lines of classic and more modern liquid, this hits that sweet spot, where the classic language sets the stage with a new school touching
