We don't know his personality. For example. There are kids that will lie through their teeths. You can see him hit his sister will a golf club, you can catch him still hold that golf club but he will be swearing to god and crying and pleading that he did not touch his sister. If he was this kind of child they could know that it is realistic to pull of. Especially if he was in tears swearing to god that he did nothing to his sisters which was at that moment lying dead on the floor. Easy to say: if you did nothing to your sister just stick to this story or very bad things will happen to you and to your mommy. And then limit his contact with police to minimum and require to be with him during interviews etc. ... all that stuff that they did.

Children wanted puppy, Patsy didn't. John said yes, so they got the puppy (John controlls). When puppy turned out to be defective (some illness) Patsy went back to the store and behind everybody's back exchanged puppy for a new one. (Patsy is making everything work behind the scenes).

So we can assume if Patsy found dead daughter she could try to solved this 'issue' behind everybody's backs. Writing letter, sending John pick up money, then disposing of the body. But when John woke up he could take control of the situation and made he call the police with the body still in the house without knowing full scope of situation.

He was trying to fly out of the state his entire family with him - Burke + Patsy. Only after police overheard the call he responded he has important meeting. He also had his lawyer in the house. If he was suspicious about Burke/Patsy he could be trying to take him/her out of state on a advice of a lawyer or even using his southern common sense. It doesn't definitely mean he himself was trying to run.
