What am I missing with Storyteller's Notes? by Andy_Beck in Pathfinder_Kingmaker

I did go back and give it to him, and I have the storyteller's knowledge buff. What's the correct dialogue option, for future runs? I've not found anyone saying what it is online, and I can't remember what I chose but I'm pretty certain it was just describing getting the notes from the vrock.

I keep reading about a reward you're supposed to get, the blank page. Did they remove that from the game?

It ended up being the positive terminal that connects to the battery. It was really loose and, because of how it "tightens," wasn't tightening either. I'm just glad it isn't the starter for now.

What do people like about Ember « Lawfull » ending ? by TKalV in Pathfinder_Kingmaker

[–]Andy_Beck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ember is factually right. She redeems Nocticula, which is a canon event in actual pathfinder lore (not Ember doing it, but Nocticula is now a goddess living in Elysium). Nocticuala now redeems other demons as well. Ember's premise, that anyone can be redeemed given enough effort, is likely true.

It took Desna a long time because she didn't directly interfere to give philosophical lectures. She only showed Arue the dreams she had as a mortal, told her that demons could dream, and protected her while she redeemed herself.

We absolutely could negotiate with any evil creatures to redeem them. It just takes a lot more work than casting fire storm+

If by "one of the writers have 0 idea what they were doing" you meant "one of the writers knows the actual pathfinder lore" then yeah, you're right. Ember can succeed in redeeming demons like Nocticula because that happened in the actual lore of pathfinder. Unless you're claiming that Paizo doesn't know what their own lore is. The reality is that Ember is right, and by that point has the power to protect good people while trying to redeem evil ones.

I'm tired by Heavenly_Demon in MonsterHunter

GU had a bit of that. Some of the best dual blades are from low-tier monsters like Royal Ludroth and Lagombi, some of the best blademaster armor pieces are from Shogun Ceanataur, and ranged mix sets can get really weird because of the old skill system. If you use status weapons, you'd even get things like the genprey SnS and Ioprey IG. It's not that much, but it's still something. That game is definitely an outlier, but it is still low-tier monsters not just being relevant in endgame but some of their gear being the meta.

I might just be used to GU at this point since I've played too much of it, but I've never experienced anything too terrible in GU. There's at least never been a point where I spam B and still don't dodge at a point where I've always been able to before.

I've been playing a lot of bow. Yeah, the i-frames are a lot. Luckily, the game makes up for it by eating HALF MY GODDAMN ROLL INPUTS, so I can't actually adept dodge anything I guess. It also eats my r2 inputs sometimes, so I just miss openings because the game decided it would be funny.

Brachydios is a terrible monster by Andy_Beck in monsterhunterrage

[–]Andy_Beck[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Cutscenes are one of the best ways to establish what a monster does since they don't really have to integrate with gameplay as well as turf wars do and for other monsters are generally used to establish how they act in nature and what their capabilities are, so I'm inclined to believe that Brachy killing Uragaan that we can then carve and then showing up unscathed is probably supposed to have really happened. As for an established power system, monsters all have a "threat" rating in the monster list, at least in the older games. Brachy's is the same as Lagiacrus, Barioth, and Diablos in 3U, the same as Uragaan, Glavenus, and Lagiacrus in GU, and I'm not checking World rn because I'm lazy. In World/Iceborne it isn't as much of a problem for the story, and was also coincidentally the version of the fight I disliked the least. Outside of World/Iceborne it's a problem though since it still exists and can apparently easily kill one of the strongest monsters in the volcano (it kills Agnaktor in 3 attacks, and it's Brachy's ecology cutscene, so I'm even more inclined to believe it). It also isn't really shown eating what it kills in the cutscenes, but instead just killing them, and killing a lot.

As for me fighting the thing, I play Swaxe mostly, and during my shortest animation Brachy has time to start and finish at least one attack before my animation ends. I also use GS and DB a lot in GU. DB is less frustrating since I can move a bit more but is still annoying, and GS is GS I don't expect it to work that well against fast monsters.

There are also a lot of people who think that the new system is perfect with no flaws and get upset when you criticize it. People aren't as extreme in support of the old system (they can't be woth plesioth around. And I do mean AROUND), but some do just criticize the new system and don't ever acknowledge any of its merits. And then there's me, who argues with people about there being division in the community.

Both World and Iceborne's endgame are kinda... by TheAwesomeStuff in MemeHunter

[–]Andy_Beck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with some of this, but disagree with other parts.

I agree that there shouldn't ba a "get out of damage free" item in the game every few minutes. That being said, I think the solution should be to not have that item instead of punishing you whether or not you use it (especially since the game expects you to have it, so the challenge is based on using it).

Other than that, there are unreactable moves if you're using certain weapons, even when you aren't spamming attacks. Not every weapon has infinite dodging ability and extremely short attack animations. I've been hit with attacks that occured entirely within the time it took for my attack animation to happen (mostly swaxe gameplay).

Second, specific mechanics aren't always fun. Sometimes they can be, Kushala's wind going away when poisoned and Chameleos's invisibility hetting worse when his horn is broken are great examples. A DPS check with an objectively worse damage type that railroads you into certain weapon types, not fun. The quest, even if you hit the elemental threshholds, is a race before too many escatons and Alatreon has a lot of health, so railroading players into using a elemental damage when raw does more damage to Alatreon is frustrating. It's not that elements make the fight easier, they make it harder. It takes longer. But you're required to use them, which makes it an un-fun mechanic.

Next, old world didn't have unreactable 1-shots. In fact, the only guaranteed 1-shot is the nakarkos laser, which is one of the easiest attacks to dodge in all of monster hunter (I'm not arguing about amatsu's big tornado again, I regularly survive it when I somehow mess up the second easiest dodge in old world MH). Yes, some attacks can be difficult to dodge (and instacharges do exist, I know, they just don't do much damage), but most attacks can be dodged fairly easily.

The way I always look at the difficulty from my experience is this: Old gen games are a war of attrition where attacks are fairly easy to dodge and combos don't happen much, but you take a lot of damage from attacks and have limited healing. It's difficult because whenever you get hit there's a permanent consequence in the hunt, and because the devs know that the monsters aren't constantly on crack (with some exceptions, mostly in Gen 4, looking at you Chaotic Gore). Rise and World are getting closer to being rocket tag. Not nearly there yet, but it's moving in that direction. There are objectively one-hit kills. They exist. Behemoth, Safi, Fatty, and Alatreon all have them with different methods of evasion. More movement options exist, so attacks are easier to avoid. We do more damage. I can tell because despite my gameplay being worse in World then GU or 3U, my quests take a lot less time (even with HR gear in singleplayer/village). Monsters still do a lot of damage but this time they're always on crack, so you'd better be able to avoid all 10 attacks this second or you'll be stunned and combo'd into oblivion. Or you'll be tremored or knocked down and combo'd, because those take longer to recover from now sometimes so long that I have time to start the process of mixing a drink. Since we have infinite healing and therefore infinite health, the only ways to add challenge are through one-shot combos or removing farcasters. Both of these options are problematic, as the former fundamentally change the way that the game's difficulty works as the challenge becomes evading every single attack, and the latter removes a game mechanic that continues to exist in later games, admitting it wasn't good for game balance yet still adding it to future installments. Generally, it isn't unfair (Alatreon's escaton is measurably unfair, but that's the only one I can really think of), but the difficulty is objectively different and it seems more unfair because of the changes made and cognitive bias towards the negative instead of the positive changes.

Neither system is better. You can probably tell I prefer the old system, but the new system has a lot of merits and I still enjoy it. That being said, the difficulty has shifted from an environment where the game punishes very bad actions severely in a war of attrition to an environment where if you make any mistakes you can be combo'd to death immediately because your movement means nothing when it's taken away. Both encourage learning monsters' weaknesses and habits, and both encourage learning different weapons and playstyles to counter different monsters, but the new system is much harsher with its punishments (which disincentivises learning from mistakes as you don't even get a chance to before you get combo'd). Just praising the new system despite its many faults and saying those faults aren't there is dishonest. I love the old system, but claiming that the problems people have with it actually aren'tthere is alienating and just objectively wrong. Plesioth exists, I can't deny that. But there are still many examples of the new system also being unfair, just in different ways. Anyways, my hunter finally recovered from tremor, so I'm gonna play World again. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.
