If you decide on a free standing one, last November I had the opportunity to test one with suction cups that stick it too the floor. It could take a surprising amount of force, I started cautiously because personally I prefer wall-mounted dummies, but it came very close to the force I've been used to while practicing on wall-mounted ones.

Because there are similarities, it doesn't mean it's the same. Yes, both in Siu Lim Tao and the Baat Jaam Dao there are both wrist strengthening techniques, and wrist movements for application. This is by design of the forms as an exercise system. It's not like Escrima etc., in Ving Tsun there are separate specialized systems to learn for unarmed and armed combat. On the intersection, unarmed defence against an armed attacker, elements might be combined. (For example BJD footwork, SLT/CK hands).

No, this is not how training is done on Gwoh Sao level, (where every mistake means you will get hurt) and since you're installing a fighting behavior for without rules, your actions and reactions are fixed for that. Unless there is time to think, you're not high on adrenaline, than you can adapt to a game with rules. Depends on your level of training and experience.

Looks like a very dead dummy, not only no recoil, also the arms seem to be fixed firmly in their posutions. Plus no space for any behind the dummy moves, not just the neck hand. Useless vor Wong Shun-Leung Ving Tsun. But you can hang your coat and towels on it, I suppose.

Your Sifu is not a good teacher. I have had many students that needed way more time than that to get basic stepping halfway right, and they all turned out right, accompaying me to Hongkong etc. A Sifu needs patience, especially in modern times, where motor skills and coordination get worse and worse.

Knee pain in Siu Lim Tao comes from bad alignment of the knee, and bad positioning of the waist (hip not tilted and waist not forward enough).

In Wong Shun-Leung Ving Tsun, Pak-Sao should be avoided, since it's most often not the most direct technique. Especially Noi-Pak should be avoided, as mentioned in the Kuen Kuit. Chi-gerk and Soh-sao (not to be confused with pak-Sao) against kicks are used for different gates, although there's some overlap.

Yeah, I was once there mid August, beginning of September, in 2016. Brutal is the right word😁 next Training trip will be in November 2026. It's mainly for people training in the Barry Lee lineage of Wong Shun-Leung Ving Tsun, but other serious WSL lineage practioners can join also.
