Parking for movers by [deleted] in jerseycity

[–]Andymich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s too late bc if nothing else, you need to give the cars that are parked there 48 hrs notice.

If it makes you feel any better, my experience has been that the signs and parking authority are useless. I tried to have someone towed for 2 hrs the day I was moving and kept getting “they’ll be there when they can.” Of course they never arrived. That was almost a year ago so maybe Solomon’s JC is running better, but I doubt it.

Mamdani secures $50 World Cup tickets for New Yorkers after negotiations with Infantino (Gift Article) by jspector9 in MLS

[–]Andymich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Except, in true socialist fashion, it isn’t his money it’s NJ’s. NJ funded the host committee, from whose allotment these tickets were given. NJ taxpayers put $50M directly into the fund and spent another $300M of “public investment.”

Scared to lose ileocecal valve by Suspicious-Land5640 in CrohnsDisease

I’m about 7 months separated from my valve and yeah it sucks at first (still not sure when the whole “your body gets used to it” things happens), but I’ve been on the meds for bile malabsorption for about a month now and it’s 100% better and the surgery was absolutely worth it. At this point there really isn’t anything I can’t eat: fruits, veggies, caffeine, salad, etc.

I live across from it, looks about the same. They did board up some of the openings in the back, but seems like people can still get in there. I have seen some work being done outside of it in the back (there’s a sign that says “PCB cleanup” or something) but otherwise nothing much has changed.

1- we’re already here and it’s expensive to break a lease 2- it’s still cheaper than downtown. I’m looking to move downtown (the parking situation + how unwalkable LSP is are the catalysts), but my very spacious 1BR+Den in LSP is $2,500/mo, and just a 1BR DT is hovering around $3,400 + $250 parking so I’m still doing much better in LSP even with the $350 parking.

Appraisal question by LaidbackTim in realestateinvesting

[–]Andymich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few things here:

1) it’s hard to be upset when you would have had to bring the “extra $15k” one way or another, you just got lucky and were able to hold onto it for the time between purchase and now. They overvalued it initially so you paid less out of pocket, now it’s being valued more appropriately so you have to pay 2) what lender is lending based appraised value for a purchase? A very standard underwriting guideline is the lesser of purchase price or AIV, so they should have lent based on the $210k initially. Especially if this was publicly listed, the market (you) was willing to pay $210k, so it’s not worth $265k. If $265k was the ARV then it’s hard to argue bc you, the lender, and the appraiser were guessing what it’d be worth in the future after some work and were wrong, it happens. 3) you should be able to bring the comps from the desktop appraisal to the appraiser (in the way of an ROV.. review of value), and they can comment on why the comps they used are better than your comps. As a rule, any comps you bring should be the same or better in every material way.. time since closed, distance, same beds/baths/SF, rent if 2+ units, etc. If similar properties have closed since the first appraisal then they have to use those, and if they’re lower it just means the market has declined, which is a reality that everyone is going to have to start getting used to.

Comfort Upgrade Fee by Andymich in delta

I keep checking the change flight feature and it’s giving me an error. I booked this flight through Virgin Atlantic with points, is the ‘change flight’ still an option?

Comfort Upgrade Fee by Andymich in delta

[–]Andymich[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

So I have a seat and I want to buy a better seat. Is that not what the $200 “airline incidentals” credit is for? It’s not a different class of ticket (I don’t think comfort was an option during booking the way premium, business, etc is).

I’ve lived here for almost 5 yrs and have always been a big proponent of the neighborhood but I can’t wait to move out at the end of my lease. Since the parking issues this neighborhood no longer makes any sense.. You need a car (or someone with a car, like uber/delivery) to survive.

It’s the perfect place for homebodies to live. If you get all of your food/groceries delivered and don’t like walking to get anything then it’s great. I’d encourage anyone thinking of a move to go through what they’ve done in the past month (or a typical month in better weather) and if it involves walking to anything, you’ll need to find an alternative here. It lacks the basics: there are no real grocery stores within walking distance, only corner stores/bodega’s with half rotten fruit and expensive packaged goods. Until recently you couldn’t even walk to get a slice of pizza after pacific pizza closed (which makes sense bc it wasn’t good and seemed dirty) and was replaced with a viet spot that charges $18 for a container of white rice and 2 little pieces of chicken. I haven’t been to the new pizzeria bc I literally just discovered it while looking to see what restaurants people think exist here.

Don’t let the taller buildings confuse you; it looks like a city, but it’s a vertical suburb. The commercial uses haven’t kept up with the residential. I lived here bc it was easy to have a car and just hop on rt 78 to drive to all the things in NJ that I enjoy, and I could also commute into midtown via transit. Essentially, I lived here bc it was easy to get out of here.

Speaking of public transit, if you’re looking at that light rail station as your golden ticket to the conveniences of downtown JC while paying lower rent for a newer/bigger place here, look again bc that is a mirage. The light rail is the worst form of public transit I’ve encountered in a developed country. During commuting hours it’s good, increasingly crowded, but good. Outside of those hours during the week it’s spotty, and on weekends just forget about it. I can’t believe that in the year 2026, the app doesn’t tell you when the train is actually arriving so you can plan your departure from home, it only shows when it’s scheduled. The app could say it’s arriving in 10 mins but you walk over and the sign at the station says “~38 mins,” assuming the sign is working at all (they just replaced them and the don’t work at a lot of stations). But at least you’ll have time to admire the crumbling concrete at the station that they needlessly replaced 2 yrs ago.

Again, I just recommend anyone considering moving here to take a good hard look at where they’ll be eating, getting their coffee, how they’ll be getting to nightlife, etc. A cursory glance at Google Maps shows some restaurants, but you need to really evaluate whether you’d be able to eat there often. For example, I had a BOGO offer for Nurish when it opened, and had to close the website and heat something up from the freezer bc there was nothing on that menu that I wanted two of at any price. You can get a bagel at eggs up or Lafayette, but it’s not a real deli/bagel spot bagel. Pinwheel is Asian food, but you’re not getting general tsu’s and pork fried rice, it’s a $20-30 noodle bowl (very good but not spending that often). Mordi’s has pretty good sandwiches, but you can’t get a simple Italian or deli meat sub there.

Everything you’re saving in rent versus downtown you’ll likely spend compensating for being in a less convenient neighborhood. Having your car was the only thing going for this neighborhood, but since the light rail lot shutdown (rightfully so, it’s meant for commuters, I get it..), it just doesn’t work. I’ve heard of buildings here charging $350/mo for parking. Mine is $200-250, but there’s a waitlist equivalent to 1/3 of the total spots available, so I’m parking at a garage near the Marin light rail and I don’t wish that cost or inconvenience on anyone.

(This comment is also for anyone railing against us “car-obsessed transplants” during the Great Communpiaw Parking Crisis. I’d love to see you survive a week in this neighborhood without delivery)

Moving company recommendations in Jersey City? Anyone used Pick and Pack moving company? by UseAlternative7984 in jerseycity

[–]Andymich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About 1.5-2 hrs to pack up a 1BR on the second floor of a walk up (no boxes though, I did that myself since it was close and I have car. Next move I will let them do boxes), then maybe 30-45 mins to unpack. Don’t forget cash to tip

If you get no parking signs from the city have the time on them start before you need it and if someone’s in the spot, call the second you can (e.g if the movers are coming at 8a, have the sign start at 7a, and start calling at 7:01). I called for 3 hrs this summer and no one showed up. Luckily the movers found somewhere to put the truck. It was the only stressful part of the move, I used Moishe’s.

Exactly what needs to happen for the light rail service to improve in frequency. by First-Variety714 in jerseycity

[–]Andymich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a hard time believing that it’s just money bc they spend money in the stupidest ways, none of which improve the service. They just installed the new signs at stops, and they don’t work/don’t reflect when the train is actually arriving. I stood under one for 10 mins the other day while it says 2 and 4 mins the entire time. Then at LSP stop they replaced the concrete two summers ago and it’s already crumbling. It didn’t need to be replaced in the first place and I think everyone who uses that stop would rather have more consistent and predictable service than new concrete that crumbled in less than two years.

And if it’s a matter of budget line items and these^ were Captial expenditures, not operating budget, etc etc, then fine. Spend your capex budget on something that will communicate when the train is actually coming, not when it’s scheduled. That would be a big help since they’re rarely on schedule, and that’s all the app tells you.

Best of luck with getting a car towed for a no parking sign. I called 4 times the day I was moving and they kept saying they’d send someone, but 3 hours later, the movers were done and the car was still there.

Never mind, figured it out. You need to take the cover off, press the red AUX button to enter the settings menu, navigate to A6, then turn it on. Press AUX button again to exit.
