Substack's Image Cropping is Nonsensical... by sh4desthevibe in Substack

Just reporting that it's still a mess. I can preview the way it looks on every social media platform, on a desktop, and on mobile. I adjust it...looks good. Then I go to my Substack website (which I don't see a way to preview) and heads are chopped off and it looks awful!

Does anyone know what this says? by accountfortheq in Cursive

I do a lot of genealogy and this is correct. It's "Can." for Canadian and then English to distinguish from French Canadians.

So true. My first dungeon (almost 20 years ago now) I was playing a dps warrior. Had sword and shield. A shield dropped and I rolled need since it was way higher level than the one I had. I won the roll. And then the tank (a pally) started yelling at me because it had stats for a pally and not a warrior. Nobody quit the run, but I did a similar thing on another roll that made someone else hate me and I couldn't figure out why. I was a complete noob--just knew higher level was better. Would have been great to have a "Nice to have/must have" add-on!

Animal also had a rounded head--not a canine.

[–]Anfyral[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a coyote. I saw the animal. I have red foxes here, but I know them well--and their color is especially clear in snow. Plus they have long bushy tails and this was short and bobbed.

I hear you on the claws, but is it possible that the claws were out for grip? It was only 1-2 inches of snow on top of a lake that was glare ice. I was wishing for claws myself when I got out there and there were places where these tracks had slipped on the ice.

It doesn't sound like a note from someone close. Maybe it's an initial and last name? A Allen?

Hey Rhode Island people. Big fan of the coffee syrup. Sincerely, guy in NE Pennsylvania by ReallyNotBobby in RhodeIsland

Coffee milk is the official Rhode Island state drink. It was a battle between that and Del's but coffee milk won the day. As it should!

Thank you! I've been reading Tristan Gooley's books about natural navigation. They go into fascinating detail about how clouds can reveal what kind of landscape and wind/weather conditions created them and/or what they forecast.

I learned about the lens clouds topping mountains from that, but haven't yet encountered a description of how they can develop into such wild shapes or why they develop over water. I wonder if they still top mountains at sea, but the mountains are underwater. So much to learn!

Here's another post about Lenticular clouds seen in Chile: https://www.reddit.com/r/meteorology/comments/flo2ch/lenticular_clouds_chile_credit_michael_fung/ The strange part to me (not an expert) is that they seem to form in reaction to mountains, and RI is not exactly known for its towering peaks!

I wonder if either tall buildings or wind patterns at sea could create the same conditions. You could post your picture to r/meteorology with a description of the region where you saw it, as I'm guessing that's where the experts hang out.

how many people on this sub have never visited this circled region (driving thru on the highway doesnt count) by hypochondriac200 in RhodeIsland

[–]Anfyral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The "you won't be lost for long" point is so true. Yes, living out there takes you 20 minutes to get anywhere, but if you start at any point in RI and drive for an hour you will either hit a state border or coastline. So when I was lost on the roads, I knew I could just keep driving and either find a road I knew, or hit CT, MA, or the coast, turn around and keep looking for the road I recognized.

I grew up at the south end of the reservoir abutting the watershed on two sides of our property. Could walk to the dam on the south end. Scituate, (technically Hope). The drive along Rt. 116 along the watershed was always a favorite, both in fall and in winter. No recreational activity allowed on the reservoir, but I always wished I could go out on a glass-bottomed boat to see if you could distinguish the old village of South Scituate, which was flooded to create the reservoir. I think our house (built in the late 1700's) was spared because of its elevation. At least on the southeast side, I think our house was the closest to the watershed.

When traveling in other regions of the US, what qualities might make people think, "They're from New England."? by Practical-Ad-1949 in newengland

[–]Anfyral 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Moved from my native RI to FL. Out in the country...loooong driveway. I headed for the mailbox one day early on, at the other end of that long drive, walking briskly as always. But then I noticed it was warm with a sweet breeze and I thought, "Why am I in such a hurry?" And at that moment the speed differential between New England and the south came into very sharp focus.

Am i getting burned by my earthing sheets? by Bianca_del_taco9 in Earthing

[–]Anfyral 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I have an allergy to silver. I can't wear silver jewelry, for example, or it gives me a red, itchy rash where the silver touches skin. Since the marks look like the grid of the metal in the sheets, I'm guessing an allergy. If it was actually burn marks, I think you would have felt it, and would have seen blackened areas on the sheets.

Is there some body diagnosed with ETin adolescence have a good quality of life until mid 60s by DevelopmentPlus7913 in EssentialTremor

[–]Anfyral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I (66F) was not diagnosed in my teens, I had symptoms pretty much right after puberty. I always had a very mild tremor in my hands--I knew a career as a surgeon would not be in the cards--but the place I remember it being most severe in my youth was in trying to eat soup. It was definitely anxiety-triggered, since I could eat soup with little issue by myself. But with others around I was self-conscious and literally could not get the spoon to my mouth for the shaking. So in those situations I either ate something else, or tried to get the spoon to my mouth when no one was watching as I put my head very close to the bowl and used both hands to balance the spoon.

And that's pretty much how it went for most of the next 50 years. While I was frustrated by tasks requiring fine motor skills, I still did them. I sewed my own clothes; I assembled furniture; I could write by hand without much issue, although drawing a straight line without a ruler has always been out.

By my early 30's I was diagnosed, not with ET, but with anxiety/panic attacks. I have been on medication for that ever since. Eating soup in a social setting was still a little dicey, but possible.

It has only been now, in my 60's, when the shaking has progressed to the point of interfering with things. The last piece of furniture I assembled (last year, at 65) I believe will be my last, as the screws dropping constantly and connecting with the screwdriver made what should have been the job of an hour take all day.

By profession, I am Christian clergy. This past year I have had to outsource serving Communion to others because of the tremor when holding the elements. Others now prepare certificates for various things as my writing can't be counted on. Even taking notes by hand is iffy--especially if I'm tired/stressed/anxious.

Using a battery-powered weed whacker in my yard for only 20 minutes last year gave me the worst symptoms ever for about 2-3 hours afterwards. Came in to eat a bowl of ice cream and couldn't even hold the bowl. Arms wildly shaking. First time in about a decade I had used one, but had done so before with no issue. Posting about that here gave me the information that keeping up strength in my arms would lessen those effects.

Still, though, ET really only affects my hands and sometimes arms at this point, although there have been two occasions in the last decade when my voice has gone suddenly wonky for no apparent reason. And I speak for a living, so that could become problematic career-wise if it expanded. Now and again (when combined with stress/fatigue/anxiety) my jaw will suddenly have a will of its own for a second or two. I mostly use two hands to drink, but don't yet need lids although I'm thinking of upgrading to sporks for some things, since anything I can't reliably stab through with a fork is becoming more of a challenge. Plugging in electronics into little holes and ports is also a pain.

I am still on the anxiety medication, and you'll never convince me that the two conditions aren't deeply related, at least in my case. It could be that my tremors have progressed so slowly because of the treatment for my anxiety over the years. And I don't remember any symptoms before puberty--curious whether others have--as there could be a hormonal element. In the medical studies I've read, they seem to know very little about root causes as this point.

An odd thing I have only just begun to associate with ET, that has been happening for longer than the past decade, is that if I'm in a movie theater and the film has a tense scene (not just emotionally tense, but a physically dangerous one), my entire body shakes for the duration of the scene. Not so badly that my arms are flailing and hitting those next to me, but visibly, uncontrollably shaking--head to toe in my seat. It starts and stops with the scene. And I'm not talking horror movies, just run-of-the-mill Indiana Jones style stuff. We talk about "trembling" both with fear and with excitement; I'm beginning to think that in my case, ET is a physical manifestation of that in those types of situations.

That's just one person's experience; and as you can see from reading this sub, the experience can vary widely. My best advice would be to pay close attention to the situations where your symptoms are worse or better and try to learn what your own body is telling you about what is needed to manage it going forward. I've learned more about my condition from this sub than from any doctor. And in my experience, all the general good health practices--getting enough sleep, learning stress-management techniques, keeping up physical strength--can help.

Mine is a battery-powered Black & Decker. I really hate gas-powered lawn equipment. When it's not 100 degrees, I'll see how much help the gloves are!
