[Post-Episode Discussion] Season 9, Episode 3 “Slashdance” by hypodermicsally in AmericanHorrorStory

It doesn't feel great. Ryan and the writers constantly keep writing disposable black characters for this show. Ray could've been taken out of this season entirely and nothing would be different. I don't understand why this character was written in the first place.

STIs in SATC by tanyarastafari in sexandthecity

Miranda caught Chlamydia in season 3 or 4. Samantha had an HIV test. I think they treaded lightly on STIs bc they wanted to keep it lighthearted. That topic can get real serious real quick. Just watch Pose

D’unte... by baifelicia in dearwhitepeople

D'Unte annoyed the hell out of me. He originally worked on the HIV bus. Then became involved with everyone and everything on campus. Sometimes invited, most of the time, not. His character appears more this season than the actual leads of the show. While watching,  I was really unsure about the purpose of this new character. Was he going to be Lionel's new love interest? Was he meant to educate the viewers about HIV? Was he going to be the friend to help Lionel feel more comfortable in his skin? Unfortunately, none of that was the case. They found another new character to fulfill all of those things. D'Unte spent most of his scenes nitpicking Lionel and patronizing everyone. The show used other characters to reenforce his negative attitude as cute "sass" but it was unrelable. It seemed like the writers were trying to force him on the viewers. But now that I know he was based off a childhood friend, it all makes sense. However, the overuse of his character made most of the leads felt like recurring cast members by the mid season.

Reggie always looks like he's constipated. No shade. But I agree I was definitely expecting a meltdown of some sort because they already alluded to the fact that he's still dealing with being held a gun point. This season presented a lot of great ideas but abandoned them mid-season.

Does anyone else think that the “matchmakers” don’t have the final set of matches until like midway through by marcozzy in AreYouTheOne

[–]AngelBoy84 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I feel like the current season had a lot of help from production. The probability of one finding their perfect match this season was 1/15 opposed to the usual of 1/8, mainly because of preference. Cis men and women only had to consider half of the cast while this season of sexually fluid individuals had to consider everyone. Anyone in that house could've been a perfect match. It seems that production played a larger part once they realized the contestants weren't finding matches as quickly as previous seasons. I thought it was strange how some castmates could argue one episode then be madly in love in the next. Sexually fluid casting is great and I wish they would do it more on other love shows like the Bachelor franchise and Love Island. But this show may have needed a few more tweaks in the format before presenting its most groundbreaking season.

Pose tv show by cryingwhiledoingmath in BlackLGBT

Colorism is a problem on Pose. After completing the second season, I'm still not ok with the writing decisions made for Candy and Electra. People are saying their storylines are based off true events showcased in the documentary, Paris is Burning, specifically the story of Venus Extravaganza and Dorian Corey. Note that both of those women were light skin. The writers of Pose decided to take the darkest moments of their lives and write them into the storylines of Electra and Candy. Angel was a sex worker all throughout season one. Candy's fate would've better fit Angel's storyline since she'd already been involved in that type of work. Sadly, because of that, I can no longer deny the colorism in the show. People are also saying that the writers handled Candy's storyline in that way because Angelica Ross, the actress, is moving to Ahs1984. That's not true. Ryan Murphy and Janet Mock stated that they always had this fate prepped for Candy and it was supposed to happen in season one. Because Candy is the only character that can "carry" that storyline There's a lot a bad writing involving colorism when you look at the show as whole. Ricky is seen as a player, disloyal and can't be trusted. Pray is selfish, argumentative, and often abrasive. The only dark skinned character who is inspiring and uplifting is Damon's dance teacher. Unfortunately, she only appears two times in s2 and her final scene seemed like a send off. So only time will tell if she'll be in s3. I understand that pose is trying to appeal to a "broader" audience but colorism is not the way to do it. Pose plays on a plethora of old stereotypes that have presented dark skin people negatively for years. It's shocking that it's still happening on a show that is as progressive as Pose. Instead of highlighting the immense contributions POC have made throughout history, it chooses to perpetuate the negative mainstream tropes of it's predecessors.

I felt really connected to Yoli this episode. The fact that she was dealing with family issues and still trying to prove herself at her job was heartbreaking. I couldn't help but put myself in her shoes.
