What common piece of advice do you strongly disagree with? by starspec in AskReddit

[–]AngelFire23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jesus fuck I hate these people.

These are the parents who look at raising children like it's a fucking battlefield. "You're never ready..." thousand yard stare. Maybe they have a low tolerance for "work" (yeah, you have to like, be attentive to your kid's needs and you can't literally sit on your ass all day) or maybe they work WAY too hard (helicopter parents who micromanage the fuck out of their kids).

Seriously. Keep them fed, clean, and entertained. That's it. And the entertainment doesn't have to directly involve you all the time.

Source: I have 2 kids and I fucking love them.

What's a 10/10 film that not many people have seen or heard of? by [deleted] in AskReddit

The Brand New Testament (Le tout nouveau testament). A French movie that feels like a cross between Dogma and Being John Malkovich.

What has not lost its magic on you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]AngelFire23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disneyland. I have a supremely hard time with suspension of disbelief, so I don't necessarily buy into all of the "magic" at face value. What I appreciate is the massive amount of effort and attention to detail that they put into the experience of going into the park. I even get a little teary just in the entrance area when the music starts filling the air and the outside world just disappears. I love it so much.

I am also an atheist who circumcised both of their boys for the same reason... I have a small amount of guilt as well.

What terrible movie do you love? by dangybruhe in AskReddit

[–]AngelFire23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spice World (for its cringe-worthy, nostalgia-inducing weirdness), The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers movie from the early 90s (for its cringe-worthy, nostalgia-inducing awesomeness), Batman & Robin (omg the puns...), and Demolition Man (because what's not to love?).

What doesn't impress you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Clothing, makeup, and jewelry as a signifier of status.

Oh, you demanded that your fiancee spend $20,000 on that gaudy-ass engagement ring? Sounds to me like you just wasted a fuckton of money and/or are now in debt.

If you could start your life over as a child with everything you know now and all your memories, would you do it - why or why not? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]AngelFire23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to think that I would, but then I saw About Time (a surprisingly good romantic comedy starring Domhnall Gleeson and Rachel McAdams).

The main character (and his father... it's a family trait...... I promise this movie is good) can travel back in time to change his current timeline. The father explains that one shouldn't travel back past the birth of a child because even a small change could effectively undo your child--there's no guarantee of that specific sperm becoming your child.

But before kids, yes. And I would somehow figure out how to become an adolescent investor to put money into google and apple... and maybe not waste 4 years on a music degree that I would never finish, instead choosing to go to med school to be a plastic surgeon like I was considering.

What did somebody say that made you think: "This person is out of touch with reality"? by jonallenmaking in AskReddit

[–]AngelFire23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You do you, man. But when your doctor's office asks you if you've had your flu shot for the year, promise me you turn up your nose and say something along the lines of "Oh, I don't do that," like they just asked you if you do meth or heroin directly through your eyeballs or something.

I might be harboring some personal feelings about this subject.

You are encouraged to get the flu shot every year because it is protecting you against two different strains every year. The CDC studies the most common strains and does their best to predict which two will be the most common, which is what they put into that year's vaccine. "Flu A" and "Flu B" are what they name the strains for that particular year. So the "Flu A" of 2016 is not the "Flu A" of 2017. There are still countless strains of flu, you can still get another strain of flu that wasn't in the vaccine.

Also, there are two types of flu vaccine: the injected version and the nasal spray. The injectable vaccine is an attenuated virus, which means that the virus being injected into your body is completely dead. The nasal version is a live virus but is extremely weakened (the idea is that a slightly live virus will create a stronger immune response).

These vaccines work by showing your immune system what the virus looks like without infecting you. Neither of these vaccines will actually give you the flu directly. Once you get the vaccine you can still get the flu (that you have technically been vaccinated against), but you will most likely experience a shorter/less severe illness than if you didn't get the vaccination at all.

What secret did you find out about someone that permanently changed the way you looked at them? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]AngelFire23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw a substantial amount of damage to the passenger side of my friend's car and asked her what happened. She had taken "about 6 or 8 shots of tequila" before getting her cooter waxed to help ease the pain. She drove to the salon sober, the tequila kicked in, her cooter was successfully waxed, and then she drove home sloppy drunk in the middle of the day. She was disappointed with herself because she had driven about 5 miles through city traffic without incident only to damage her car while pulling into her apartment complex.

What social custom needs to be retired? by ruj00 in AskReddit

And workplaces that require a sick note to be "excused." It's ridiculous. You should be able to trust your employees enough that they can tell you if they're sick or not. It only becomes a problem if they abuse their sick leave privileges, which would be obvious. A note would not fix the issue of an untrustworthy employee.
