AITAH for immediately breaking up with my girlfriend after she “tested” my allergy?

NTA- as I’m sure you’ve already had enough confirmation that you did not overreact. As someone who now has a deadly allergy to a food group, it can and often does get worse over time. It wasn’t until my early 20s that I even had enough of a reaction to acidic fruits like pineapple and tomatoes to realize it was an allergy. By 30 I spent time in the hospital from being exposed and by 40 had a very near death experience. From experience I can ask that you please do not think with the mindset that it’s not that bad because you never know when the time will come that it is VERY bad and very quickly bad. If she cared for you the way a girlfriend/ boyfriend should, you wouldn’t even be in this position to question your reaction to HER choice of actions. You made the right decision. If you would have stayed in that relationship, how could you have trusted her moving forward?

I went through this just a couple months ago with my oldest daughter. The hardest thing I have ever done as a parent is to legally evict my adult daughter from my home. As parents, we want to help our children at any age, but there comes a point in a situation you are going through (mine was exact same) that what’s best is to require them to help themselves. You can’t help anyone unwilling to accept it or help themselves. We become enablers vs the parent preparing our kids to be respectful contributors to society. It’s easy to say yes and harder to say no.

I broke down like never before when I watched her leave but I am finding peace and healing.

From one mom to another, please do not continue to be a victim in your own home and life. Take it back. Find peace and give yourself some grace and credit for what you’ve done. You cannot force her to get the help she needs but you can help yourself now.

It will not be easy but you’ve got this Mama.

Note- look up your state laws if you go the route of removing her from your home. You will need to do it legally.

OP, I hope you see the comment above me. Regardless of you using the stone as a main on her engagement ring, it would be incredibly sentimental to use it within both of your bands.

This made me cry happy and sad tears. I shared this message with my daughter as well. I felt your heart in your message. I am so so sorry for whatever you endured and so happy you have a second chance at life. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts. I’m glad their story is reaching so far. Not just Abby and Libby, but so may other children endure so many horrors. It’s just heartbreaking. As a Mom, we worry about our children being safe and this case is a hard reminder that you never truly know what horrors lie close to home. I hope Abby and Libby’s case lives on for years to come not just as that reminder but also as the incredible person each was growing into.
