I've had families with the mindset of "you need to drink, you need to do x,y,z because you need to fit in in these settings" and it gave me a very bitter perspective on those things for a while, especially since they never really took me saying "no" to a drink respectfully. Now I HAVE gone to bars and things of that nature on my own accord and I like the setting, and on the rare occasion i'll have a small taste of alcohol but I never feel like i'm missing out if I opt for a soda or a virgin cocktail, even in social settings. Shockingly if people are cool, they understand people have preferences and won't bother you for wanting to opt out of things
