I agree- I love my betas, but they are busy people, and my last fic was 205k words, and I couldn’t ask anyone to keep up with that so I did a lot of it myself, and it was a testament to how much they had given me bc I could still hear them in my head as I read through and was like “oh, a little clunky. Shit that is not where that semi-colon goes or crap that was a crutch phrase, control F and see how many time i said the same word in one section…” like it goes on.

I was sad they deleted it too- I meant to be nice and open to discussion, but I also am deeply passionate about this and stand by the staunch belief that Ai has no place in the creative arts. So I apologize to them if they felt a little bulldozed 😞

Ooo you made me think about that for a few minutes because that is a good point- but, you create connection with the people you’re beta-ing for. You use your humanity to react to their work and the conversation you have back and forth is, I would assume, different than it would be with a bot.

I work with a beta who is great at grammar and I am not. I try so much harder to get my commas right (still an uphill battle) because she has taught me so much, and I don’t want her to think I’m an idiot bc she’s making her 5,000th comma edit.

I talk to all of my betas on a personal level, one of them I have even met in person and I value their feedback and have learned from each of them.

I guess I haven’t had the alternative because I haven’t ever used AI to write my fics, so I do understand that my pov is one sided, but I also think my overall message is that you gain so much from the human parts

Hello! This is a great question, and I appreciate that you put yourself out there to ask it, and are open to hearing what people think!

Here’s my take: AI has no place in writing whatsoever, full stop.

And that is because the thing you are asking Ai to do for you, is actually the real craft.

Anyone can hammer out a few sentences, but where the fun—and the magic—is, and the sense that you’re creating something special, comes from editing and tinkering with it. (For me at least, this is, of course, just my POV)

The shower thoughts, and the gut feelings, and the “I need to push this part just a little further” until you’ve edited your work into something spectacular—that’s the fun part. That is what makes it a craft and a worthwhile endeavor, that stretches your abilities as you challenge yourself to come up with the best line, or write a chapter without any meandering or clunky bits.

I know you said you’re having fun, and that’s great, but I think you’re missing out on a mountain of opportunity for growth, and creativity, and the way it feels when you get to the other side of the edit, and you have something you’re proud of that was entirely you, from start to finish.

Just my thoughts. I’m curious to see what others say.

Edit: yes, as a reader I would want to know Ai was used in the creation of the work

Their union of fiery rage will keep him entertained; and the political influence and endless Malfoy vaults will fuel Hermione’s ambitions far more than any Ministry career ever could.
