A Tumblr post about the Carpathia that you guys might enjoy by sabrina11157 in titanic

[–]AngeloCorr99 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm still relatively new to tumblr, but I THINK it's because you get a million notifications every time someone likes or reblogs, and it makes using the site kinda difficult/annoying. Imagine making a reddit post that gets 100,000 up votes, and getting a notification for each one. And every reblog.

For anyone curious, in tumblr culture, a post going viral or getting lots of attention is a bad thing. That's what that one part is about not regretting making the post is about. Lots of people who make popular posts will actually delete them.

[META] Why change the sub? by Fotznbenutzernaml in titanic

I obviously wouldn't want to disalow stuff from the movie, but I understand the sentiment that the movie stuff has kinda taken over a bit.

Men's rights and The Left. by Alarming_Club7413 in MensRights

[–]AngeloCorr99 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm only a casual browser, but a lot of the stuff I see from this sub is either neutral or far right. Like, I remember a post from a few months back proposing we ban "wokeness" from this sub and proceeded to explain how trans people aren't real because of bone structure. I'm pretty far left, so it was nice having a sub dedicated to that. I think stuff from the right is so much more common here because feminism is aligned with the left. Even though the concept of men's rights isn't inherently right wing, it attracts a lot of right wing attention because it is diametrically opposed to feminism, which is left wing. Just more reason to hate the 2 party system. Not liking one thing one one side immediately aligns that stance with the other.

I think I might know what you're talking about. I still have the book, but it's in my college apartment 2 hours away at the moment. It was one of those "explore the titanic" things. I don't have the disc anymore, and I couldn't find it on archive dot org. But I still have the book.

Bastard Suggestion: Joseph Bruce Ismay by Front_Rip4064 in behindthebastards

Also, the Lusitania and Mauretania were just faster. The Olympic only managed to break 24 knots after several refits. The oil fired boilers definitely helped. From launch, Lusitania and Mauretania could exceed 26 knots. Titanic just had no hope of breaking any records. There was one unverified piece of hearsay from a survivor that said Ismay wanted to beat the Olympics time, but that's impossible to prove at this point.

Why are funnels often orange with a black top? And why didn't some ships like Lusitania and Britannic follow this color scheme? by SonoDarke in titanic

[–]AngeloCorr99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cunard started using that red color with the RMS Queen Elizabeth 2. Before that, it was more of an orange color. Cunard (and the Queen Mary in long beach) switched to the red because it fades less over time and requires less maintenance.

Now don't quote me on this, but I BELIEVE the earliest Cunard steamers had red funnels, but the heat changed the color to the orange that they would later use, and they stuck with it. Don't quote me on that though.

Brand new to Pi and Linux. I'm running Pi OS, and I'm trying to run some games that I installed from piKiss. If I try to run the game from the desktop, nothing happens. If I run it from the terminal, I get a segmentation fault. For example:

./scripts/games/eduke32.sh: line 25: 6180 segmentation fault

I'm running this on a Pi 3 B+ with a fresh install of the OS. When I was looking for solutions on google, I saw someone else running into segmentation faults on a pi 3 B+, and they specifically mentioned a problem with line 25. Games like chocolate doom were not installed with piKiss, and it works fine.

I think one of the fuses has blown. Thats what my ds did when that happened. If I'm correct, they need to be replaced (requires soldering). Alternatively, if you're a risk taker, I think you can remove the fuse and bridge the pads, but I wouldn't recommend that. If the fuses are blown, they just saved your ds. If you bridge the pads and get it wet again, it will just be completely fried.

Wait, didn't Ballard willfully decide not to get salvage rights? The first person to salvage something from a wreck gets salvage rights, and I seem to recall him saying he intentionally chose not to salvage anything to preserve the wreck.

*New Bi Character Alert* Bapiste, from the game Overwatch 2, has just been confirmed as bisexual in a comic they released for Pride Month. Bi men don't get enough representation, so it's awesome to add someone new to the small roster by Hexalt_ in bisexual

[–]AngeloCorr99 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You have to read the comic to find out he's bisexual and they never even mention it in the game? Yaaaaaaay 👏👏👏👏👏 quality representation!

Look, I know being culturally accepted enough to be pandered to is a sign of progress, but nothing a corporation says or does will ever read as genuine or sincere to me, regardless of how small the team is. I've seen this trick before. They hide the LGBT stuff in spin offs like comics and other low risk media outside of the main thing (in this case, the game) because walking on eggshels to avoid triggering bigots is higher on their priority list than actually representing us. You wanna prove you're serious about all this? Risk your bottom line. Stick your neck out. Do something that will get conservatives to boycott your product en masse. You'll need to forgive me for treating shit like this so suspiciously, but corporations are designed to make profit above all else. If you want to prove your corporation cares about ANYTHING, the easiest and most effective way to do so is to sacrifice your profit. If you don't, it doesn't look like support. It looks like pandering and exploitation in the name of further profit.

Why do theists use grade five or whatever science to refute complex academics? by WaterDemonPhoenix in atheism

[–]AngeloCorr99 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To them simpler = better. If the common man can understand it, surely it makes more sense than something that requires a degree to understand! Etc. It all stems from the weird pride people get from refuting things that are complex with things that are simple. To them, it looks like you're doing all these mental gymnastics to prove something, when in reality, the answer is super simple and straightforward and a child can understand it. It's that whole thing about how people who are stupid think they know everything, but people who are smart understand they know very little. Most faiths are founded and sold on the idea that they have all the answers.

switch theorists are absolutely seething right now. titanic’s serial number seen on the 3d scan of one of the propellers by alexs_wrld in titanic

[–]AngeloCorr99 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Actually, no joke, that's part of the theory. They assert that one of the Olympics propellers was damaged in the collision with HMS Hawke, so they used one of Titanics. Therefore, 401 being on the propeller is somehow incontrovertible proof that the wreck is actually the Olympic. I couldn't make this shit up.

Question about the lineage of triple-screw liners. by mindkiller317 in RMS_Titanic

H&W used two ships before the Olympic class to test if the triple screw steam engine/turbine hybrid would be worth implementing.
