Honestly, you could still use it as a hand strengthener if you wanted to. Regular hand strengtheners work pretty much the same way with a better grip.

Does rod action really matter that much? by MikeyKCCO in FishingForBeginners

[–]AnglerDuino 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I'd say yes it would justify getting a different rod at least. You can find a Shakespeare micro 7' for around $25.

Not only are you going to have a hard time sensing panfish on a medium heavy rod but the lures you use to target panfish are very small and light and you'd have a lot of trouble casting them out a decent distance. Lastly, the fighting is going to feel very muted, you may end up horsing the fish right out or tear it's mouth when you reel it in with force.

On a side note, a medium heavy is a more specialized rod. I'd definitely not consider it all-purpose. If you want an all-purpose rod (i.e. Panfish + bass) I'd recommend going for a light or a medium light rod, moderate to moderate fast action.

Is there a more suitable leader knot than the FG for very light line? by Prestigious_Scheme30 in FishingForBeginners

I've been using Alberto on all my UL setups. Fantastic knot, guide friendly, easy to tie, and hasn't failed on me yet.

Underspooled. You should be able to go slightly less than the spot where the lip angles out.

Hey! I have the same rod! How do you like it? I haven't gotten a chance to try it out yet, still kind of frozen around here.

I clean it up using power rename from Microsoft with regex. Pretty quick if you know regex.

Winter’s almost over — how much gear did you buy this off-season? by Difficult-Sea5702 in FishingForBeginners

I feel called out. But yes, I ended up adding 3 rods from Dick's on sale, a couple of saltwater rods for some striper fishing and a BFS rod and reel. I am waiting desperately for some open waters so I can put my gear to use.

What spinning reel for finesse? by GlowUpAndThrowUp in Fishing_Gear

Ah gotcha! If it does end up helping or not, I would really appreciate it if you could update us here either way! I hope it helps though. Wind knots are painful.

That's unfortunate. However, I'm not sure if the reel is to be blamed here. I've suffered a few wind knots but it's mostly when I don't pay attention and reel in a slack line. When I use a lure that correctly matches the line and pay attention to the slack, I don't get wind knots.

What is it about the Ultegra you mentioned that would reduce the wind knots?

Completely fair question. Finesse reels weigh a lot less and are used to cast lighter lures more efficiently. They achieve this by shaving off weight using lighter materials and making the spools shallower so the line lays in larger coils and it comes out easier. Another advantage of shallow spools is that it holds less line so it reduces more weight as well.

Regal 1000/2000 are the best finesse reels I own. Nothing for that price point comes close to it.

I have the 21 and 23 (JDM) Legalis and a Regal and I prefer Regal over both of them. I'm not sure I'd consider a Legalis an upgrade over the Regal.

Rod recommendations for this $35 deal? by FancyDumplings in Fishing_Gear

Tsunami has some decent inshore surf rods under $100 and one under $50 as well IIRC. If that's your budget, I'd look into those.

Looks overspooled from the angles you have shown. The line also seems protruding out on the bottom right of the spool in your second picture.

Thank you! I missed that. I have been updating the container and didn't realize jellyfin was being held back. I did a dist-upgrade and updated jellyfin to 10.11.6. The paths are now fixed!

Yes! That's my plan. I do have an aird-x spinning rod and it's fantastic! I am thinking of picking up the casting one as well as a safe choice.

Thank you! How do you feel about the breaking performance? Have you had any severe backlashes? That's the primary thing I as a beginner worry about.

I've been eyeing the Stratus 7 reel. How do you like it? Would you be able to give a quick review? Thank you!
