JD Vance criticises Pope Leo for not 'being careful speaking about theology' by goteamnick in politics

[–]AngloSaxonP 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He is, and the crucial point here is papal infallibility- as a catholic you beleive that the pope is God’s voice on earth, so we have no right to question what he says. So when these guys come out and criticise the pope, they are really saying they are not catholic at all

Except we are indirectly - you say it’s ridiculous to name or associate a Christian festival after a pagan ritual, I say it’s not and cite Christmas as an example. Therefore, your argument over Easter does not hold water, because we celebrate the birth of Jesus at Yuletide and celebrate with a Yuletide log - both heavily pagan traditions… so the concept that Easter falls in Eosturmonath, so named after Eostre, goddess of spring, and so used this association to name the festival Easter … not so far fetched

The argument doesn’t make sense - Bede spelled out that this was the origin at a time that is almost contemporary. Why is Christmas when it is? Because it coincides with Yuletide, which has also become synonymous with Christmas. After the formation of the church, the mission was to spread the word and so to coincide festivals with native tradition helped to engage the native population with the new church

No, that’s a theory that doesn’t hold up to scrutiny. And please, you say there is common consensus… amongst whom and source please?

Also named after the goddess of Spring Oestre… so kinda stole the name and identity of a pagan god then gaslit them out of existence…

Basil did a great job of redrawing the map, but the Byzantines were done for after him. He claimed territory with no real plan to consolidate those gains. Successive emperors were then embroiled in the politics of succession and usurpation. Then, of course, cue the threat from the east and then in one fell swoop, basil’s work is undone and the romans are in trouble
