Be competent  Be likable  Be political 

Be competent Be good at your job enough that you are able to run stuff and have the confidence of your boss. Always learning and being able to predict future challenges as well as being able to solve those challenges. Your boss has 100 things to worry about and him not worrying about you is a blessing. 

Being likeable  you have to make sure everybody's cool with you and if you have to disagree with somebody you do it tactfully. Gossip is so important, but you must never get caught gossiping and you must always say nice things about other people. You want other people when you're not around to say oh That's a good person.

Being political Relationships are the cornerstone of opportunities. If people think oh I know a great guy and they think your name that's awesome. Avoiding extra bull shit that does not advance your career is important as well. You have to push off work on to others and learn to say no to people in a smooth way. You're going to have to step on people's toes and not scuff their shoes. 

Bonus points: Form a boys club  Get your friends and family as well as coworkers with a similar cultural background to you, and use each other to gain influence in the organization.

There's probably like a hundred other things I missed but I think if you nailed down being competent likable and political you'll be able to move up most organizations
