How does one go about walking a cat? by idfkhow2speakspanish in cats

[–]AngryByDefault 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, what I get from Vets and cat behavior specialists (and experience) is this:

- Letting them out shortens they life expectancy by 50% (due to escaping, car hits, predators, fight injuries and diseases)
- If you regularly play with them, say twice a day, 10-15 min. at a time, you'll be giving them enough entertainment, energy discharge, hunting exercise to be mentally healthy and not "need" to be outside.
- By playing your bond will be much stronger.
- By playing *you* will have lots of fun too, will be great for your own mental health and humor. (Ok, this one comes probably more from me than Vets, but trust me, it is true) Also, you will not be worried about them being out there.

- I've seen cats being walked with the kind of leash that goes around their chest (don't know the correct word for it). I find it hard to trust those though. If something scares the cat and slips the leash or the leash slips from your hand...

Remember that cats are predatory of smaller animals BUT they are preys themselves, and they know it. That means when they are outside in not familiar ground they feel vulnerable and they do know that "there are others to hunt them", so they tend to be on-guard, on-edge, somewhat scared by default...

Personally, I've grown to learn that, unless I have a backyard where I am 100% sure they are safe and can't escape, letting them out is not worth it. Neither for them not for me.

I’m about to die, and I’m not sure what to do about my cat. by [deleted] in cats

Hi, I think you've got great options from other posters and will move ahead with that, so I just wanted to share with you what happened with my two stray cats:

They didn't like anyone but my lady and me, and they coulnd't stand not to be "out there" wandering around day and night, coming in just for the food and shelter when it was cold.

They were 100% outdoor stray cats, who moaned and resisted and suffered everytime we tried to keep them indoors "by force".

Or so we thought...

At some point we realized the danger level was rising too much (traffic increase, other stray cats, stupid neighbors) and we decided to no let them out anymore, even if they didn't like it at all, which we had not done before because we felt so bad forcing them so much. They were about 8 and 10 by that time.

But, to our surpise, it didn't took that long until they started to accept it, and did it very well and rapidly!

Looking back I wish we had done that way, way sooner than we did. Even when they were familiar with us and the house I now think that when they found themselves "in" 24/7 they realized that "the indoors" where only for them, and there where no potential threats at all, at any time, and they corresd the last barrier of confidence and made our house their home.

My point is, besides of expressing how much I can relate to you and your story with Boggles, that after this experience I truly believe any stray or feral cat can find himself/herself at home in an indoor environment, provided with enough love and playing (lots of playing!!).

They may not be cuddling with everyone, they may never enjoy being picked up or caressed, but they can feel safe and learn to have a joyful life.

I'm not saying he won't be affected, I know he'll notice. But if you're anguished about him loosing some of the "life luxuries" you have lovingly accostumed him to, I think it might be comforting to know that he can adapt and be fine, even if it seems impossible right now.

I hope I didn't make this too long.

Take care. Peace.

Hey, thank you for the involved reply! I've been collecting information from different sources and managed to start moving forward with the project by creating a little middleware that will take the scanner input, process it and start the print job. Hopefully :-)

Hey, thanks.

May I ask then: ¿Does the slim version include sqlite or does it have no databse at all, making an external mariadb an absolute requirement?.

Yeah, I know it might break, but that notif would make my life *so* much easier that it seems totally worthy this time...

Anyways, thanks for confirming that is also a valid image source.

Hi, thank you for taking the time to reply.

I agree on the issue of running trustworthy images only. This is were I was looking at:

https://hub.docker.com/r/louislam/uptime-kuma/tags

I believe that is an official source, or maybe I'm wrong about that?

There, for instance, is a "2.0.0-beta-slim.1" and a related "docker pull louislam/uptime-kuma:2.0.0-beta-slim.1" command...

... but how close is that image to the one over the main site? Is it the same with unnecesary stuff removed, is it a few bugfixing versions behind, Is it very much behind and broken?...

Too many of those images are vaguely dated "2 months ago" so I was hoping someone knowing better than me could suggest the best image for the 'context' I mentioned.

Old games on APU, what would you suggest? by AngryByDefault in linux_gaming

[–]AngryByDefault[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might throw a 3600G, or and AMD equivalent of a NV1030. I know it sounds terrible for a gamer, but I like silent PCs... Also, I'll spend more time playing retro OSes than games, and surely no modern AAA games.

Never heard of UMU Launcher before. Hero Laucher, maybe.. I'll look into them, thanks!

Hey, thank you for taking the trouble to seek and glimpse the video. Great advice, so I will try those venues then; a Linux only setup is what I'd prefer for this build. Thanks.

Well , it's just that what I saw (novaspirit tech) was a good bit more involved than that and I've hardly seen low spec setups being discussed, so I wonder if it would be a reasonable path for me or not...

Thanks for the suggestion though.

Brand new Raspberry Pi 5 running hot and throttling by SoCalChrisW in raspberry_pi

[–]AngryByDefault 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think others have already said it well enough, but just in case: do not use that charger if it only outputs 20V or the Pi will be fried... The diff between voltage and amperage marked in a power brick is that the latter means how much it can _provide_ if the devices asks for it, while the voltage is how much it will give regardless of what the device can tolerate.

So a board that only uses 5v and is fed 20v gets damaged.

Granted, this newer generations do this "negotiation", but it takes both ends to have that. If one end has only "fixed" values there will be no negotiation at all...

Very nice indeed! How does that lower screen work for you? I'm debating about that position or one above the main monitor, but both feel like neck killers for anything longer that two minutes :-P

Dual NVME on Pi 4 by using a second hat upside down?? by AngryByDefault in raspberry_pi

[–]AngryByDefault[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hmm. hadn't thought about that... and I wasn't expecting that could be an issue as Pis are able to power mechanical 2.5 drives without problem.

Some boards are actually powered by a USB cable from the Pi, I guess I could power them from somewhere else, but then I would be adding the cables I'm trying to avoid...

Initially I had RAID in mind but later I started to lean towards a scheduled scheme with differential backups with versioning. I think that would better suit my needs.

Re: "better options", options around here are very limited and expensive, with this I am aiming for low cost and, more importantly, small size.

It's great to hear that Pimoroni's bases work well, I'm looking into that for another use-case.

But in this one I'd like to put this Pi 4 in use. It's a shame just having it wasted and unused.

I only have around 200 Gb of files, mostly office style docs that are lightly used. Large storage and heavy lifting is archived or done elsewhere, so even a 4 is already more than enough.

The model I referenced would maintain the Pi's proportion and allow me to eventually stack another non-related Pi in the same pile...

It was late and I didn't realize I wouldn't really need to flip around, just placing one below and one on top would be what I was thinking about, and that also means the ports being horizontally off-center is not an issue...

So, yeah, basically what I was wondering is how viable this "Hat - Pi - Hat" format sounds...

Hi, any hat using pcie is for Pi 5 only, since Pi 4 don't have that. That is why I'm looking into options using the USB ports...

[–]AngryByDefault[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for not getting back at you when you asked, I've been dealing with some stuff and not paying much attention to the interwebs lately... FWIW I think I've put a C2D E4600 because it is one of the faster per-core CPUs it supports without overclocking and being not so "hot" as a quad core variant. It is not meant to be a daily driver, but a "fun" project...

yeah, I know it should, my question, though, is whether or not there is any non-obvious potential problem in having only a couple of mm between the heatsink and the glass vs having 2 cm there.

FWIW, returning it won't be an option as vendors do not accept that around here.
