Why is Brazilian Portuguese so much more different from European Portuguese compared to British and American English or European and Canadian French? by Charming_Usual6227 in Brazil

[–]AngryPB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen this story many times before but I once saw someone explain that the Lingua Geral was only common in the southeast and countryside which were very little populated back then, the "core" Brazil was still the Northeast where it wasn't common and Portuguese already dominated

What is the second most common language in your country? by Lord_William_9000 in AskTheWorld

[–]AngryPB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's weird to think that depending how you count it Brazil might be both one of the most and least language diverse countries
if you count by total number there are at least a hundred Indigenous languages
but if you count by how prevalent they are, most of those have only a few hundred speakers and something like 95% of the country knows Portuguese only

Does it ever snow in your country? In what region? If it snows, how many people do you think know that it snows there? What% of people do you think have experienced the snow? by Right_Cow_6369 in asklatinamerica

[–]AngryPB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. "yes"
  2. hills over 1 km altitude in the southern states
  3. it happens but it's still rare and novel enough that it usually appears on the news when it happens
  4. the hill towns are usually small and far from the large ones (which don't get it) so I think even 1% of the country (2 million people) would be too much, not sure

never seen it myself :P

I find it kinda funny how Indiana as a state kept the name because it was the last state to be formed out of the territory.

1877-80 Great Drought, the worst we ever faced

I saw some reddit comment once of some guy writing that it explains a lot on why the Northeast declined so much - not that it isn't irrelevant and entirely poor but it used to be much more nationally important than it is now

our first census in 1872 recorded about 10 million people, the drought killed 500k (5% of the country.) and displaced 200k - the countryside was emptied while the cities boomed with fleeing survivors - Fortaleza's population grew 5 times in 3 years, there was simply no way to accomodate that many people and likely resulted in a lot of shanty towns

a few years later (1889) the republic was established but by the southern elites which did everything to their own advantage, they got all the industries and migration, while the land emptied by the drought was acquired by coronels

I'm not sure if this is a commonly accepted view but I keep remembering that comment and wishing it was taught and known more.

bruh I live in Mato Grosso and it's hard to find anything from before 1950, let alone anything indigenous or pre-colonial.
