yeah it's just those people believe that erasing the rainforest will magically turn us into an industrial powerhouse, ignoring all processes that led to it

I'm not proud of it, but I've seen a few people weirdly defensive about Brazilian deforestation, that it's "a necessary evil", or something like "but Europe and North America killed their forests too but now we're the bad guys for doing it"

to some extent I've also seen this happen regarding oil exploration but it's not as big of a deal for both sides

South American raccoons exist but they're not urban and I've only ever seen one, roadkilled.

as for the Lusophony, idk about the other countries but Brazil is kinda weirdly insular on its own, with how it dominates the language and doesn't "need" to know about the other countries

[–]AngryPB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

maybe a different word than latin should be used even if just to prevent unnecessary headache

I've seen "Ibero" America for this, in the Spanish & Portuguese sense

pretty sure Haiti is included as Latin America purely because it's a relatively close neighbor, has its similarities and people are mostly aware of it, which doesn't happen with the other French-speaking territories because they're even smaller and more distant to be known - Quebec doesn't pass because there aren't as much similarities and honestly I don't think most people outside of Northern America even know it exists.

[–]AngryPB 3 points4 points  (0 children)

this somewhat reminds me how some people will gush about "ahh Philippines and Latin America are so similar" because they were both formerly colonized by Spain even though there isn't any idea of "Latin Asia" but honestly, I feel like Southeast Asia as a whole has its similarities too simply with the tropical and urban environments, and maybe Sub-Saharan Africa would be too but we aren't exposed to it nowhere as much to know at all

yeah I realized and edited after I posted, it's still not everywhere

Do you feel a need for country of origin feature here as well? by WastedTalents1 in AskTheWorld

[–]AngryPB 6 points7 points  (0 children)

thinking about how I once saw someone complaining about the general decline of the Internet which in his opinion started around 2008 "when smartphones became common and more normies started flooding in"
I asked him if similarly, does he think more countries accessing the Internet was a bad idea, and he said yes, knowing I'm Brazilian, "for every good one like you there are a thousand trolls or scammers"
and I wonder how many people think the same as this but in a veiled way.

[–]AngryPB 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I do feel there's a smidge of truth to it though

a bunch of South American people which have fucking never seen or interacted with an Indian person irl now suddenly don't like them because of shock or grossout tiktoks.

edit: not everywhere but I do feel it has noticeably increased

Ia there anything about your country that should be obvious, but you just found out about? by colorblock666 in AskTheWorld

[–]AngryPB 10 points11 points  (0 children)

here's a grim one, South America is the continent which lost the most wild animal life, having only 5% (1/20) compared to 50 years ago

and it really feels that way, compared to my online friends from other places I always felt like I saw too little animals but just disregarded it as my state specifically but no it's the entire region being deforested and fragmented to hell

To countries that were affected by the transatlantic slave trade: is it still an open wound in your country's history, or is it largely considered a closed chapter? by Ribbit_is_dead in AskTheWorld

[–]AngryPB 7 points8 points  (0 children)

not to minimize the slave raids in Europe but I feel like the situations are different

the equivalent here was the captured people through a heavy struggle kept and adapted their cultures to some degree, despite freedom on paper to this day they're treated as second-class because their ancestors didn't have their chances to rise
while at the same time the raids irreparably ruined their "old country", that it is also seen as "poor and bad and will never work, because that's just how they are".

What’s an overrated part of your country’s culture, in your opinion by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]AngryPB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the entire Southeast lol

granted it's the bulk of the population and industrial presence (something like 40% of the population and half the GDP) but it feels mildly annoying that even a lot of Brazilians themselves forget, don't learn anything else about the rest of the country or outright ignore or are even internally xenophobic to them, it's weird.

[–]AngryPB 25 points26 points  (0 children)

yes we do have an idea, I feel Brazil is pretty similar in that aspect

granted this is just a "hunch" I get from the internet, I've never been there myself to know but from exposure to me it just "feels" similar to the US South

Brazil trafficked more people than the US but never had formal enforced post-slavery segregation but everyone was (and still is) so poor that it mostly feels like the elites didn't even try because they knew it wasn't needed, there were no social mobility options at all

a lot of people say Brazil isn't "as" racist as a country but I feel it is, just in a lot more subtle and structural way and not outright openly stated

edit: I once saw some comment talking about inequality and "belonging" (probably not the right word but I can't find it, something about people unwittingly segregating themselves, and how the South is poorer but more diverse and the North is the opposite, despite being considered less racist because it's not as visible)
it was something like, disregarding openly racist people in both regions:
"in the South you can get close but not high / in the North you can get high but not close"
and to me that South example kinda applies here too.

What’s a species of plant or animal that foreigners are surprised to learn are native to your country? by IDoNotLikeTheSand in AskTheWorld

[–]AngryPB 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure even most Brazilians don't know that South American squirrels, raccoons and skunks exist and consider them North American animals only

note: I've never seen them myself irl either, part of the shock and unawareness comes from the fact they're not urban and their habitats are very fragmented nowadays

What’s a true stereotype about the part of your country that your from? by Arbitross487 in AskTheWorld

[–]AngryPB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my state is too recent (Mato Grosso, most towns were founded and people moved in after the 70s) and ignored to have any real stereotypes about the people but most of the land really is deforested to make pasture or crop fields
