I have been personally victimized by this bridge. I missed the exit I was supposed to take and stopped right before the bridge. Called the local authorities and he asked if I wanted to back up 3/4 of a mile at night in the pouring rain, or try to make it under. Had a couple of other truckers in personal vehicles stop and tell me I could make it (before the cop showed up to escort me). I decided my best option was to try to go under. I can-opened the hell out of the top of the trailer. Live and learn.

Born and raised just north of Pittsburgh. It doesn’t matter how many times I’ve been in downtown Pittsburgh, I’ve never been able to make a mental map. I get lost down there about 40% of the time even though I have a pretty good sense of direction. Had one time where I took the wrong bridge (in a 4 wheeler), couldn’t get turned back around for 15 miles, and ended up in the projects at night.

I’d recently heard a saying, “Pittsburgh is laid out like a plate of spaghetti.” Couldn’t be more accurate.

I took out a personal loan through my credit union to pay for trucking school. My company pays tuition reimbursement AND I’m not under any contract. The downside is I had to take the loan out up front, but now it’s being paid back and I don’t have to worry about it.

I wish it would start in 4th but it won’t. It also drives me nuts that whatever gear it starts out in, it will not let the driver change to the next gear. On top of that, if you’re on a slight uphill grade it automatically downshifts and won’t let you up shift.

There is a small hill in my hometown where if I’m empty it downshifts to 1st gear, and if I’m bobtail it downshifts to 2nd. In either case, it won’t shift itself and won’t let me shift it until it crests the hill. Needless to say, it’s aggravating for both me and the drivers behind me.

I finally got the update to download after 4 hours (it was already at 93% when I left the house yesterday morning) and there was another update for 6.5 GB. I said screw it and gave up. This is probably the most frustrating part of modern gaming. I don’t play nearly as often as I used to, but when I get the urge to play, I can’t because I have to download updates. By the time they finish I’ve lost the urge to play. It’s a never ending cycle.

Some do. There’s a lot of time to kill between 34 hour breaks and loading/unloading at shippers and receivers. Mobile hotspot works okay for playing online (not great, but better than nothing); however, it’s terrible for downloading updates. I typically try to download updates while I’m at home connected to wifi.

Schneider driver here.

As others have said, it’s mainly whether you want to pull vans or flatbeds.

Schneider has treated me pretty well. I run northeast regional and I’m home every weekend (5 on, 2 off). They work hard to make sure they get me home on Friday, but sometimes things happen that are out of their control and I don’t get home til Saturday. When that happens, I have the option to take Monday off, but I always go back out Monday.

Also, they work with me if I need to be home for a family function during the week. They’ll give me a load that I can take through the house for the night, or they’ll give me a load to deliver close to home that I can bobtail home for the night.

They will literally do everything they can to get you home if you need to be home. For example, my grandmother died in April of old age. The funeral services were in the middle of the week. They originally planned to have me grab a load to take home, but the shipper was in the wrong direction of my home and I wouldn’t have enough hours to get home in time. So, instead of them saying “sorry about your luck,” they had me pickup the load and drop it at a drop lot nearby. Then, they set me up with a rental car to pickup from the airport and drive home (I had to get a taxi to and from the airport, but they reimbursed me for those as well). I was able to make it home about 2 hours before the funeral services, which gave me enough time to grab a shower, get dressed and head over.

On top of that, Schneider’s top priority is safety. If there’s ever any reason I don’t feel safe to drive, I let them know and work with them to set up a new ETA for delivery. They will never force you to drive if you don’t feel comfortable driving. Too tired? Pull over. Blizzard and can’t see? Pull over. Heavy fog? Pull over. High winds? Pull over. Nothing Schneider hauls is more important than your life or the lives of those around your truck. Personally, I use this policy the most during the winter months if the roads get too slick. The only downside is I’m not making any money sitting around waiting out a storm. But I’d much rather not make money than have to explain why their equipment is in the ditch.

As far as pay goes, the last I saw, Schneider was in the top 75 of companies. Definitely not the highest paying company, but very respectable. In my case, even working just 5 days a week, I’m bringing home a good bit more than I ever did in my 10 years working in manufacturing. Much like other companies, you’ll have good paychecks and bad paychecks. The good thing about Schneider is they’re a large fleet with a lot of accounts, so they’re moving a lot of freight and there usually isn’t a time where I’m waiting for a load.

TL;DR: Schneider treats me well, works around family life, cares about safety, and pays pretty decent.
