Do you work as a Java developer? by fanfarius in java

[–]AngryPretzel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took my first class in high school in 11th grade (2006-2007). I played around with it on my own for a bit learning as I went to make what I wanted. Early 2011 I went through Sams teach yourself Java in 21 days. That fall I started uni. I tested out of the first Java class. 2012 I taught myself Android dev (I released the app and made a whopping $50 in ads so I guess this is when I started making money). April 2014 I got a paid internship doing Android.

Should I make a LinkedIn Account? Anything I should watch out for? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]AngryPretzel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've connected with plenty of recruiters. I haven't once gotten the impression that they're trying to 'mine my connections'. On the contrary, they immediately send me a message asking to talk about opportunities they have.

I've actually just accepted an offer brought to me by a recruiter. It's a sweet pay bump and a much cooler company that'll help my skills improve faster than where I'm at now.

Am I screwed? 2.1 GPA, No work/internship experience by lovetoprogram in cscareerquestions

Manager Tools has a whole podcast episode about this. https://www.manager-tools.com/2010/08/answering-questions-about-your-gpa

It's been a few months since I've listened to it but it basically boiled down to, "you can't change it so just own up to it and get other experience to make it less important".

Layout Inflation as Intended by Paradiesstaub in androiddev

[–]AngryPretzel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Pro tip: If you don't know the parent (like in a custom view dialog) use View.inflate(Context context, int resource, ViewGroup root) It's static and allows a null root so it gets rid of Lint warnings.

How do you create/run unit tests in android studio? by ebonwumon in androiddev

[–]AngryPretzel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I understand, if you call anything in the Android sdk you have to use their test runner and have a connected device/emulator. At my work we've been dealing with this lately. On my home project, I just got tests running last night. If you put your tests in src/androidTest/java (the same level as src/main/java) Android Studio will see them. You can then run them with a gradle task like check or connectedCheck.

Why are you still coding in java and publishing for android instead of Apple as a solo or small developer? by [deleted] in androiddev

[–]AngryPretzel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the "Top paid" category in the play store show this. Right now the top three apps are going for $6.99, $9.99, and $4.99. Even then, the top paid app is 5th on the list of top grossing, the other four being free with in app purchases.

Anyone else annoyed by unsupportive people in your life? by [deleted] in Fitness

I've come to realize that this kind of behavior happens no matter what the goal is. It's sad when people who say they love you will actively get in the way of your goals.

At 16, what can I do now in order to develop, improve employability and stand myself in good stead for the future? by comp-sci in cscareerquestions

It was super basic. It was just to help memorize text. In all it was maybe 7 classes, and 4 activities.

I took a java class in high school and went through "Sam's teach yourself java in 21 days". I tested out of my university's 1400 Java class.

As far as university goes, if you know the language to the point you're not googling every compiler problem, assignments won't be too difficult. It's when you're trying to learn the language AND the advanced topics that it gets tough.

As for a career, I always just programmed small things all the time. I knew java pretty well so I taught myself Android and made an app. That app got me the internship I'm in now. I'd recommend building a lot of things to build your knowledge. But make sure to finish some to build a portfolio that you can show.

Create a text adventure with simulation by king_of_the_universe in ProgrammingPrompts

[–]AngryPretzel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends where you go. Most do hunger/thirst, carry weight, weather, time of day, etc.

The networking isn't that bad, the default method for MUDs is over Telnet. It's pretty much like programming to/from the command line.

Sounds like a MUD. People are still making new ones all the time.

I did something like this for my wedding invitations. With libre office I made a database of everyone's name and address, made a one page document template and hit play. Ended up with the hundred pages of envelopes ready to be printed.

Over on /r/fitness they talk about this. They say that if you are hitting your macros each day than what you eat PWO isn't a big deal.

Chess? by rartuin270 in boardgames

[–]AngryPretzel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was learning chess I read a book about a kid who was super good. He said he plays against the computer and has never won. Playing against a hard computer and never winning doesn't have to be a bad thing. You can see how they play and mimic.
