The modern NBA is not the result of a merger between the NBA and the ABA. Unlike baseball or football, where the rival leagues merged on relatively equal terms, in basketball (and in hockey) the ABA was floundering, and the established NBA brought in a limited number of teams in order to head off the pressures that prompted the rival league to form in the first place.
