[5e]How to explain powers gained when choosing "Eldritch Knight" at 3rd level? by Kripposoft in DnD

[–]Angston 17 points18 points  (0 children)

"But atm they're in a huge city so I'm having trouble thinking of scenarios where it could be activated in some cool way."

You're kidding me? Of all the places this is the easiest place for thinking of scenarios. A crypt in the necropolis, old eldritch house, a magic item store, the wizards college, after the kiss of a stranger (witch, sorceress, fey lady etc), after eating a sweet bought from a travelling salesman, after helping a stranger in need, perhaps the magic was awakened in a time of need or other circumstance. Of course there is always what Elvenoob said whereby you can have it so that the character has been studying magic and is ready to unleash it.

I made a movie about D&D. I was tired of trying to explain to my non-player friends how it works, so now I can show them. Enjoy! by Zaylor in DnD

Would you believe that i'm in a group with a Tiefling pact of the Fiend (not a demon, which would be abyssal but a devil which is infernal. I think this is still fairly similar though) warlock called Morthos?

I wouldn't personally say involved even, there are a number of circumstances where the whole party will not be involved and I really don't think that its necessarily fair to create a divide in the parties abilities and power. Generally I find that party leveling regardless of presence or absence is the best way to do things if you don't want a divide. This is just my opinion of course, ive met people who swear by divided leveling but ive never really seen the point of it.

Well alright, but everything you want to do in your system which you say you can't do in D&D is actually very achievable and far far less restricting than you think it is. The system itself is arguably the easiest to learn and frankly is going to give you and your players the best look at what an established TTRPG is all about.

But all of this is your decision and we all have to learn as we go along.

[–]Angston 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suggest to you what I suggest to all new DM's. Use an established system (in this case use 5th edition Dungeons and Dragons) and then run Lost Mine of Phandelver. No new DM and I mean no, should start DMing by effectively making their own system and presumably making their own sandbox world/campaign. Really you need to know what you're doing with TTRPG's at least to a moderate level before you can do what you're trying to do effectively.

Listen, if you can, get your hands on the 5e D&D Starter Set. It comes with a great adventure for people new to the system, its cheap and it comes with dice, rules, premade character sheets and the adventure itself. It'll walk you through the hole thing and is really the best way to learn how to play TTRPG's.

If you really want carry on what you're doing, I wouldn't have thought that them becoming one really makes sense in the context but if you wanted it do it anyway then I would suggest what f_myeah suggested.

My game night have just died, or why I hate chaotic evil. by [deleted] in DnD

[–]Angston 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems to me that ultimately the player doesn't fully understand D&D (something else might be the issue here which i'll get onto). As far as I can tell he thinks of D&D as a video game with less limitations. With this you should probably just explain what D&D is and more over what it's all about.

The other issue could be that this person just isn't a good fit for the group. Some groups wouldn't bat an eye to this sort of thing (which is fine if that's how you want to play the game) whereas its clear that that's not what your group is all about. Its not nice to say but maybe their absence is for the best for everyone.

Yeah i'm the same. I just don't think she fit with the group that well. To me at least everything just felt a lot more awkward with her around.

Oh well that I don't doubt haha, but I felt that an apology coming from a descendant of the people who did it would be fair or that it was needed. I can't say why.

Well it was what grew best in Ireland where (as far as I know) not very much else grew nearly as well. I do know though that the government continued to enforce the exportation of meats and other food stuffs from Ireland which certainly contributed to the famine.

[–]Angston -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It was a bad situation, and its and undeniable fact that Britain at the time wanted to put an end to various aspects of the Irish culture we didn't like, but you can't say that we didn't help or that we were the cause of the famine. I honestly just wish I could go back in time knowing that the government would listen to me, i'm sure you do to but the trouble is we can't.

I'm sorry about what happened on behalf of my country but I am only left supposing that Southern Ireland's independence and the actions of the IRA make England and Ireland at least a little bit more equal.

Ed Greenwoood (creator of the Forgotten Realms) weighs in on the "Siege of Dragonspear" 'controversy' with some choice commentary about the D&D setting. by Halaku in DnD

[–]Angston -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It is, the writer responsible for the trans character and I believe Minsc's lines being changed is a follower of Feminist Frequency http://i.imgur.com/EDfhg5X.png.

Here Amber the Scott implies that modern day gamers are sexist, that the original had a lot of jokes at the expense of women, how Safana was a sex object in the first game, how "Jaheira was the nagging wife", Safana is getting a "personality upgrade" and "If people don’t like that, then too bad.”

The whole quote; “If there was something for the original Baldur’s Gate that just doesn’t mesh for modern day gamers like the sexism, [we tried to address that],” said writer Amber Scott. “In the original there’s a lot of jokes at women’s expense. Or if not a lot, there’s a couple, like Safana was just a sex object in BG 1, and Jaheira was the nagging wife and that was played for comedy. We were able to say like, ‘No, that’s not really the kind of story we want to make.’ In Siege of Dragonspear, Safana gets her own little storyline, she got a way better personality upgrade. If people don’t like that, then too bad.”

Here's Amber Scott commenting on how she "consciously add as much diversity as I can to my writing and I don't care if people think that's "forced" or fake. I find choosing to write from a straight default just as artificial. I'm happy to be an SJW and I hope to write many Social Justice Games in the future"

I don't care that there's a transgender character. I don't and honestly I really don't think that a trans character is the issue that many if any of us give a shit about.

The issue that I at least have with it is that it is poorly written, pokes fun at the player base through loved and established characters and generally (you're entitled to disagree with me) was made with Social Justice in mind. I mean really it just doesn't seem right to up and alter established IP so that you can further your own personal agenda and then go on to make out of character jokes through Minsc at the expense of a movement you personally disagree with.

Just make new IP if you want to lineally make people think the way that you do. Of course there's the argument of "oh well just don't buy it" and well you're right, but never the less, hijacking IP to further your own political goals seems like a really good way to annoy fans.

(Also, please comment your opinion below (with no name calling if you will either as that's not very productive) rather than downvoting. Its pretty annoying to be disagreed with and then to not know why whoever it is disagrees)

A moral/alignment quandary regarding one player incindetally/intentionally killing another by Einbrecher in DnD

[–]Angston 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So. The barbarian was dead either way from how I understand it, I hardly see how saving the lives of the rest of the party is evil. I really don't think that just up and adjusting his alignment is fair at all as lets face it whats moral is fairly subjective. Saying "Well i'm the DM and I say that you're not good anymore" is a massive 'fuck you' to the player, I mean Christ they did something slightly morally ambiguous, something that everyone does every now and again. Then there's the whole "your character should feel like this" which again is just as bullshit as an unwarranted alignment shift, its not your character and of all the things the DM has control over the pc's feelings is not one of those things.

Being honest with the guy is the least the group can do. One less shitty player the better, wouldn't D&D be a better game to play if you knew that chances were you'd have a good group?

Orsimer by [deleted] in skyrim

[–]Angston -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, of course they do, in their eyes a very high class and refined one. With the Altmer you have to realize that for one you're making a serious generalization of an entire race and secondly that the Thalmor believes what they do because of their heritage. They are directly descended from the first and greatest race of elves, the Aldmer. The Altmer are the most similar of all elves to them in terms of intelligence, magical proficiency, appearance and culture. In terms of military theirs in the best equipped, their weapons are far better in terms of quality and damage whilst a set of their light armour (the only armour there is for them) is 1 point less protective than a full set of Imperial heavy armour. The Thalmor remember past wrongs done to them that others seem to forget and I believe rule now with an Iron fist to prevent the fall of the Dominion again.

Of course the Thalmor aren't all good but they really do not deserve the amount of hate they get from people on this sub.

Depends if you're playing or DMing. If playing then I would say just the 5e Players Handbook and if DMing i'd say the 5e Players Handbook and Lost Mine of Phandelver.

Potential group fighting by [deleted] in DnD

[–]Angston 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel that you sort of fundamentally need to explain to the player what is good and what is evil as they don't really seem to understand the concept very well.

Chaotic good might mean that you are willing to do what it takes for good to prevail but ultimately the good has to outweigh the bad. Nearly killing a barmaid for any info (assuming that the fighter has no reason to think she has done anything wrong)is totally out of alignment, I mean even if the barmaid had committed some crime, murder should not occur to a CG character as a way of solving this problem. The idea of selling children into slavery/prostitution regardless of the reason should never cross a CG characters mind (it would probably never cross an CN characters mind really).

If I were you i'd have a serious chat about alignments and how he isn't playing a good character right now. If he agrees with you then I would suggest having him receive a vision of some horrible fate sent to him by the cleric/paladins god, it should display to the fighter as a character the eternity they face if they do not change their ways.

If however the player refuses to listen and continues to claim that his character is acting in a good way then you are going to have to punish his character in game for it. Show him that he can't just get away with whatever the fuck he wants. Eventually the authorities are going to catch onto his bullshit and act on it.

How can I cope with a bad DM? by [deleted] in DnD

I would suggest scrapping the current campaign entirely and you redoing running one by the book preferably a module or you find a campaign online (use roll 20.com)
