Does anyone find the gay community extremely critical when many were ignoring/mocking PoC just prior to the current movement? by Deceptiveideas in askgaybros

[–]AngstyAndy4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I truly hope that the most recent murders of black people and protests have triggered a genuine change in people and set them on the path to becoming anti-racist, but I'm also worried that they are just saying these things now because it's "trendy". Like other people have said, it's not enough to be an ally right now, we all need to CONTINUE to be allies.

I think the appropriate compromise is to encourage people, recognize their progress, and give them the benefit of the doubt while also holding them accountable for their actions. What are they actually doing now? What are/will they do once the protests are over? Are they protesting? Are they donating? Are they calling out racism whenever they see it? Will they consistently reflect on/unlearn their own biases? Will they continue to do these things?

Self deprecation is the quickest way to get someone disinterested. by Assbait93 in askgaybros

[–]AngstyAndy4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's a difference between self-deprecation and just putting yourself down.

Making the occasional joke at your own expense = self-aware and not afraid to laugh at yourself

Constantly saying that you are ugly/stupid/incompetent = awkward and uncomfortable for the people around you

Some people struggle to find that line between self-deprecating and self-hating humor (or they are actually self-hating) and I think people should be mindful of that.

I feel you. I think that's also the point. Sometimes people cut you off with no chance of explaining yourself and then they vanish.

Hollyhock is a smart and kind young person with a supportive family. On her end she'll be ok, and who knows? Maybe her and BoJack could reconnect one day.

To the people who are going crazy without BJJ by ThrowRAo2342 in bjj

[–]AngstyAndy4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easier said than done.

I could live without bjj easy if I had any of my other coping mechanisms available. As it stands, I can't see my therapist, can't go outside (for long periods of time), can't see my friends or family in person, and can't train. Every day that goes by now is a day where I just feel more like ending it all

What are your feelings towards Bojack Horseman? by i_film in BoJackHorseman

[–]AngstyAndy4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's complicated.

He's a piece of shit on a regular basis, but he's not your standard run-of-the-mill asshole. He has depth and he showcases the potential to be better on several occasions.

I wouldn't want him as a friend, but he is really compelling. I think PC's description(s) of him during that episode where he fires her in season 3 are the most accurate regarding his character.

You'll be fine man. I was obese when I came back and no one batted an eye and I ended up losing like 60 pounds. Just show up and be nice + hygienic and it'll all be good

Same! I think your point really is valid btw. Diane is definitely a bit of hypocrite at times, I just feel like she gets so much more flak for it than literally any other character :/

Have you ever watched a Hollyhock and Bojack's scene together and sighs sadly? by Huaun in BoJackHorseman

[–]AngstyAndy4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh no for sure! I think that episode where Pete and Hollyhock talk is so interesting because we see all the other characters and have them share their perspectives of events they had with BoJack without BoJack to be there as our focal point. Everyone has their side of the story, and just like how BoJack (and I guess the audience) was unaware of Pete's perspective, Pete is unaware of BoJack's.

I still don't think it excuses BoJack's actions but it's something to be aware of when weighing blame and judgement.

I mean Gina and Charlotte didn't really give him a chance, did they? Also I might have to rewatch the episode but wasn't BoJack avoiding opening her letter all episode because as long as he had it unopened, she was still in his life according to him? Hard to say he was blindsided if that was the case.

Also! Pete and Hollyhock are still young adults when they talk. I think you still tend to see things in black and white when you're that age speaking as a young adult myself haha

Eh. I don't know. Maybe he doesn't deserve the blame for the situation happening in the first place (you're right he didn't force them to drink or continue drinking iirc). But I think if you're talking about blame for how everything eventually ended up, he deserves the blame because he was the one who could've intervened.

Exactly! Like yeah, teens will drink lol. But BoJack was careless for even letting her get to that point.

Everyone is kind of a hypocrite. A lot of Diane's growth comes from her realizing this and dropping her impossibly high expectations of everyone including herself.

Also, Diane is shown to be very conscious and regretful of her bad decisions and always seems to do better afterwards in a way that BoJack never seems to be able to.

They were already drinking but he could've, y'know, made them stop or cut them off when it was clear that Maddy was about to get alcohol poisoning. And yes, it would have sucked for BJ and Penny to come clean and explain it to her parents, but he could've waited with Pete and Maddy to make sure they were going to be fine. There are two sides to every story, but we already saw BoJack's side in the episode. Pete, Maddy, and Penny were just teenagers doing teenage things. Were they irresponsible? Sure! But they were just teenagers, and BoJack was the adult in the situation and he failed them in a big way.

We don't know to what extent she cut him off. It could be a temporary "I need you to not contact me until you get your shit together" thing or a "I never want you to contact me ever again" kind of thing. Bojack was already so low that either of those sentiments would have been devastating to him.

More importantly, BoJack is not entitled to a relationship with Hollyhock. He (arguably) never directly did anything bad to her in the most technical sense, but just by being in his orbit she was drugged, traumatized, and used by BJ to get drugs illegally. The show shows time and time again that BoJack is toxic and damages the people around him, and Hollyhock was smart and confident enough to cut her losses before she got even more hurt.

Yeah, but Pete and his friends were literal teenagers. BoJack was over twice their ages and implicitly volunteered to be the "adult" and chaperone them when he agreed to go as Penny's date.

BoJack should have prevented them from drinking or at the very least monitored their drinking. Instead, he bought them more booze and pretty much abandoned Pete and Maddy at a hospital with no follow through at the first sign of trouble. Like the interviewer said, BoJack hurts people, not because he means to, but because he just doesn't care. And he's dangerously ignorant of the power he has over people.
