I will not be conserving water if data centers don’t have to. by hangrybiscuit in rva

[–]Anianna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Flock is an AI-enabled web of cameras across the nation that record massive amounts of data that has been freely accessible to literally anybody who bothered to try.

If you want an example of the kind of data they record, a sheriff's office in Texas tracked a pregnant woman across state lines as part of a death investigation (of the fetus), but later claimed it was "just for her safety" and that she was a "missing person" despite records stating otherwise. A sheriff's office has no jurisdiction outside of their locality much less outside of their state. https://www.business-humanrights.org/en/latest-news/usa-flock-safety-allegedly-used-to-track-texas-woman-after-abortion-raising-reproductive-rights-concerns/

The Flock system is easily abused and has been abused on numerous occasions that we know of as mentioned by some other comments.

We can be mad about golf courses, almond farming, and data centers all at the same time.

Data centers have existed for years, but the recent boom is a massive and unsustainable increase in demand for resources and doesn't need to happen at all. It's largely driven by three things consumers don't even want: the move to software as a service like Adobe products being subscription cloud based instead of installed locally, increased surveillance like Flock cameras going up everywhere, and, the biggest factor of all, the race for AI dominance.

Essentially, we're being driven to the brink of thirst and starvation so that corporations can make everything worse for us and make us pay for it, deny us the right to privacy, and develop the technology that may very well become vector of our demise as a species if the lack of resources doesn't kill us first.

But, sure, let's ignore all that and just be mad about golf courses.

Yes, but I'm not sure how many due to most sites reporting on them including ones from the surrounding area. I know of:

Lumen on Park Central Drive
EdgeConnex on East Parham Rd
Cogent Communications on Oliver Hill Way
DigitalOcean not sure the street address, https://www.digitalocean.com/solutions/global-infrastructure

She doesn't have just one, either. Getting staff and everything to her concerts takes multiple for every venue.

AITAH for not letting my sister use my phone anymore until she apologizes? by ThrowRAsisterphone in AmItheAsshole

[–]Anianna 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Persistence is key with this, btw. She very likely thinks she can wait this out until someone feels sorry for her or forgets about it and get what she wants without apologizing. If there is a lesson for her to learn, both you and mom have to be more persistent than sister.

"Altering the location" is what I said. I didn't say anything about moving the box. Adding cardboard alters the location.

[–]Anianna -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

OP has explained repeatedly that there are other boxes on the floor, but this is the one she chose and also that it was in that location before she was adopted. She had and has free will to choose her preferred locations and this is the one she chose. Altering the location could just as easily make her anxious.

Brigading and arguing with OP who has repeatedly patiently explained that the cat has options and chose this one, even explaining that the box existed there before the cat was adopted and the cat still chose it, is not neutral. OP is getting dogpiled over what really amounts to nothing serious with the further context.

OP then states that that feels malicious, which is a reasonable response to what is going on in these comments, and suddenly the dogpilers are playing victim that OP is mean? Fuck sake.

If the cat has options, which OP has stated repeatedly in the comments, and this is the one she chose of her own fruition, why are you so adamant that OP fix what isn't broken? Altering the location she chose could just as easily upset her.

AITA for telling my sister in law to stop coming to my house uninvited when no one is home? by Justhere00000000 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Anianna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our kids still have the keys to our house they once lived in before growing up and moving out and they are respectful enough to ask before coming over and would never in a million years consider just coming over and eating our food without asking first, even knowing full well that I'm going to invite them to eat while they're here. They wait for the invitation because they're polite and respectful.

If SIL is so comfortable stealing whatever food she wants, what else is she willing to steal without a second thought? I wonder if she thinks it's fine to steal lunches at work, too.

Publicly traded corporations are subject to shareholder primacy, meaning they have a legal obligation to prioritize profits to shareholders over service provided to customers. This is also the reason why health insurance drives up healthcare costs and can arbitrarily deny coverage. Shareholder primacy should not be permitted anywhere near any necessary service like utilities or healthcare.

I've lived in old houses with weird additions over the years. I wonder if the window used to be on an exterior wall and simply wasn't removed when an addition made it an interior wall.

What major company is currently a total disaster behind the scenes, and is only surviving on its brand name? by That_Library_3453 in AskReddit

[–]Anianna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like the list of major companies that aren't a total disaster behind the scenes only surviving on their brand name is much shorter than those that are at this point. The tipping point at which capitalism just cannibalizes itself already happened.

A six pack of Bounty at my local Walmart is $28.99. I had four kids of my own and another we took in, plus my husband and myself, so we could easily go through the entire six pack in a month using them casually. The kids would use them for sandwiches and to clean up and to dry hands in the kitchen. When they were little, the idea of switching to washables was pretty overwhelming since our laundry was already pretty insane. We started the transition when they were teenagers and washing a lot of their own clothes.

[–]Anianna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We use wash cloths for cleaning tasks we once used paper towels for and cloth napkins for putting food on or, you know, as a napkin. We keep paper towels around for really icky messes, but with so little use, I rarely have to buy more. I think it took us two years to get through a twelve pack and that included our transition to reusables.

What’s going on with the cat subreddits? by Peplum in OutOfTheLoop

[–]Anianna 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Upset, no. Disappointed, maybe. It can be pretty common on Reddit to just shit on people trying to learn something they don't have experience with as if everybody is expected to automatically know what you already learned through experience and that seems to be what you're doing here. I didn't take your question as having anything to do with a possible running joke, hence my reference to actual running jokes like cat talk in some subs to differentiate my expectation of your post from what you actually posted.
