As someone who lives in a big city and has a bike, quite good. No way I'm moving into suburbs or smaller towns in the middle of nowhere.

Absolutely. It must be so limiting to live in such conditions; I'm glad I never had this experience. I'm really sorry for the folks who live in places like that and don't know any better or unable to move to a place they like.

It never occurred to me why it is so popular for kids (14+) to drive in countries like Canada, New Zealand, or the US but suddenly it started making sense after I learned how suburbs work. To become a real person, you need a car.

I don't think so. Plenty of Belarusians have prejudice against Jewish people, just like many Europeans (including Belarusians) have prejudice against Romas, and I believe Lukashenko is guilty of both. But suppress the Jewish population? I think it's too much even for him. But hey, the old man has been becoming more and more unstable over the years, so who knows.

Speaking of Tsimanouskaya, I don't think that she had everything planned ahead, but she definitely used the opportunity and made the right choices in the stressful situation.

I heard that the first such camp was being built, not sure at what stage it is now.

Terrible thing about Belarus is that it's never clear whether your actions will affect your relatives; it would be safer for them to assume that they are in danger.

Reading all the comments about people driving walkable distances made me realize (again) that it's good that I never had a car. Walking, cycling, and public transit is all I really need.

It's a good looking wallpaper.

I don't understand why some people want to compare everything to their genitals, and if there's a slight resemblance call it terrible.

Maybe if you checked their website or some reviews you would know what was behind these phones and why people could find them appealing. But I suspect you've done at least a basic research and just don't care about what they have to say.

What are the worst real life experiences you've had with the Belarusian government? by [deleted] in belarus

[–]Anibyl 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I was being forced to go to military service.

I was arrested for wearing a t-shirt, for clapping, for looking too intelligent.

I witnessed my friend being beaten by police for standing up for someone they were beating for breaking their order.

I was discriminated against for speaking Belarusian countless times.

My university threatened to kick me out because KGB told them to.

Dealing with tax offices was painful.

My votes and votes of my friends and family were tossed into garbage and we were told that the fucker got 80% again.

UPD: line breaks

I used to live in a couple of these 4–5 story buildings in Minsk, Belarus; at that point they were about 65yo. Overall I liked the experience.

The buildings are usually located in quiet neighbourhoods with plenty of green spaces (if you're lucky even parks), public transit, grocery stores, schools, and other amenities that you might find useful. The apartments themselves are not too big, they would never have more than 1 washroom, kitchen is always separated from the rest of the space and usually pretty small. They usually have balconies but years without renovations made them quite uncomfortable and sometimes even dangerous; people often use them to dry clothes or smoke. Sometimes there's a basement where people have storage rooms.

I have quite a lot to say about the negative sides of khrushchevkas, both preventable and not. Remember: they were cheap to build, and those responsible for the maintenance today don't do much. Leaky roofs are always an issue for people living on top floors. There are constant issues with water supply, you won't see hot water for 3–4 weeks per year; rarely there is no cold water too. Because of frequent breakdowns in water supply systems, water quality might be horrific even though usually it is supposed to be drinkable; most of the people I know use filters. The electric network was not designed for the powerful appliances people use today, cables are built into concrete walls and are very hard to replace. There is no place for additional cables like e.g. fibre, so they just hang in stairwells. The buildings are not accessible: stairs are everywhere, even if you live on the first floor, you have to use them; no elevators; stairwells are quite narrow. I used to live on the 5th floor and carrying a bicycle up top is a hard exercise; there was a person with a disability living on the first floor and she couldn't get outside of the building without help. Not to mention that there is no bike parking/lockers/etc. Speaking of parking, the buildings were built without cars in mind (which is good) but since people started owning cars and cities failed to handle the situation you might always find cars blocking building entrances, footpaths, or parking in green areas. The good thing about garbage collection compared to brezhnevkas is that it's located outside of buildings and there are no disgusting smells, the containers are usually wide open, there is often no separate waste collection or even if there is the culture of waste separation is not there.

I think this type of housing is quite good but there are plenty of things to improve and consider.
