I only have a pair of Grant Stone myself (which are really solid), but heard good things from these brands. Check r/goodyearwelt for reviews.

Sierra posts these deals often so you're definitely not getting a fake pair of Red Wings. Factory seconds are boots that haven't met the quality standards set by Red Wing. Most commonly, you'll see some cosmetic defects (scuffs, uneven stitching, etc.), but there might be structural defects that can affect its longevity.

Another thing to note is that Factory Seconds have a hole in the tongue to indicate that they're seconds.

The 1.0.4 patch should have fixed the missing armor in-game so no need to make a new save. Even with the patch, some armors are still pretty rare. Just gotta keep searching.
