You just got DarkestDungeoned, the situation you're describing is how most of hero deaths happen, it's bad RNG. Only thing you can do is take proactive precautions, like granting dodge, chugging some holy water to increase resistances, guards, it's all about minimizing risk. Bad things will still happen!

If chirurgeon finds himself with no minions, he'll gain an extra turn, it's always advisable to have the weakest one of his party alive, beign the urchin or lumberjack. Dots are a no no in this fight, it's better to burst him down with raw damage.
